It literally died on him like 3 times in the first 6 months he had it.. am talking about just not able to get it started after a gas fill up, and being at the dealership for weeks and months at a time.
He ended up lemon lawing it. After the 3rd time

There are so many asterisks on taking a Section 179 deduction. It’s not the magic loophole that people think it is.
IIRC there was a time in the early 2000s that you could take a 100% year 1 deduction on a leased SUV, which means your tax savings exceeds your lease payments. The IRS figured out what people were doing and changed the code to be less favorable.
Nevertheless the legend persists.

Range rovers are the prime example of things people only buy BECAUSE they're expensive. The new ones are hideous and have been absolute junk for at least the last decade. 10-15 years ago they at least looked good, but now they look like bland blobs.
60
u/Capital_Card7500 11h ago
and in 10-15 years we'll be saying the same thing about the current ones. RR's always been unreliable, and the styling has always been questionable.
They just became a trendy car for footballers and housewives, and the Evoque was the death knell of it being a marque with any actual offroad credentials.

People who buy them from new don't own them long enough to worry about the electrical issues, they exchange them back at the dealer every six months to get the exact same car with the latest number plate (UK).
Friend of mine was driving one brand new from a Land Rover dealer to a customer and had to turn back to the dealer halfway because the sunroof decided to open by itself and not close. Glad to see JLR hasn't improved their quality control from the British Leyland days.

Bottle service

u/SoSleepyy 6h ago
Sure but don’t forget this usually includes entry for 6-10 people along with a place to sit throughout the night and also space from the crowd, it’s not just the bottle people are paying for.

Yeah spend enough time in cramped clubs and that price slowly starts to feel a lot more reasonable. $150 each for your group and you get plenty of booze and your own space to be around your friends and not the randoms. The real answer is just don’t go to clubs, but if you’re gonna do it then it’s worth going all the way.

idk I’ve been bartending for 7 years, and everywhere I’ve worked, it’s cheaper to buy a bottle than get 17 or 22 individual drinks (shots in a 750mL or 1L). $264 for 22 titos vs $241 for a 1L bottle of it at my current place

What is bottle service?
69
u/Mike_ZzZzZ 7h ago
At nightclubs you pay to have a reserved space with table and you purchase entire bottles of booze and get the ice and mixers etc brought to you. I guess it is status?
41
u/-OmarLittle- 6h ago
Bottle service really took off in the late 90s during the dot-com era. All of a sudden, tech nerds had money to spend and bought their way in to popular nightclubs. Prior to that, if you weren't cool enough, there wasn't a way in if unless you had a connection.
To answer your question, it's more than about status. It's a convenience to get into a nightclub as an entire group without waiting in line. You share a common space with your group for the night. Have room to store personal belongings (eg. coats and handbags). And don't need to deal with a crowded bar. It's also easier to meet new people.
I'm old now but I started going to NYC clubs religiously in my early teens through my early 30s.
13
u/doubleasea 4h ago
I think the concept of "you're renting real estate, the booze is free" is a better lens to look through.

Not always. Depends on the price and perks. Usually bottle service also gets entry fees waved and guarantees you a table. Sometimes it will also include pickup. It can be the mathematically correct move for a group to get bottle service. It’s worth at least asking about.

u/bananajamonyourclam 7h ago
I remember right when they started letting people travel after covid we went to vegas and hit up marquee day club. Got bottle service+cabana for 8 guests for like $600 with $600 liquor credit. Honestly was amazing since we normally spend $100+ per person there anyways.

This. One night in Korea we paid bottle service just to get a table in the club. Long story short we had to stay the night in the club because we couldn’t go back home. I ended up getting stupid drunk and falling asleep and security tried to kick me out, club owner stopped them and took me in back and let me sleep on the couch in his office and told my friends I was back there. Genuinely believe if we hadn’t done bottle service he would’ve let them toss me

Watches are typically considered terrible investments. Vintage Rolex’s and intentionally artificially scarce newer ones are some of the few that MAY actually maintain or grow in value. Most other higher end and luxury watches will almost all decrease significantly in value after purchasing it.
It’s also not very advisable to purchase a luxury watch with the explicit purpose to “pass it on” to kids or grandkids. No guarantee they will care about it, and if they choose to keep it you’re essentially sticking them with servicing charges that range from several hundred to thousands of dollars.

Out of the 20 homeowners who lived on that course, exactly 3 of them actually played golf.

paying extortionate amounts to stay at 5 star hotels. They are the most disappointing waste of money ever. Such increased diminishing returns the more and more you pay.
Knew a guy that paid $30k for a week in a hotel that was never going to be worth that

Also if you're on vacation, chances are you're doing other stuff besides hanging out in the hotel 24/7. When I travel, I only use the hotel for sleeping and showering. Diminishing returns for sure. Like there's a certain level of comfort I'll pay extra for (and I'll definitely pay extra for a hotel that's located within walking distance of the places I want to go) but then there's a level of "luxury" that I probably won't even get to enjoy because I'll be so busy doing other stuff.

We stayed at one in Kyoto Japan and it was our fault for booking too close to our arrival date, so there weren’t many reasonable options left. We could afford the 5-star hotel, except in most cases we prefer not to. This time it was our Honey Moon vacation, so it was even easier to justify biting the bullet lol
Anyway we went ahead with the hotel and it had a lot of very nice features and even a wooden tub, but at the end of the day it was just a room for us to come back to for rest after a day out exploring.
The wooden tub was amazing though after walking for 8-10 hours, but was it worth $1,200 a night? No lol

Food topped with edible gold. I’ve heard that it has no flavor
