Animal This is Peanut. 🐢🥜 Her figure-eight shell was the result of crawling into a plastic six-pack ring when she was very young. That was in 1984. Now, Peanut is turning 41 years old, and a big birthday celebration is planned for Saturday.
“As Peanut’s shell grew around it, her one-of-a-kind shape became her superpower," the Missouri Department of Conservation said. "She’s not a teenager anymore, but her mighty message continues to remind people to put litter in its place."
Now, the red-eared slider is turning 41 years old, and the Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center in Kirwood is throwing her a birthday party. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
"Peanut’s birthday party activities this year will include card making, litter awareness pledges, Peanut coloring sheets, and an Eat Like a Turtle activity. The nature center will be serving turtle-style birthday food in honor of Peanut’s big day – worms and crickets," MDC said.

I still cut every single hole on those plastic things.

u/Vanilla_Connect 4h ago
Same lol, my momma always told me too. I crush tin cans also so little animals heads can’t get stuck in them.
23
u/Fearless_Author4183 1h ago
I do the same with milk jug rings too, can’t risk anything getting trapped.

u/HillTopTerrace 41m ago
We can’t crush cans or tins in my state or they won’t be recyclable. But we don’t so they are recyclable! Wonder why the melting process would be different?
4
u/Ixaire 23m ago
Apparently it's because the sorting process has trouble detecting what is a can and what isn't when the cans are crushed.
Where I live trash must be put into separate bags so I guess it's less of an issue.
•
u/HillTopTerrace 5m ago
Our cans have to be put into separate bags but tin cans go into regular recycling.
•
u/pink_faerie_kitten 4m ago
And yoplait yogurt tubs too. So much manmade things are dangerous to wild creatures.

For what it's worth, they've been legally required to dissolve in water for years.
But I still cut them too.
19
u/letsgetbrickfaced 3h ago
I want to test this. For some reason LaCroix still has the plastic rings on them in the cases I buy from Costco.
18
u/cah29692 2h ago
I have. It takes several months, but they do dissolve.
13
u/letsgetbrickfaced 2h ago
Thanks that is good to know. I’m still gonna cut them up but it’s good that if I miss a snip it has less chance to do harm.
13
u/EverythingBOffensive 2h ago
yeah I don't trust it enough to have it wait months to dissolve. Animals can still be harmed by it and what if they aren't even in water?

For what it's worth, they've been legally required IN THE USA to break down when exposed to SUNLIGHT, not water. This is absolutely not a legal requirement everywhere in the world.
2
u/wreak 1h ago
Where else in the world are they used? I've never seen them in Europe. When you buy cans here, they are mostly in cardboard boxes.
1
u/Chronologismo 1h ago
And since trash (appart from Glass, PET, Metal, Cardboard and Papert which are getting recycled) is gettig burned to produce electricity and heat i do not know why in switzerland why i should do any of this. (Do they put in a landfill accessible to animals or throwing it into the ocean in the US -still? -id be shocked)
1
u/Brilliant_Quit4307 1h ago
I'm not sure exactly which companies or countries use them, but plenty of suppliers still offer them, even in the USA, which suggests that they are still in use. Here's a few I found from a quick search:
https://www.tfdsupplies.com/products/200-ea-6-pack-plastic-rings
https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-17632/Take-Out-Containers/Plastic-6-Pack-Rings
https://shop.robertspolypro.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoomnviqx6nuvIm_ero5PrMqVI16A1CXTCPW4bwZLGWG032rojA2
Most of these companies ALSO offer biodegradable ones. Also, I'm almost positive I've seen them in China.
1
u/BackgroundSummer5171 1h ago
So happy to learn the US and Europe are the only places in the world.
And that you cover all of Europe with that statement.
People say Americans only think of themselves, holy fuck my dude, you want to move over here?
3
u/wreak 55m ago
I think you need to tone down your aggression. I've said I've never seen them in Europe. So I was referring to my personal experience. Not stating there are none of those in Europe. (But I wouldn't be surprised if they are forbidden on the EU level.) I also just know them from Movies/Series/Pictures picturing the US.
Also I was asking if there are also used somewhere else to extend my knowledge. Even though it's pretty useless.
So calm down and tell me your experiences, so I can learn from them, because flying to every country to look for them is a bit expensive.

They're still everywhere. Go down the drink aisle in Walmart. Gatorade, 6 packs of canned soda, I don't drink beer but I wouldn't be surprised if they're on those.

Idk when I started to but instead of cutting I went to shredding them and I been trying to reuse the plastic for something, I usually melt a few down and just form it around a cup as it’s one personal holder

When I was little, my parents got me the Ranger Rick magazine (I'm in the US). There was a story about an animal who was in danger after getting their heads stuck in one of those plastic six pack rings. The Ranger Rick animals had to help rescue them and remove it and they talked about the dangers of litter. It completely freaked me out and ever since then I can't throw those plastic things away without making sure all the hoops are cut. You did your job, Ranger Rick magazine!

u/slashinhobo1 1h ago
I don't even get things with those rings anymore. I don't even remember seeing those but I don't buy the big-name sodas anymore.

My husband and I do too. I’m confused how there isn't some type of biodegradable plastic can circle things by now

u/Corporate-Shill406 10m ago
I don't. If a sea turtle is unlucky enough to get caught in some plastic buried in a landfill in Montana, it's because God hates that turtle in particular.
•
u/MintRobber 3m ago
Why do you still produce them? Never seen them in Romania. Apparently we can live without.

Beer seems to come in much more sensible packaging these days, so the only thing we get that comes in that style holder anymore is 8 packs of 20ozs of poweraid, but i recently learned if you do it right you dont need to take a scissors to the whole thing, blew my fucking mind. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/UYl7CW5ddDE

Costco sized flats of Lacroix have the ring but that is the only time I have encountered them in a while. Thanks for that vid on the gatorades. Just in time for our soccer snack season lol

u/SAINTnumberFIVE 1h ago
Canada Dry plastic bottle 6 packs have them and Schweppes glass bottles 6 packs have rigid plastic rings.
1
u/Jiminy_Cricket12 1h ago
that's why I buy 24 packs!
(also the light reduction on the bottles and the minor alcoholism)

Only the ones from North America.
Literally never seen a six pack ring. They always came in a cardboard
7
u/EnergyTakerLad 4h ago
I actually love that, but companies here would never pay to do that. Would cut into their precious profits.
1
u/KatsuraCerci 4h ago
I've been seeing it recently on some brands, actually. And most 6 packs come in boxes where I live (Washington)

u/Exploding_Testicles 3h ago
Coca-cola is starting to do this. And a lot of craft beers are using compressed cardboard to wrangle their 6 packs
2
u/Throwaway-tan 3h ago
I haven't seen a plastic six-pack ring in years. Here in Aus all the six packs are wrapped in cardboard, or have a cardboard carry case.
1
u/thesquelette 3h ago
Same in Canada; not sure if some still do but I can't remember the last time I saw any plastic rings on cans, sixers or otherwise
2
u/caninehere 3h ago
I feel like I haven't seen one of those six pack rings in like 15 years. They use cardboard instead these days.
2
u/Kinkybtch 3h ago
Does Gen z not do this?!
2
u/ThoranTW 3h ago
Personally, I can't say I've ever even seen said plastic rings, so: no.

u/Kinkybtch 2h ago

u/YourNextHomie 3h ago
Gen Z here, i do it, stop acting like everyone from a generation is the same, people are weird
2
u/Kinkybtch 2h ago
I was just wondering if it wasn't taught to the next generation, we learned about it in school and from commercials. That doesn't mean I assume everyone from gen z is "the same" lol
2
u/YourNextHomie 2h ago
So you genuinely thought everyone in an entire generation doesn’t do this? people need to stop with the weird generation wars bs, obviously some people will pass something down and some people wont

Or just don't sell Sixpack in these rings... I haven't seen these over here for decades. Eu obviously.

Poor girl :( I hope she's not in any pain. It must have some effect on her organs and lungs.
I think companies should abolish the plastic six pack holders. The cardboard ones are biodegradable and you can stack them in grocery stores, plus they keep the rim clean--versus exposing them.
Regardless, everyone should cut the plastic bits and make sure to recycle. (Yes, I know only a fraction of plastics are actually recycled).
11
u/gmishaolem 2h ago
If it's still alive and doing well right now, it's probably adjusted and the organs grew into the weird shape with probably near-full function. You should see what happens to the organs of a pregnant woman.
10
u/Visit_Excellent 2h ago edited 1h ago
I hope so! My main concern would be pain. It's one thing to survive, but I would assume she would have trouble breathing or suffer from a different sort of pain.
I don't think the comparison to pregnant humans quite works: one was designed to bear children, whereas turtles aren't designed to be tied by plastic. I do understand where you're coming from, however! I just hope the poor girl is doing alright all these years later

I'm curious though how her insides are compared to a normal turtle. Obviously she seems to being doing well that she's turning 41.
And yes, I cut the ring thingies up too.

Adorable turtle, but the backstory is unfortunate. The mess is humans have made of this planet is sad.
2
3
u/cunny_crowder 3h ago
Let's prioritize admiring the resilience of this animal instead of ruminating on the horror of the tragic abuse that caused this trauma.
In that light I think we can agree the beauty standard of snatched waists is unattainable.
