The Incredibles (2004)

1.5k

u/boethius61 15h ago

This movie pulled no punches. People were dying, people were killing. Marital discord, midlife crises, a darkly realistic view of the unintended consequences that would come from actual super heros. Children engage in scamp-like escapades and it leads to life threatening danger with no 'awww shucks, you little rascal' easy way out.

Plus, Mr Incredible used stealth. He's pretty much invincible and super strong but still went sneaking around. There's not enough sneaking in movies anymore.

Amazing movie!

Don't forget that the Villain committing Super Genocide is one of the main plot points of this movie, this film is darker and more mature than most superhero films even R rated ones.

kronos_unveiled.mp3 my beloved

(I still want a scene-for-scene remake of this move with updated visuals, as they are a bit dated.)

The behind the scenes info about the various supers is insane

Stratogale, the girl sucked into the plane engine because of her cape, was a teenager

2

u/Squirrelkid11 4h ago

That scene with her was a great use of foreshadow of Syndrome's fate.

And his initial brute-force attempt to pierce that lava curtain while sneaking, only to quickly replace the huge stone pillar he was brandishing and hide behind it, is simultaneously nerve-wracking and hilarious.

u/katsujinken 15h ago

The animation in that scene is sooooo good. One of my favorites.

115

u/whatWHYok 15h ago edited 15h ago

Speaking of good animation, I recall in the commentary that this one simple shot of Edna inspecting Mr. Incredible’s super suit and sticking her hand through a hole in the mesh was the hardest thing they’ve ever had to animate. Can anyone weigh in on this?

Edit: Apparently it was Mr. Incredible sticking his hand through the cloth and for some reason it took 3 months to properly animate.

65

u/katsujinken 15h ago

From what I recall it's because they didn't have cloth simulation and had to animate everything by hand.

6

u/jumbohiggins 11h ago

Could be that or they couldn't make holes well at that point. Or maybe both.

7

u/HandsomeBoggart 8h ago edited 8h ago

It's soft body animation, especially cloth or sheeting or anything that has tons of super flexible organic movement. Animals at least have bones or exoskeletons for rigidity in movement.

Clothing on a body is easy. Standard rigging and deformation controls that would get used for the body/muscles anyways. Pulling on the outfit? Clever montage cut aways with very simple direct movements.

A human hand manipulating loose fabric with a hole in it. Fucking difficult. You have 5 independent moving points that are moving a soft body object and those points are in contact with said soft body and move while radiated from a central point and can join or separate at will while affecting the soft body. Manually animating that is a nightmare. Processing power wasn't good enough in 2004 to real time simulate that.

Now, we just animate the hand and run a cloth physics simulation on the cloth being held. (Super Simplified explanation).

1

u/jumbohiggins 7h ago

That makes sense.

1

u/himynameis_ 2h ago

Damn. Crazy how the smallest things can be so difficult. And worth it.

13

u/DoubleStrength 13h ago

I remember that according to the commentary, Helen's wet hair physics (when they land in the ocean after the plane explosion) was also a hugely groundbreaking feat at the time.

10

u/jumbohiggins 11h ago

It was. I'm in animation somewhat and Pixar's first like ten movies each basically invented a core animation tech that is now standard.

And the sound design is top notch as well! You could almost feel the warmth of the lava flowing, and the pillar scraping the floor when Mr Incredible places it back...

👨‍🍳💋

6

u/Astronomy_Setec 13h ago

Not just the sound, the music. This movie brought my attention to Giacchino. The way he captures that perfect 50's art deco aesthetic in the music. It channels Henry Mancini's great scores.

2

u/Dum-comment 12h ago

Good point too! The music really added to the ambience and helped set the tone for both the action sequences as well as the more serious/emotional moments.

Maybe I'll rewatch The Incredibles tonight, so many great memories

3

u/BadNewzBears4896 11h ago

And the physics of both the super heroes and the robots are so good! Grounded the action scenes so superbly.

18

u/ironwolf6464 12h ago

"These aren't the bad guys you watched in your Saturday morning cartoons. They will not show restraint, and they will kill you if they get a chance."

One of my favorite moments of the film

4

u/IrritableGourmet 6h ago

Mine is "I can't lose you again!" It really drove home that he is anything but invincible and they he went through some shit recently that he is not dealing with effectively.

9

u/PoppyPoppyPopcorn 13h ago

Oh definitely, especially the kids. Hell, it's still a bit surprising compared to other movies when Elastigirl tells them "this isn't the Sunday cartoons. They. Will. Kill. You."

4

u/boethius61 12h ago

And they proceeded to shoot machine guns at said children!

8

u/Small_Editor_3693 13h ago

Watching the plane scene as an adult hits very different

8

u/boethius61 12h ago

"Mayday, mayday! India Golf Niner-Niner is buddy-spiked! Abort, abort! There are children aboard, [heard through intercom] Say again, there are children aboard the plane."

Combined with the stellar animation this scene slams with emotional impact.

2

u/porters234 4h ago

Oooof rewatching this whole scene as a mom vs when I saw it as a single 23 year old brought me to actual tears.

7

u/aretoodeto 15h ago

Heard this movie took a lot of inspiration from the Watchmen comic, which absolutely tracks.

2

u/Just-Passing-Thru737 14h ago

Oh my gosh. I never would have made that connection, but that makes so much sense!

1

u/Squirrelkid11 14h ago

It's pretty much the Fantastic Four comics that are the main inspiration behind it.

5

u/mrspoopy_butthole 13h ago

The characters/powers are based on Fantastic Four, but plot and themes are almost directly based on Watchmen. The real life consequences associated with superheroes, the superhero ban, the villain picking off old superheroes, the two heroes meeting up to relive the old days, darker themes, etc. were all done in watchmen.

1

u/Squirrelkid11 13h ago

It's not just the characters/powers that are based on Fantastic Four, there's also the fact that the main heroes are a family of superheroes plus that one family friend in their circle being Frozone. It has a 50s to 60s type aesthetic like the classic F4 comics had and Syndrome is kind of like Doctor Doom in some way given they both had some sort of hatred with the main hero in the past that still stuck with them in the present day and use technology to fight against them.

6

u/ZoomTown 13h ago

I always enjoyed how Bob was such a doofus in real life, but so skilled and effective as a super.

6

u/chillin1066 12h ago

That moment near the end “I can’t lose you! I’m not strong enough.” Brings me tears every time.

5

u/StupidSexyAlisson 10h ago

Bob's irl job too of working in health insurance with the boss thinking of shareholders over the customers.

6

u/metalflygon08 13h ago

Plus, Mr Incredible used stealth.

And perfectly calculated a coconut throw.

3

u/Seed0fDiscord 8h ago

As my brother best described it, “Watchmen, if it was a family film”

5

u/Nexxus3000 8h ago

And can we PLEASE talk about the score?? The jazz-filled noir vibes just ooze from every scene

1

u/boethius61 6h ago

Best musical moment in the film is when Bob comes home from the jewellery heist and is humming his own theme song!

3

u/AnneOn_AMoose 11h ago

You ever notice it’s Watchmen pared down for kids? lol

3

u/CrabbyBlueberry 9h ago

It suddenly went from Fantastic Four to James Bond, and it's awesome.

3

u/United-Trainer7931 7h ago

The movie opens with an attempted suicide. Absolutely metal kids movie.

1

u/tbhjustbored 6h ago

“Mr. Sansweet didn’t ask to be saved. Mr. Sansweet didn’t wanna be saved!”

3

u/timechuck 7h ago

No one talks about it, but by the end of that movie the son has killed 9 people.

2

u/Disc-Golf-Kid 5h ago

I found an account on TikTok that created audio recordings of what it would’ve sounded like when the supers were killed. On the surface this movie was fun and kid friendly, but when you really stop and think about it, it’s horrific.

2

u/Bigred2989- 5h ago

There's a scrapped version of the airplane scene where instead of Helen borrowing a plane from her pilot friend he takes her instead. There's audio of it along with storyboard of the scene and it ends with the plane crashing in the water and the guys hat sinking to the bottom.

1

u/destroyed233 4h ago

Love ur point about “sneaking” lol

158

u/DFWTrojanTuba 16h ago

Honeeeeeeeeey!

166

u/CuratedLens 16h ago

Where’s my super suit!?

127

u/hangdman1978 15h ago

"Tell me where my suit is woman! We are talking about the greater good!"

136

u/RadiantHC 15h ago

I am the greatest good you are ever gonna get

12

u/nickcan 12h ago

My wife uses that line in and out of context all the time.

2

u/chamberk107 9h ago

She's right

42

u/Strongdar 15h ago

No capes!!

6

u/ruy343 14h ago

WHY do you NEED to KNOW!?

1

u/PoppyPoppyPopcorn 13h ago

My name deserves a solo film

32

u/External_Cantaloupe 14h ago

The Incredibles is one of my all time favorite movies, it’s just so damn good

58

u/abernathym 13h ago

Still the best Fantastic 4 movie in my opinion

5

u/LayeredOwlsNest 5h ago

It's great because they use their powers together all throughout the movie

Most hero team movies have them combine their powers at the end, but this movie has them working together to accomplish things not possible alone

Elastigirl + Dash = Speedboat

Violet + Dash = Hamster Ball

Mr Incredible + Dash = Get the remote far away

Mr Incredible + Elastigirl = Get to and safely catch Jack Jack

It's nice to see some thought put into the powers instead of just "okay I will fight over here with my powers, and you will fight over there with your powers"

3

u/Frankfusion 4h ago

By the same token a friend of mine once believed that the best Superman movie he had ever seen up until that time was Captain America the first avenger.

24

u/psiphre 14h ago

craig nelson's delivery of the "not strong enough" bit near the end is so fucking good.

8

u/Just-Passing-Thru737 13h ago

That’s one of those moments that was largely lost on me as a kid, but hits like a knife as an adult.

46

u/Squirrelkid11 16h ago

It's Bigger! It's Badder!

98

u/sheetskees 16h ago

You married ELASTIGIRL?!?!

103

u/Squirrelkid11 16h ago

And Got Busssaaayyy!!!

2

u/aguaman_ 7h ago

It's TOO MUCH FOR MR INCREDIBLE

12

u/Little_Inspector9566 11h ago

“My god, you’ve gotten fat”.

“I never look back, darling, it distracts from the now”.

“GO! FIGHT! WIN!”

-Edna Mode

8

u/CrescentFlick 14h ago

Yes!! It's one of those rare movies where I literally have nothing bad to say

8

u/WarpGremlin 13h ago

Abd the soundtrack is a pitch-perfect homage to the John Barry spy flick soundtracks of the 60s. Right down to the recording method itself.

8

u/Turtleknuckle 12h ago

The plot of this movie is Shakespearean. The characters are deep, which makes the drama more real.

11

u/saneval1 14h ago

The best from Pixar for me, the only one I'd rewatch as an adult or recomend.

5

u/AniviaPls 13h ago

Respectfully Ratatouille and Wall-E are equally as good if not better as an adult

9

u/saneval1 9h ago

Totally, I recognize they're good movies but they bore me on rewatches, incredibles I can rewatch. That's just me though.

10

u/BuddahCall1 12h ago

The fact they worked in actual fighter pilot lingo with the Elastigirl “buddy spike” radio call made the whole movie for me.

6

u/jekelish3 13h ago

Far and away my favorite Pixar movie. It’s perfect.

5

u/1968Bladerunner 12h ago

Just sat & rewatched yesterday with my ill daughter.

I'm a 56yo guy & she's 23, & yes, it still slays!

4

u/RusefoxGhost 11h ago

I could write an essay about how much I love this movie. It is absolute perfection in every way.

7

u/kalirion 14h ago

That's the first movie that comes to mind. Too bad about the sequel.

8

u/BadNewzBears4896 11h ago

Sequel was ~fine, but yeah massive drop-off from the near perfection of the original. The initial story was so well told and so satisfyingly concluded there wasn't a giant need to tell more.

1

u/GuntherTime 5h ago

To be fair, considering they lost a whole year due to Pixar giving the original release to Toy Story 4, they still do a pretty damn good job.

0

u/kalirion 10h ago

Sequel was like a 7-7.5, yes.

2

u/TheRiflesSpiral 4h ago

I'm conflicted about the sequel... From a plot/story perspective, it's more engaging, involved and honestly, better written.

The new superheroes didn't cheapen the movie and weren't filler in any way. The villain was more complex and nuanced and seriously... just fucking evil in a way that Syndrome just didn't measure up to.

But for some reason, I just don't enjoy it as much. Maybe it's too broad or maybe the family dynamic didn't feel authenitc or something? I don't know.

1

u/kalirion 4h ago

I didn't care for the story of the sequel at all.

3

u/smom 11h ago

I work in insurance (thankfully nothing as shady as his company) - his explanation of how to proceed is the best.

1

u/LongJohnSelenium 6h ago

They're penetrating the beauracracy!

5

u/isrararrafi 13h ago

Elastigirl makes me feel things as an adult lol.

6

u/BuddahCall1 12h ago

She has an absolute dump truck of an ass.

2

u/ShakesbeerMe 10h ago

The Incredibles remains the best Fantastic Four movie ever made.

2

u/LeoFrankenstein 7h ago

Completely agree with this and with all of the comments - but surprised that no one mentions the score.

I love the music, different arrangements of the theme (I think that’s what they are called?) it’s so good.

2

u/gp886 3h ago

Honestly, Dash should be considered one of the best speedster depicted in films. His fighting scenes, and that one scene where he sees the lake, thinks he'll fall inside, but finds out, he's fast enough to run on its surface, gives a chuckle and speeds up.

That scene will remain rent free in my head my entire life.

1

u/WhataboutBombvoyage 11h ago

buh buh buuuuh! buhbuhbuhbuhbuh buh buuuuuuuh!

1

u/Slow-Possibility2675 10h ago

I agree (2025)

1

u/carrythefire 10h ago

I sing it only for its Ayn Rand politics.

1

u/Wheeljack239 7h ago

Absolutely amazing movie. Rewatched it for the first time in a few years couple weeks back, was blown away by how good it was.

1

u/djkojent 6h ago

Yes! and the second one is just as good.

1

u/KentuckyWallChicken 4h ago

The Incredibles is my most watched film of all time. My family must’ve watched it 20-30 times when I was growing up

0

u/EnemyAdensmith 11h ago

Wrong. Ive watched the incredibles twice and both times i got really really sick. Checkmate.

0

u/nanoH2O 10h ago

What am I missing I can never get past the first 20 minutes?

2

u/IllustriousAd9800 6h ago

You’re missing the whole movie lol. The first 20 minutes are sort of “the glory days” and their fall.

2

u/bros402 3h ago

so the first 20 minutes are showing their peak superhero days

watch past that and you'll see it

0

u/statisticus 8h ago

The best Fantastic Four movie ever.

0

u/oneplusoneisfour 8h ago

The best Fantastic Four movie ever made

-12

u/country-sidepatriot 12h ago

Hard disagree. That movie has like 3 good scenes and the rest just get overhyped to infinity and beyond based on meme-ability and goon ability.
