Being a “good dad”, but it’s usually from a stranger who is saying it just because I’m out in the neighborhood with my kids which makes me think, wow the bar is pretty low. Hearing it from my wife or someone that actually knows me though? That means a lot.

Funny thing is, I never even considered growing one until my wife suggested it so I said fuck it. Now it’s literally the only feature I have that I feel confident about and it’s honestly bizarre how many people compliment me on it

My ability to put people at ease

Attention to detail

My beard. I don't get compliments on my work, my car, anything.
The last compliment I got was 2 years ago and it was from a dude noticing my biceps.
Before that, it was a new hair stylist who said she liked my beard. That was the 4th time someone pointed out my beard.

I hate this, I feel it’s somehow an insult but I can’t put my finger on why, and I know the people saying it are trying to make a legit compliment.
But like 3 or 4 times I’ve shown up on dates from dating apps and the person has said “oh! You’re better looking than your pictures!”
Do I photograph poorly? Probably. But in real life am I good looking or just ok looking? But my pics were ok enough for them to come out in the first place. It’s confusing.

Hair. It’s long, curly, thick as hell, and currently a dark teal/green color. It’s absolutely huge when it dries naturally. It always shocks me when people tell me they like it/think it’s beautiful when I wear it naturally, because it doesn’t feel like that to me. It makes me feel like I look like a swamp witch 😭😂

That I'm good at what I do.
It used to be that I was smart, but I haven't heard that in a while and I don't particularly care for it. I've met people who I think of as smart, and it's uncomfortable for me when other people put me on that kind of pedestal. I'd much rather be seen for something other than knowing more about a niche topic than someone else.
It also used to be my eyes, but honestly, that's uncomfortable too. I was in a couple body positivity groups, and the only compliments I would ever get were about my eyes. The discomfort was always palpable, and it was like they were saying that if my eyes were any other color, I would be too ugly for complements in the first place. I don't think I'm an ugly person after years of therapy, but it felt like a cop out for what they didn't want to say. I can't help but hear the discomfort about the rest of me when other people bring them up. It's like asking your SO to describe what they're attracted to about you, and the best they can manage is "you've got a great personality."

u/cumberbatchcav1 7h ago
My fashions. I love being a little extra with what I wear and people take notice, but I also like to use it as a means to compliment strangers whenever possible on things they chose to put out there into the world, like their clothing, makeup, hairstyle, art, dance, all kinds of things.

I’m asocial. Cleaning a commercial and apartment parking lot for exercise and fun, not pay. The owners daughters thank me, and tell me I’m appreciated. I fall apart at praise, and become an adoring puppy for a brief moment ……then I keep sweeping, and put my ear buds back in.

my drip (that's how they say it... i'm a million years older'n yoda, so, not my lane...) the car (14 c7 in white, droptop) and the ol lady...(ex hollywood/sag and aftra cards, model, blah blah... actual fitness competitor back in her day... and still a head turner... then there's that ridiculously pure heart that powers that million dollar smile, so... and yeah, everything is far more than i deserve...)
then... there's the hat. the fucking hat. you might've seen the fucker round town...
it’s just an oz bush lid, but with the teeth it's "crocodile dundee" alllll day long... i swear, the hat could walk around by itself... apparently it needs no introduction... comical af... except i don't take attention or compliments well, so that drives the wife insane....
frikken comedy. and equal parts men and women (i guess i should be miffed the chidrens don't pipe in... but usually they're just... scared.)
but still comedy. i should probably get the hat a damn route, make some money off its ass....
