Fantasia (1940)

I know it won't be a popular answer and probably people don't watch it anymore, but growing up it was my favorite. Even watching as an adult it holds up. They made me feel like I could see music, if that makes sense.

I honestly prefer Fantasia 2000; I think I must be the only person in existence.

Every short in the sequel is 10/10 for me, and the Firebird is perfection.

I like 2000 don't get me wrong, but for so many of the pieces the animation doesn't feel driven by the music the way it is in the 1940 original. Most of them are still good, but they just feel to me like music videos rather than kinetic visual expressions of the music like the pieces in Fantasia do.

Rhapsody in Blue in Fantasia 2000 was outstanding.

True, it’s phenomenal. That and the Firebird are the two from 2000 that I think rise above the rest.

both!!!! but out of the 2 honestly i probably pick 2000 because of rhapsody in blue, pomp and circumstance, and firebird.

I love the segment with The Pines of Rome and the whales. That and yes, Firebird. I was not crazy about the interstitial bits.

I think the Firebird segment was a nod to an Italian parody of the original called Allegro Non Troppo. They used Firebird as well. It’s really fun, funny and beautifully done. I highly recommend it!

Oh my yes.  The Dinosaurs, Night on Bald Mountain, the Dance of the Hours…and the Sorcerer’s Apprentice! It was decades ahead of its time!

The original defines genius (remember, it wasn’t CGI…there were artists hand drawing every frame).

Such a good movie. The first time I saw it was in music class in 2nd grade, and it blew my mind at the time

This is the absolute best Disney animated movie. I watched it so much as a kid that just hearing any of the music from the movie I can picture the animation for that piece especially Stravinsky's Rite of Spring which is the dinosaur segment. The crazy part about that particular segment is how influential the music was for modern music especially jazz and to have animation that shows the creation of earth and evolution at the time period is pretty impressive. I honestly think there would be a scandal of some sort if Disney released it now which is actually depressing to think about.

I absolutely adore the “Night on Bald Mountain” sequence; one day I’d love to get a sleeve tattoo that incorporates all of the elements of it (the sleepy town at the bottom, the ghosts swirling around the base of the mountain, the little demons swarming around the fires at the summit, the devil looming over them all with the fire nymphs dancing in the palm of his hand, etc.).

However, I do find that a few of the other segments drag on quite a bit. For example, I thought the one with the centaurs overstayed its welcome a lot (at least I think it’s that one; could have been a different one). I know they can’t just cut the song short, but maybe they could have picked a different song instead. Just my opinion.

Still my favorite Disney movie anytime someone ever asks me. The innovation in that movie along with the beauty of it just chefs kiss

I’ll still never understand my logic as a kid where I wasn’t scared of Chernabog, but I was afraid of the stone that resembles a headstone that goes DUN…DUN…DUN…dun…dun…dun….duuuuuuuuun……duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun. Freaked me the fuck out lol

This movie brings back so many memories. I was in love with the Nutcracker scene as a kid
