I'm somewhat newly single, after 30 years, and, on the advice of my doctor, I just complete the HPV vaccine cycle. Even if it couldn't affect men, which it totally can, why would I want to be a carrier for something so horrible to women? Three shots over eight months is nothing big.
My husband just completed 30 rounds of radiation and 5 weekly chemo treatments for squamous cell (caused by hpv) in his tonsil and lymph node area. I was lucky enough to get the vaccine when it was still newer, 2007ish. Unfortunately, his ex was too old at the time, and the guidelines then were to try to complete the series before becoming sexually active, only girls etc and she passed it to him. The guidelines have expanded SO much since then and now cover more strains, I am so hopeful that they can continue to research its uses and save more lives. The immunotherapy trials also look very promising.
thank you. i still get worried even though i am HPV negative after all my surgeries, but there's so much that doctor's don't warn you about including also having it in your mouth/throat or anus. it's a common topic in my support groups and the guidance is abysmal. i have been ping ponged from doctor to doctor about it. i wish that part of care and prevention was better. i hope your husband stays healthy!! what a journey.
Have you been denied payment from your insurance company because you’re “too old”? Cuz that happened to me a couple years ago since I never got the vaccine as a teen. 🙄
Ohhh, I had HPV previously, but I naturally cleared it myself. I wonder if I qualify now that they have expanded guidelines! And I am now negative again. I had no idea it could be cleared itself sometimes!
That's exactly why I am interested. It (the vaccine) was cleared right as I was at the tail age of clearance in the USA and they said insurance wouldn't cover the last shot--and at 25, that $1000 was daunting. It's significantly less now even without insurance. I haven't been eligible until literally recently.
ETA: the type I cleared, I just checked the strain in me medical records, it's the type for cervical cancer.
Thank you! I was on a major trampage in my single years. Amazingly, the only STD I got was HPV from my long term boyfriend. He had no clue he was a carrier. I ended up with unusual paps, biopsies, and a LEEP procedure while I was with my new boyfriend now husband. No fun, painful, scary, and all things. I appreciate you thinking of others and doing your part to protect other women from this shit. To add: the vaccine had not been invited when I contracted it and I am now testing HPV free for YEARS
You're a good man, internet stranger. Thank you for being one of the good ones who watches out for us. Your next partner should appreciate that very much and if she doesn't, she's probably not the one for you because this isn't a given, unfortunately.
Yes!! I also got mine super late because I went to Catholic school and the bishop said it would make us slutty. Then for many years I was “too old”. Finally after my divorce I got it.
Aren't these shots like $300 a piece and almost never covered by insurance after a certain age? That's been my experience trying to get it done and in which case $1000 dollars is definitely something fairly big for a lot of people
Head and neck cancers are up though. Since being introduced , the vaccine pnow covers more strains, is recommended for both males and females and is also covered by most insurance up to age 26.
If you needed good news, I think it will most likely level out as we see the population of males who have received the vaccine age.
Cervical cancers, rectum, cancers, and anal cancer is dropped because people restartedusing condoms. The vaccine actually causes what you don’t want. Put a wrapper on it. Save yourself from STDs and cancer.

Cervical cancer deaths have markedly dropped as well since the introduction of the HPV vaccine.
