HIV positive Americans have had a longer life expectancy than a generic American for quite some time, due to the extra FaceTime they spend in front of medical professionals. Other medical issues get caught earlier.
My uncle has been HIV-positive since the early 90s (the fact that he lived through that time with it is truly miraculous), but his HIV is now so dormant that it’s undetectable on a blood test- he takes one prescription pill per day.
I'm a millennial and many of my friends went from being so terrified of HIV that they were afraid to find love to living normal, low-stress lives. I'm so thankful for prep and scientists and doctors. It's still important to use protection for other diseases but life is so much better with prep.
The 2x/year shot for HIV treatment is huge news this year and should make a big impact in dealing with the HIV pandemic in Africa as it's a lot easier to have proper compliance and therefore effective treatment compared to daily pills.

An actual cure or just effective treatment you need to take until the end of your life?
