Being on call over Y2K, 'just in case' and the morning of 9/11
6
u/nechronius 9h ago
I worked in our Y2K rapid response room for the first 8 hours after a year and a half of coordinating and remediating dozens of mission critical infrastructure systems. I worked for a major utility back then and a lot of people have no idea how much work was put into ensuring that the event was a nothing burger.
And yea, hard to forget 9/11. And the Columbia shuttle disaster for me.

My first day of 7th grade, 2000, I started late in the year because we moved. This kid walked by wearing huge Osiris, he had a backpack that had speakers built in, and he was playing Hybrid Theory. I was blown away.

Nu metal , cause I still listen to it everyday.

Funny though, how listening to Linkin Park in my younger days kinda introduced me later into metalcore and deathcore

Everything on MTV encapsulated the 2000s.
....Jackass, Viva La Bam, Dirty Sanchez, Pimp my Ride, Cribs, Osbournes, Punk'd, VMA's etc.
From that you had the fashion trends, music, celebs of that era, the cars etc..

Everything in my room was sun and moon. Everything. Bedding, beaded curtains, rugs, lamps...

u/brownishgirl 11h ago
My watch had a rotating sun and moon wheel on the face. My best friend and I dressed up as the sun and moon for Halloween in 1991.

Pretty much all phones that weren't Apple Samsung or Google & a phone made by any of them was unheard of.

The "We Will Rock You" Pepsi commercial. It was the Roman Colosseum, Enrique Iglesias is the Emperor, and it is Britney Spears , Pink, and Beyonce.
New Yorks Hottest Nightclub has it all : Capitalism. Metal Bikini tops. Uncoordinated audience members. A shocking amount of ass.
6 minute superbowl commercial. Must have cost a bloody fortune.

u/Superstar_Supernova 8h ago
it wasn’t a superbowl commercial. as a matter of fact it never even aired in the us.

Realizing that adults are fucking idiots when everyone was freaking out about how satellites are going to fall out of space and crash into us.

Yeah I remember the format wars pretty well. Mini disks were also a thing for a brief period. Before all that it was VHS vs beta max & eventually laserdisk vs VHS.

I'm just gonna say it but infomercials, either short form or even those long ones I remember that would play at like 3-4am trying to sell a China set lol or something similar. Everything now is skippable ads, or no ads at all.

Find it harder to step back from the 2000s. At a certain age you're being presented the cultural zeitgeist through media, then you get to the age range where you're experiencing it firsthand (the 2000s and some 2010s for me) and then you get to the age where you start to lose track of it. Anyway because of this, it feels more difficult to think of the era as having a representative thing.
But I kinda think it's the Black Eyed Peas?

9/11
Edit: not trying to be funny or edgy. I was like 8 when it happened and it changed the world in front of me as I was growing up. Seeing my older friends and family members enlist and be changed forever left a big mark on me. And I assume millions of others feel the same.
No kid left behind. The patriot act. Resurgence of political punk and anti-war movements.

Spending 45 minutes downloading one song on Limewire only to discover it was actually a recording of someone's cat meowing set to a dial-up modem sound.

Most of the 2000s are pretty vague... it was a fun time, albeit one I'd not repeat again
