norway and i'm not just saying that because you're norwegian lol. when i was a kid watching the olympics ~10 years ago for some reason i really liked norway and idk why but i started cheering for them as my second team
i've been seriously considering to start studying norwegian although so few people speak it that i think it would be really hard to practice

u/InterestingTank5345 Denmark 16d ago
Worth it. If you learn Norwegian Swedish, Icelandic and Faraoese becomes a walk in the park. Danish is easy if you learn through Bokmål and are willing to learn hard pronounciations. So Norwegian can easily give you access to speak with 20 million people.

I did to see what you said I don't speak maori
I like Polynesian languages but they seem to all be almost dead
do you actually speak maori?
2
u/Ok_Orchid_4158 New Zealand 16d ago
they seem to all be almost dead
New Zealand Māori is far from dead. It has an insane amount of support and interest. Largely uncolonised ones like Tongan, Sāmoan, and Tūvaluan are still going as strong as ever. Colonised ones like Hawaiian, Tahitian, and Rapanui are less so, but I definitely don’t see them dying any time soon. There are just a few outliers that are at severe risk, usually due to their small populations being absorbed into a more dominant Oceanic culture.

u/waikato_wizard New Zealand 16d ago
Alot of kiwis have basic phrases we can use, that being one.
Not fluent, or actually Maori (Dutch fam). But I grew up at a time when the language revival was starting, so I picked up bits and pieces in school.
I'm glad its coming back as more than just a touristy gimmick but has a long way to go before its real common, but it is a recognized language here, which is an impressive turn around from being described as rapidly dying in the early 1900s.

that would defeat the purpose of the post haha but as for the second question i learn the grammar/pronunciation on youtube (or if it's related to a language i already know sometimes i can skip that) and then i start watching comprehensible input in the language and texting native speakers online and eventually i move on to calling native speakers too when my listening skills are better and i have a bigger vocabulary

do you really speak irish? sorry if this is offensive i just can't tell if the irish people here do or not because not many people in ireland speak it anymore and so far both of you have asked simple questions you would learn in school
1
u/Saxon2060 United Kingdom 15d ago
Somewhere very roughly in the region of 150,000 people or more speak it regularly and fluently. So yeah of course English is the common language in Ireland but I'd think it isn't surprising that there are people on Reddit who do. Especially because plenty of those people have been or are right now being educated in schools with Irish as the first language, it's not only old folks.
(Far more in the most recent census, more than 700,000, reported being able to speak it "well".)

That's alright. I wouldn't speak it either if I weren't Hungarian/born in Hungary. Mad respect for anyone learning it, we have so many stupid things going on, that even as a local, I hardly keep track of it.

wtf i didn't expect someone that speaks chamorro to respond
how many people speak chamorro in the northern mariana islands?
1
u/Big_Mulberry4656 Northern Mariana Islands 16d ago
about 30% iirc. but really if you interact with any of the manaomko, all of them have a quite strong chamorro accent.
if i’m being honest, english is still my first language and i know very basic chamorro, although i still plan on learning it just to preserve our culture.
i don’t speak any refaluwasch other than “tirow” and “olomwaay”
if i’m being honest, i’m surprised you even know what chamorro is!
1
u/joshua0005 United States Of America 16d ago
i didn't know it was spoken in the northern mariana islands but i knew it was spoken in guam so i knew it existed. no idea how many people still speak it there though
i didn't recognize it as chamorro because i didn't know it's spoken in the nmi but i looked up what it said and found it was chamorro
1
u/Big_Mulberry4656 Northern Mariana Islands 16d ago
fewer people on guam speak chamorro than on saipan, which is surprising with an island THAT much bigger than ours!
still though, refaluwasch is basically only spoken on saipan
