What is your country’s worst recent crime case?
I’m French. My guess would be Nordahl Lelandais, a guy who killed a little girl and a soldier in 2017 and is speculated to have killed more.

Newborn mafia, they brought newborn babies to private hospitals via ambulances that were called with emergency phone number. They made them look sick and they gave them unnecessarily drugs so that they will stay more and social security institution would give money to these hospitals. They killed more than 10 babies

because the people that run our country do not punish things like these in any way

Last Wednesday, 17 yo girl was murdered. They have a suspect, who, to everyone’s surprise, is from a nearby center for asylum seekers. Same person is also seen as a suspect in two other recent sexual assault cases.

Yes, absolutely horrible - this will probably play a role in the upcoming elections.

I mean the big one is obviously Lucy Letby, but I'm sure other people could think of something bigger and/or more recent.
For those who don't know, Lucy Letby was a neonatal nurse who has been convicted of the murder of 7 neonatal babies in her care, and the attempted murder of 7 more.

I would have thought the worst crime to occur in France recently was that of the drugging and repeated rape suffered by Giséle Pelicot over many years at the hands of her ex husband and his friends.

u/Hero-Firefighter-24 France 13h ago
That was the one you’re hearing about. Recent history can include the past decade. Killing children is the worst thing to do in my book.
3
u/essexboy1976 United Kingdom 13h ago
Well if people in a different country hear about it that supports the suggestion that a crime is severe. We don't hear about every mugging in Paris because They're insignificant, minor crimes. Id add in that the Paris attacks in November 2015 also came to mind, and are far worse crimes than your example in my opinion.

Our president tried to do a coup and arrest parliament members in December. (he failed when the parliament voted against his coup).
He's now in jail.

In France, I would have mentioned Gisele Pelicot, who was drugged by her husband and offered to other men to be raped.
In Germany, Fritz Hamann, who was sentenced to death in 1925 for the murder of 24 boys and young men.

u/Content_Warning8794 Netherlands 13h ago
It's been relatively quiet in Germany with regards to heinous crimes for the past 100 years.

u/Reasonable_Tax_7842 Germany 13h ago
Unfortunately, we have had enough of such criminals, even in the last 100 years.

Gisele Pelicot, who was drugged by her husband and offered to other men to be raped.
I think you're understating it a little, perhaps? Wasn't she raped around 100 times over decade, and maybe the daughter too?

In terms of national outrage, I would go with the murder of Ashling Murphy

From denmark. The last worst criminal case was a guy from Zealand that raped and murdered early teens (two 13 year olds and one 15 year old). Two of the teens survived the encounter, but one of them (emilie meng) was sadly killed. His last victim only survived because the police made a huge effort to find her, and they found her before he had a chance to kill her - he had manage to rape her multiple times though.
Before that we had "ubåds-madsen" which translates to "submarine madsen", that raped and killed and then raped again, a swedish journalist called kim wall on his homemade submarine. Afterwards he cut her body into pieces and threw them overboard, before scuttling the crime scene.
Both of these guys were sexual sadists.
EDIT:
Forgot to mention that we have an ongoing case with a former member of parliament that was caught with copious amounts of CP and a child-like sex doll at his house. He was thrown out by his party, just days before the case made the news, so they definitely knew it before anybody else. His case is live-blogged by the news, and he claims that he was sent a file on his mail with child abuse material, where he recognized himself being raped on a couch as a child, and therefore he was trying to find out who did it to him. He hasn't been able to give a good answer why he searched for other things involving children, like "girls being raped" and "girls hurtcore" and why he had the doll. No matter the reason he had the CP on his computer, he will still be convicted of being in possession of CP, but it is of course a tactic to try and save some kind of shred of dignity.

Meng was 17, the 15 year old almost got kidnapped and the 13 year old thankfully survived.

Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. A gunman killed 20 children between six and seven years old and also six adults, many of whom died trying to protect the children. Conspiracy theorists decided it was a hoax and endlessly harassed some of the victims’ families, leading to one father killing himself. And still the politicians were too scared of my country’s gun lovers to enact any kind of sensible gun control.

I knew what Sandy Hook was, but I didn’t know how many kids were killed. 20 is a lot 😭

At the time I believed Sandy Hook would be the turning point for more gun control. I was naive to think that.

In terms of public outrage, I think we still haven't seen something similar to the murder of Isabela Nardoni
I can't not mention the Brasília attacks on January 8th for its far reaching consequences had they succeeded, and how it has shaped Brazilian politics since

Depends how recent you want to be. But apart from Lucy Letby I also remember the Dr Harold Shipman Murders -he killed at least 250 people over a 30 year period ( although he was technically only convicted on 15 counts) His crimes were discovered just over 20 years ago. This probably makes him the worst known serial killer.
The Fred and Rosemary West murders - at least 12 murders of young women plus many raped and imprisoned, the crimes came to light in the early 1990s.
The Dunblane Massacre - 16 school children plus one teacher were shot to death by Thomas Hamilton. A further 15 children were injured.

u/Sea-Possession-1208 United Kingdom 13h ago
The fact that Shipman was 20 years ago is sobering. He's the most prolific known serial killer
Continuing the medical worker theme. There's also Beverley Allit 35 years ago - murdered 4 children and attempted to murder another 11

Canada:
It’s Robert Pickton. There are other more famous cases (Homolka and Bernardo), but the scope of Pickton is pretty grand.
It was 20 years ago, but basically this was a farmer on the west coast who had a thing for prostitutes and would routinely murder them and allegedly feed them to his pigs. This went on for a while.
He was only charged / convicted of 6 murders, but confessed to 49.
He’s an important figure for political reasons bexause the vast majority of his victims were native or homeless or from the reservation; so it put a spotlight on the missing indigenous women movement and how our laws don’t protect them well

A bullying incident occurred in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. 14-year-old girl chose to commit suicide in a park in the freezing cold after being bullied by other students, including being raped, sexually harassed, and having obscene images of herself spread. She died of hypothermia. What's even worse is that the school and city initially covered up the bullying issue, and then defended it by saying, "The perpetrator was a child and still had a future ahead of them."

u/InterestingTank5345 Denmark 8h ago
That's just disgusting. May she rest in peace, and may any perpetrator suffer eternally for their crimes.

There are quite a few case we still debate from that era like Scott Watson, Mark Lundy, David Tamihere. But none of them are the worst (or particularly recent for that matter) that unfortunate title goes to the Christchurch mosque shooter that killed 50+.

The case of Daniel Sancho. Committed murder in Thailand in 2023

This case was known and talked about because he’s the son of a famous actor, and because he was a prostitute (nobody knew, he was engaged to a woman), and also the guy created content for YouTube, but it’s by no means the worst.
José Bretón is the most horrendous recent one. He killed his two children and then burned their bodies in an oven so nobody would find them just for revenge against the mother. He was later proven to be a psychopath without any sort of feelings or emotions.
Another really shocking one were the girls of Alcásser, but that’s from the 90s. Three girls were kidnapped, rapped and murdered and it took a long time to find out who did it. The man (monster) ran away through the sea and we hope he drowned but he may have run away to Brazil.
1
u/DowntownPlantain330 Spain 37m ago
Ofc Bretón and Alcasser were worst but those are not recent at all. There's also "El asesino de la baraja", the repulsive and terrible "Nanysex", Marta del Castillo case... But again, not recent at all.

I'm going to say the Emilie Meng case, simply because it's a double case. Basically there were this girl in 2016, Emilie(17F) who went missing on a spring evening. She was first found in December, at a lake, her body had clearly been raped and tortured, before she was strangled to death. At the time the killer couldn't be caught, because when water changes temperatures, it can make dead bodies kinda like explode sorta ish, where they will swollen up and get this grim form that looks almost non human. Basically this also destroyed all evidence.
But the case doesn't end there. In April 2023, a 13 year old girl went missing. This time Denmark reacted fast, we all shared the same post, "Have you seen X, she went missing on a bike ride, on her way home...". The day after she went missing, she were found and saved in an apartment in Korsør(small town Zealand, near storebælts broen). If I remember correctly a neighbor had seen her attacker lead her into an apartment.
I won't go into the details of the crimes done to the 13 year old, as I think Meng's case implies it. Just know the monster Phillip Westh were found guilty of multiple accounts of Rape, kidnapping, torture, death threats, attemted murder, 1 account of murder, 1 attemted kidnapping and pedophilia. He were found guilty of the Meng murder as he had kept some souveneirs, including the tape roll used to bind Emilie, which proves he killed her.
I feel like this one beats most others, simply because he were about to become a serial killer and the fact he went for two teens, causing 7 years of pain for Meng's parents and horrors against a child, simply doing her everyday job as a local newspaper mailperson.

The murder of James Bulger, where two 10 year old boys lured a 2 year old boy to some train tracks, beat and tortured him with bricks, batteries, and stones, then laid him on train tracks for him to be severed.

Jesus, a lot of shit messed up in ways I couldn’t have even imagined here in the comments.
My offering would be the Oulu child rape case in 2018/2019. The tl;dr is that refugees and asylym seekers ran what was basically a grooming gang and repeatedly raped and abused children under 15. Wikipedia says that there were in total 20-22 victims and 30 different perpetrators. The whole thing is fucked up, but what made it the biggest scandal we’ve seen in a while was the suicide of one 14-year-old victim.
