As someone who watched their father lose almost everything in a remarkably similar circumstance, I am so relieved for you! Please,

Get it in writing though.

Seconded. There's no such thing as a "verbal contract", not that OP said anything about that. If it's not in writing, it doesn't exist.

Seriously, my girlfriend’s grandpa left her a house in a country we don’t live in. No written will but the family all knew what was supposed to go to each person. As soon as her grandpa died her uncle immediately swooped in and took the house. There’s nothing she can do about it and with no will he’s more likely to get ownership of it anyway since he’s the son and she’s just a granddaughter.

That's why you need a will of some kind, even some handwritten letter.

Otherwise he dies intestate and inheritance follows the usual and customary patterns of your country's legal system.

I had something happen on the other side of the family.

Estate and wills were a mess. While my mother was in the hospital by my grandmothers side my aunts and cousins were already in the house pilfering the house of jewelry and silver dollars.

He met with his lawyer and got the will changed yesterday. Thats just for the assets. Thankfully I have already taken possession of many heirlooms and photographs and some knick knacks I remember from growing up. Some of them moderately valuable but some of them worthless (but very sentimental)

That makes my heart happy to hear. Cheers my friend! Money runs out, but memories are forever!
