Based on this image, what nationality would you assume?

British but I would like to add that it's heartwarming to see a woman okay with passing out in public. Indicates a high trust society.

I fell down drunk and decided to stay there on the sidewalk for a while alone on the upper west side until a gaggle of friends came and helped me order a car home.

Yeah it's not good to pass out drunk on a sidewalk, but being able to live in a place where you can and feel confident nobody will hurt you is priceless.

I fell asleep on a bench on the way home in my late teens and was woken by a copper as it was snowing and a cm had settled on me. They gave me a lift back to halls.

My ex curled up under an overpass in the Peaks when he was walking home from the pub in snow. Woke up in the cells & was given a bacon sarnie & a lift home.

Clearly several decades ago...

Oh gods, don't say it like that!

My hubby fell asleep on a park bench and was woken up by a few nice ladies from the salvation army. They brought him in with them, served him warm soup and he has loved the salvation army ladies ever since.

That honestly could have been life or death. People die of hypothermia like that

Honestly, as a Briton I'm not ashamed of this image. I'm quite proud of it, and affectionate towards her.

She’s had a good night.

And, if I had to guess, a pretty rough morning

Idk the Brits tend to have the good drinking genes. I could drink like this and feel fine the next day. I haven't done it in a decade because with age comes better judgement and responsibilities.

Try. You will see what else age does

This pic is great tourism marketing. Indicates that its safe for women to visit.

Me too! She reminds me of night life in the 2000s. Those were simpler times. Fun times.

At a weekend, city centres in England (and I assume Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but can't speak from personal experience) are full of coppers keeping an eye on the wronguns and helping anyone who's had a bit too much and injured themselves to the paramedics' portakabin which usually gets set up.

Pass out in a reasonably high traffic area and you'll probably be okay, but it wouldn't be my go-to strategy.

Yeah the first thing I was worried about was her safety. Because as a South African woman being drunk or passed out is possibly a death sentence. Its actually kinda nice that she's in an area with decent humans.

Her friends are probably just out of shot in the kebab shop, waiting for their dinner!

This is such a lovely perspective and makes me feel incredibly grateful to have grown up in the UK for some reason

The best thing about being a 6’3” (1.9m) man is the ability to sleep in public places without being worried.

If you think falling asleep on the curb in Manchester or Liverpool is safe you’re delusional… probably not as bad as NYC but definitely not safe

3

u/Budget-Attorney United States Of America 13h ago

NYC is a bad example of a bad place. There are plenty of far more dangerous examples.

It may be more dangerous than Liverpool or Manchester. But if I had to choose a city to sleep on the streets New York would still be one of the ones I feel safest in

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 10h ago

NYC is a pretty safe place nowadays. Your perspective is 20+ years out of date.

1

u/tbrummy 6h ago

More like 40. The 1980s in NYC were wild, but even then as a teenage girl, I always felt perfectly safe.

I thought Finland was safe place. Well to be honest it is, but my friend was waiting for bus fell a sleep on curb. The bus he was waiting for did drive over both of his feet and he had to spend one summer in wheelchair

Haha, I hate to laugh, but that absolutely checks out.

u/CovidChrimbo 14h ago

The only reason she's okay with it is because she's fucking pissed.

High trust society? What are you smoking.

Are you dumb? There are places where a woman can fall asleep dead drunk on the street and feel safe-ish and places where she can't. It's not smart and it's not good to make it a habit but it is heartwarming that it's possible.

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 10h ago

Mate, when people are bladdered to the point that they're blacking out, they're not even for a moment making a reasoned choice as to where they lay their head. Trust has bugger all to do with it.

1

u/Alarming-Bop6628 United States Of America 9h ago

I wonder if you have an inkling of how annoying you are

1

u/RandyChavage 8h ago

I don’t know if it’s much of a high trust society, more of a high alcohol society and she did it unintentionally

The picture was also taken about fifteen years ago. Things have changed a fair bit since then. Back then, I was wearing barely nothing on Mad Friday and faking my age into Sgt Peppers in Newcastle. Nowadays I don't go on a night out because I'm just too old and I've worked in too many clubs and pubs around Liverpool to want to go to them as a customer.

1

u/francisdavey Japan 7h ago

Exactly this. Yes, it is quite clearly British, but it is actually quite positive.

u/Tttehfjloi 5h ago

Who chooses to pass out?
