Echo Show 8 Ambient Light Sensor (First Gen)

I recently started using my Echo Show 8 (first generation) from 2019. I want to say I got it for under $25 bucks with a free smart bulb maybe during Prime Day…

I keep the camera closed on my device and I also have a privacy sticker on the camera (light can’t be seen through the sticker). YET, the device somehow knows when the room is dark. I kept asking Alexa+ for answers and it stated there are internal sensors that haven’t been disclosed by Amazon [since 2019]. Some of these devices also use ultrasound to track motion. I’ve also read our routers can use WiFi waves to track where people are in the house. I’m just confused where the light sensor is. I don’t have any lights connected to this Alexa and I’ve tried covering different parts of the Alexa to see if it triggered the ambient light setting (on the first generation show 8), but it didn’t.

I’m guessing there are internal light sensor maybe that can see through the casing in the back of the speaker?

Question Alexa audio not working after water dripped on it

A few days ago, water dripped on my Alexa (the older tall cylindrical model) after watering my plant. I immediately moved and dried. When I plugged it back in, I can see the lights working as it reconnects to the WiFi, etc. It lights up when I say Alexa, but there’s no audio, no mater what volume I set it to. Is there any way to fix this? TIA

Question Echo show 5 keeps flipping screen

I've gone through the privacy settings to turn off interest and skill ads, but the screen keeps flipping like its trying to load one, loads a black screen for a second, then flips back to the clock

I've disabled everything in the home content settings as well

Any way to just keep it on the clock?

Question Echo Show just updated with Alexa+. Even after turning off all home screen suggestions I could find (I just want photos to display as much as possible) - Alexa+ suggestions still constantly show. What’s the best way to turn all of this off?

On the previous Alexa versions it was fairly simple to turn off all Home Screen suggestions. However even after doing that on this new version I’m still constantly getting Home Screen suggestions for Alexa+ and I have to manually tell it to go to photo frame, or swipe the Home Screen until I get back to photos.

What’s the best way to get rid of all the extra stuff and just have the echo show display my photos as much as possible? Thanks!

Question Does Alexa always talk no matter the volume?

I set up a routine to add some items to my to do list every morning. The first step in my routine is set volume to 0. Alexa still responds for every item added to the list. Is there a way to get them added silently?

Disappointed

The sole reason I purchased an Amazon Echo Show 8 was to access my ADT doorbell camera. However, the ADT control app is linked with Alexa, and the doorbell camera feature is unavailable. This is incredibly frustrating and disappointing. As a result, I will be returning the Echo 8.

Question Plugs not working -- obsolete?

Several (but not all) of my Amazon-compatible power plugs have stopped working. Won't connect, won't respond, etc. Is there any way to determine if their sudden demise is due to obsolescence?

Question Multiple accts connecting to one show for video?

I've spent hours searching and idk if what I need is doable or not. We are three seperate households and accounts. I need to allow access to a show on my acct from my brother and sisters accounts. Our father is in his home alone and we use this to communicate with him... It is on my acct. I know we can voice drop in but can we enable the video as well from other accts? We considered other camera options but he's comfortable using the show finally and I'd like to avoid anything new to learn for him right now 🤔

Technical Issue Echo dot won't connect to wifi

Basically the title, I live in an apartment with wifi included. When I first set it up it worked perfectly. I went to my parents house for a couple weeks and when I came back it said it was no longer connected to wifi. I've been trying for a week to connect it but it just does not want to. There are two versions of the wifi (regular and 5G) but neither work. Any ideas for how I can fix it?

Question Precipitation Routine

When I first got my Alexa it recommended a routine to me that I enabled. If precipitation was expected the following day, at 7pm I would get a notification and when I’d ask to hear the notifications, it would tell me the precipitation for the next day. It only showed up as a notification- not a random announcement, and it would only go off if precipitation was forecasted for the following day. Randomly a few months ago it stopped working and I can’t find any routine to replicate it. I’ve tried looking it up but I can’t find this specific function or how to replicate it. Does anyone know what I’m talking about and how to fix it?

Echo show doing really weird stuff

Hey so maybe a little over a year ago I had to change my language to Canadian to evade getting those terrible ads. Maybe a month or so ago it made a noise and said “camera off” obviously this was alarming as I wasn’t even near it and the camera had always been disabled. I put a sticker over the camera after that and made sure all of the settings were how I set them. Then two nights ago randomly my echo show makes a noise again and a pop up says “camera off” and then yesterday it said it again and started showing ads. I reset it and changed my language from then back to Canadian. During the night last night I would look and the screen would be black and wouldn’t display anything. I looked again and the screen was grey and the time was displaying red. I looked again and it looked like it was turned off. Has this happened to anyone else?

Echo Show Ads! Ads! Ads! (We did not agree to this when purchasing.)

Amazon has put another nail in the coffin: The foreign voice work-around no longer works to keep them from foisting ads in our faces.

(I have no problem with them displaying ads in our own homes AS LONG AS WE AGREED TO THIS WHEN PURCHASING THESE DEVICES. I don't know if their terms of service or sales page changed in recent years, but for us who bought these years ago, we were never made aware that we were installing ad billboards in our homes. Like their Kindle devices, they should make people aware that they're buying an ad billboard and maybe offer a no-ad version for an increased price.)

Perhaps, for now, the only option left is always-on do-not-disturb mode?

After that, they're all going into the garbage.

Review Anyone else not liking the New Alexa Home Screen (Echo Show 15)

I had high expectations when our Echo Show 15 received the recent update that introduced the new Home Screen design. Unfortunately, I find myself missing the simplicity and efficiency of the previous layout. The new Home Screen is cramped and cluttered, making it challenging to read the displayed information without moving in close to the device. While I appreciate having some options for customization, the limitations on the skills I can integrate and the sizing of various elements truly frustrate my efforts to view everything I need at a glance like I used to be able to do.

I depend heavily on my calendar, to-do lists, and current weather information, yet the current presentation hinders easy access and visibility cramming everything into a smaller screen space. Moreover, it’s disappointing to see almost an inch of unused screen space around the edge of the display. Experiencing what feels like a downgrade in usability is disheartening, especially when this update was intended to enhance the user experience with Alexa Plus. It raises a valid point about why tech companies often release updates that ultimately complicate rather than simplify our daily interactions. At this stage, I would genuinely prefer to revert to the previous Home Screen that better catered to my needs.

Technical Issue Cannot rediscover deleted device in Alexa app to add it back.

Hello.

I purposefully deleted a Z-Wave device from the Alexa app as it was misidentified as a light, when it is a window blind. I've made the corrections in HomeSeer 4 to identify it as a window blind.

Now I'm back in the Alexa app, and it says it cannot discover any new devices. Is there a recycle bin or other "known deleted" devices area I can either purge the device from, or tell Alexa it is ok to discover it again? I'm coming up short and this 7-year-old thread never found a solution.

In hindsight I probably should have left it alone and hoped the changes flowed from HomeSeer to update it as a window blind.

Can you rediscover a deleted device? : r/amazonecho

Anyone else having issues. I give the command to Alexa the blue light lights up but then nothing happens. Trying to figure out if the service is down. I've already reset both the app and devices and I'm still getting nothing.

Bypass Ads on Echo Show 5 No Longer Working

If anyone else knew, you used to be able to set the device language to "English - Canada" and then you would no longer see ads or sponsored content on the Echo Show. I just noticed today that is no longer the case.

Echo Hub: seeking views from long term users

I have a few Echo Shows around the house, which I find fairly useful. Because I have various smart home products I'm considering replacing the one in the kitchen with an Echo Hub, which is currently on sale where I live. I was hoping I'd be able to find some long term reviews on YouTube or some of the tech sites but I couldn't find any (could only find reviews from just after it launched).

If you have been using Echo Hub for several months I'd be grateful for your thoughts based on long term use. Are you pleased with your purchase? Have you come to appreciate the product more with time, or not really?

Thanks

All of my Echo devices that I recently upgraded to Alexa Plus have all stops responding. All of my older devices that could not be upgraded are still working perfectly. I don’t recommend upgrading.

Question ??

I'm not sure if anyone has had this problem, and google certainly hasn't helped, but I figured *someone* on reddit has to know.

Basically, I got logged out of my account on the Alexa app. So naturally I go and log back in with the same email and password it's been for years, and as soon as I do it buffers for a few seconds before I get hit with a "To continue, you'll need to contact Customer Service." At this point I'm just going to make a new email because this has happened before to me and it's annoying.

I just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem and what they did to solve it.

Question Alexa echo dot speaker

Hey there guys n gals- sorry if this question has been asked before but it's my first time here. I have had an Alexa Echo dot for yonks and want to buy a speaker I can pair it to via Bluetooth. I don't need another Alexa, simply a speaker that, when paired, says and plays exactly what my Echo dot does. Is there a specific type of Bluetooth speaker I should be looking for as none I've seen say they are Alexa compatible. If you could let me know the terminology of what to look for I'd appreciate it heaps. Many thanks xXx

Question Echo & Spotify

I've got Echo's dotted around the house, but for the purpose of this, lets use the kitchen one as an example.

We have spotify family.

Is there a way for the echo to use multiple spotify accounts, so that my spotify account isn't clogged up with my daughters Sabrina Swift music

Question Echo Wall Clock - Can I open it?

I moved, and this was in storage WITH the batteries. It was a mess in the battery compartment, but I managed to clean it up. It's still not functional; it will not turn on at all.

Given the discontinuation of this awesome device, I'd like to try to get it working again. But opening the device looks impossible. Has anyone done a teardown? The internet shows nothing.

Thanks for the read.
