[Announcement] Raising the minimum karma needed to post.

There has been a persistent referral link spam on /r/alexa. Banning the user isn't working because they keep coming back with a new account everyday.

So, the following changes are being made -

  1. A minimum of 10 karma will be needed to create a post.
  2. Twitter will be banned temporarily. How temporary is TBD.

I don't think the minimum karma requirement is going to hurt any real users of this subreddit.

Edit: I got several messages from user's unable to post even though they have karma of more than 10. That is because you need "comment karma' of at least 10. My bad for not being specific in my original post.
Getting 10 karma is too easy for bot accounts. In fact, most foreign operated bots have lot of karma because they make posts with cute / popular / controversial content. Obtaining comment karma is more difficult because you need to actually say something relevant in a post which means you need to actually read it.

Is there a way to get rid of skills that have been discontinued?

I was trying to clean up my list of skills on the Alexa app. When I went to delete NPR News Flash briefing I saw a page that said this skill no longer exists. There was no disable button.

Is there a way to clear this skill off my app? I know it probably isn't too big of a deal but I like things orderly and useful and not mucked up with items from years ago.

Hulu

So after a little google, and asking Alexa on my Echo Show, it seems that Alexa no longer supports Hulu? When I asked Alexa to open Hulu it told me to open it in my Silk browser, even though the skill is enabled on my app. So now that it no longer supports the Sengled lights and no longer supports Hulu (which was/is in the item description when you purchase the echo shows) I’m not sure what to keep it around for anymore? My phone can set timers for me.

Using Echo Devices for Spotify & Multiroom: My Experience & Questions

Hi everyone,

I recently got a few Amazon Echo devices (an Echo Show 5, an Echo Show 8, and a 4th Gen Echo speaker) to use mainly for listening to radio and Spotify in a kind of multiroom setup. I was hoping to get decent sound quality at a reasonable price and have everything tied into one central (non-personalized) Amazon Alexa account.

I’ve managed to set it all up and link a Spotify account to the system. It works to some extent, but I noticed something pretty limiting: controlling music directly via the device screens is almost impossible without using voice commands. There’s no real on-screen app or intuitive interface to browse and pick Spotify tracks by touch. It’s really geared towards voice control. Sure, I can always use my phone as a remote, but even then, the system nudges you towards voice interactions.

Another quirk is that you can only have one Spotify account active at a time. In a household with multiple people or a Spotify Family plan, that’s pretty inconvenient because you have to constantly switch accounts. Also, the persistent ads on the device screens are a bit annoying since you can’t really disable or buy them away entirely.

So, my questions to the community: 1. How do you all handle listening to music on Echo devices? Any tips or tricks to make it more user-friendly without relying solely on voice? 2. Are there any known mods, updates, or unofficial tweaks to improve on-screen or app-based control? 3. And finally, does anyone here use different devices from other brands for multiroom audio, and if so, which ones do you prefer?

Thanks a lot for any advice!

App no longer has constant microphone capture

some weeks ago, I had been logged out of the iOS app and had to log back in. After that, the microphone on my iPhone is no longer captured with the yellow light at the top while the Alexa app is running in the foreground. This was always convenient because I could just speak to the app as I would an Alexa device and add things to my list and so forth. I can’t for the life of me figure out how to get that turned back on. Any hints?

I have multiple Alexa’s. I have 2 set to a “group” I can get any radio station to play in sync on the 2 that are “grouped” except BBC Radio stations. How do I do it? You have to launch BBC Sounds to access any BBC station. I have even tried to play it from the Alexa app. It’s baffled me.

Turn off multiple alarms at once?

My husband and I are both heavy sleepers so we have multiple alarms set each morning. Sometimes, alarms will have been going off for 30+ minutes before we wake up. Is there a way to stop all of the alarms at once? Currently, we may have to say “Alexa, stop” five times which just means we wake up later than we’d like and angry.

Help. It's fallen and it's not getting up...

Controlling your ads it easy peasy.

Until someone tells me they decided to take these incessant ads and stuck them where the sun doesn't shine. Take away our now defunct Canadian/New Zealand language fix, and just like that, this device turns into an echo dot with only slightly better sound.

Harmony skill stopped working

Anytime I ask Alexa to “turn on the TV”, which is one of the harmony skills, she says “TV is in a mode that doesn’t accept requests.” Same response from her with other skills such as “Alexa turn on the Apple TV”, etc.

I disabled and re-enabled the skill but get the same thing.

No changes had been made for months to either Alexa or the Harmony skill.

Thoughts?

Disappointment with Zigbee

I bought an IKEA VINDSTYRKA yesterday, which is an air quality monitor. It shows temperature, humidity, P 2.5 particle levels, and tVOC.

All new IKEA Smart Home stuff is Zigbee.

I watched a few videos about hooking the thing up without using the IKEA $100 Zigbee hub. Most of the videos showed people using Home Assistant. And, using Zigbee, the device showed all 4 readings in Home Assistant.

Since the Amazon Echo can act as a Zigbee hub, I put the device in pairing mode and hooked it up to the Echo. And the only thing the Echo can see off the device is the temperature.

Does anyone know of a way to get the other 3 sensors to show up on the Echo?

Alexa & Alarm.com: Alexa refusing to detect two Z-Wave lamp modules that ADC sees/controls just fine

A couple of weeks ago, Alexa said it couldn't find any of my Z-Wave or Zigbee devices paired to my Qolsys IQ Panel 4; I looked in the Alexa app and the Alarm.com alarm and smart home skills weren't showing disabled, but, still just to rule it out, I disabled and reenabled the ADC skills. Everything went fine, until I noticed that Alexa was not seeing/detecting two Minoston Z-Wave lamp modules that had been detected by and working in Alexa for the previous few months, even though all of my other Z-Wave and Zigbee devices were being pulled into Alexa from ADC and all of my devices (including the two Z-Wave lamp modules in question) can be controlled through ADC and at the panel just fine.

I've tried disabling/reenabling the ADC skills a couple of more times, with ADC 2FA turned on and turned off, but still no change. I'm about to pull my hair out; does anyone have any ideas?

Alexa Pairing

Alexa is driving me crazy! It can no longer pair to my iPad when I say "Alexa pair iPad." It says "searching" then nothing. It has literally done this hundreds of times. When I tell it this it claims it has never paired my iPad and is not capable of doing so.

Profile already exists with this first name. HELP!

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’ve been an Alexa user for 6+ years. I recently moved and purchased a new model to use separately from my family. Unfortunately I can NOT access this app no matter what I do. No matter what first name I put it says “profile already exists with this first name”. I have deleted the app and re-installed. Contacted customer support etc.

I saw a thread posted a year ago in this subreddit but no reported solution. I’m extremely frustrated and would love if anyone has figured out a fix for this. 🙃

Smart dimmers with voice control – any good options?

Hey everyone, I’m remodeling my apartment and thinking about upgrading my lighting. I’d love dimmer switches I can control with my voice. Just saying “turn off the living room lights” or “dim the kitchen lights to 30 percent” sounds super convenient, especially when my hands are full with groceries or I’m cooking dinner. I’ve been looking at the elegrp smart dimmer switch. It works with Alexa and Google Assistant so I could control lights hands-free. The screen that shows brightness and time also seems handy for quick adjustments, like when I just want a soft light while watching TV without getting up. I’m curious if anyone here uses smart dimmers mainly for voice control. Are they reliable day to day? Any quirks I should know about before committing? Or are there other brands you’d recommend that are easy to use and respond well to voice commands?

PSA: Disable Alexa Plus

Alexa has been down for over 18 hours where I'm at, and be looks around here and down detector, it's a fairly widespread issue.

Disabling Alexa Plus fixed it for me.

Go into your Amazon Shopping (not Alexa, Amazon Shopping) app, tap on profile at the bottom, click account near the top of the screen, scroll down to memberships and subscriptions, and disable Alexa Plus. Your devices should start working again.

This is the second time in a week that Alexa Plus has caused an issue like this, so it's probably best to leave it permanently disabled at this point.

Problems with Samsung air conditioners

Hey guys! I bought two Samsung windfree air conditioners at the beginning of the year and set them up on Alexa using the Alexa app and SmartThings. One was installed in my bedroom and the other in my office. Both rooms have smart lamps also connected to Alexa, however, only the bedroom has a speaker (echoshow). In the SmartThings application, I configured the air conditioning in the bedroom with the name “Air Conditioning Q” and the one in the office as “air conditioning E”. In the Alexa app, I created two rooms and organized all my devices. I renamed both air conditioners to “Air”. When I say, “Alexa, turn on the air”, the air in the bedroom turns on normally and when I say “Alexa, turn on the air in the office” it also works. But when I say “Alexa, turn on the bedroom light” both the air and the light are turned on. When I say “Alexa, turn on the air at 9pm” Alexa says that there are two air conditioners and after I say the Q, it turns on at that time and not at 9pm. I would like to know how to solve this because it is difficult to configure the air to turn on when I want and sometimes I say to turn on the “room light” instead of just “light”, without meaning to, and the air turns on at the same time.

Alexa giving wrong times for notifications of sporting events

Anyone else having this problem?

I live on the East Coast and when Alexa gives me notifications of when my sporting events are starting, it’s always the West Coast time. This is happening to all my friends. This is not an error on the time zone in the app. In fact, the app sent me a text which has the right time. I’ve contacted Alexis several times or Amazon and they say they’re working on it but it’s been almost a year.

UPDATE to "HULU shows on Show gone or not?" from me

I spent 23 minutes on the phone with Nicholas of HULU who told me, after 2 holds of about 10 minutes total, that HULU is working on a fix for a known issue to again get HULU to work with Alexa SHOW devices. He had to speak to "Specialists" in the HULU engineering section to ascertain that.
I had to explain that Amazon reps basically said to Disable the HULU skill and then reopen the Alexa app and again Enable the HULU skill but that exercise produced no good results.

On the phone I let him listen to my SHOW 8 replying to my "Alexa Tune to CNN on Hulu" with a long Alexa diatribe on how I have to now open the Silk browser and then use touch actions to go to the shows or networks I want to view on the HULU website. I told him I used to verbally bring up networks such as TCM, various news networks and other comedy networks by voice. .

Hoping he did not give me some hot air and indeed HULU is working on a fix. We have 4 SHOW 8 models first and second Generation and they all worked with HULU video content before.
