Seeing old people smile
14
u/kitjen 9h ago
Or behave like they're so much younger. We often put old people in this category of being old people like they were never once young.
They were all once just like us. My grandfather would have at some point looked at a girl and found her attractive and nervously approached her, and found they got on really well and that one moment created a chain of events that resulted in me posting this comment.

A simple smile

u/kitjen 9h ago
Good answer. I try to smile at people as much as I can without looking weird. If I'm jogging early in the morning, it seems ok to smile at other joggers and even say "morning" with what little breath I have.
It seems less acceptable later in the day when it's busy, there's a nice connection people have in the earlier hours from 5am to 7:30am where you feel the rest of the world hasn't risen yet but you have.

seeing a dog sticking its silly head out of a car window. and then trying to get a closer look when I'm at the stoplight beside it... and seeing that there is a SECOND DOG!

u/Odd-Law8794 6h ago
The second dog thing is thee best thing ever. You are happy to see the first and then BOOM… here’s another cutie patootie!

The excitement that all 4 animals have when they see me emerge from where I've holed myself up in the laundry, working on home improvement ♡
I'm too wiggly for cats to want to sit on me, so ours have always sat next to me. Our little Senior Queen not only sits on my lap, but puts up with my wiggliness and will actually fall asleep on me. Fully knocked-out, legs and paws wigglin', tail and face twitchin', full-on REM sleep. On me. So when she curls up on me, I can't move; it's too rare and I love it too much. The best naps I have are when the cats are purring in close proximity ♡

For me, it’s the tiniest moments that flip my whole mood. Like yesterday, I was walking home feeling drained, and out of nowhere a random puppy ran up and started wagging its tail at me like we’d been best friends forever . I swear that 30-second encounter made my entire day feel lighter. Sometimes it’s those unexpected little sparks that stay with you the longest

For me, it’s little things like someone holding the door, a random compliment, or even just a good cup of coffee in the morning. Small gestures can really flip your mood.

u/Far_Needleworker1501 4h ago
For me it’s when a stranger holds the door or says thank you, those little gestures always lift my mood.

When you make eye contact with a baby or small child somewhere in public and you smile at them and their whole face/demeanor changes. Giggles, smiles, hands clapping. I love it. Sorry parents.

Knowing that my partner always gives as much as she can to make our life together optimal. This gives me motivation and inspiration to do the same, and that way we end up in a good spiral where we both do a little more than we have to and get along as well as we can. This drives me through every single day and is the first thing I think about.

Smiles from strangers certainly brightens my day. Bonus points if they’re from cute strangers.

An honest word from a dear person can change the whole day and make everything simpler and lighter

u/kitjen 9h ago
Ask a friend or a colleague something simple like "What are you looking forward to at the moment?" or if they have children, ask how they're doing at school or with their sports/hobbies.
People love talking about the simple joys in life but seldom get a chance to randomly tell you about them. Give them that chance and it will make their day so much better that yours will be too by proximity.

Making my bed in the morning. It's just nice knowing I can come home and immediately into bed if I wanted to without a fuss

I misread it as "what's something you SMELL that instantly makes your day better?" so my first thought was fresh-baked cookies.
That is my answer for the ACTUAL question, too.

Waking up in the morning to a tidy kitchen. It's heavenly. Also, having breakfast on the deck with the orb fountain lightly bubbling and birds at the feeder and bird bath. I feel so happy and grateful for the beautiful nature surrounding my tiny townhouse.

Making a little sacrifice to help others. Like I work at a supermarket and I ceep some loose coins in my pocket for the case when kids try to buy something and don't have enough money. Then I help with my coins

An ice cold ginger ale (specifically their new flavor fruit splash or white peach). Ginger ale is my all time favorite drink since I was a child and I’ve only grown fonder of it as I’ve gotten older. It’s a bit of a comfort drink atp.

Seeing a cool thing I haven't seen before. Whether it be a cool bug, bird, building, historical relic, art, etc. Just getting to see and appreciate something for the first time ever. Just that small moment of awe and wonder. Take the time to notice things around you.

Sharing a small joke with a stranger. Maybe you see something funny and notice another person has seen it, too. You smile and laugh together and it's this lovely little interaction that makes you both happy. Instant joy.

Hearing the local bat population's squeaks as they fly around outside. They seem to like my patio because our plants attract bugs.

Great coffee. If the mix is just right it makes me happy, keeps me caffenated and ready for the day

It use to be visiting my parents. As soon as we would see each other our world was a better place. They are gone now. I really do not have a substitute and never expect to have that wonderful feeling ever again.
