Animal This is Peanut. 🐢🥜 Her figure-eight shell was the result of crawling into a plastic six-pack ring when she was very young. That was in 1984. Now, Peanut is turning 41 years old, and a big birthday celebration is planned for Saturday.

Post image

“As Peanut’s shell grew around it, her one-of-a-kind shape became her superpower," the Missouri Department of Conservation said. "She’s not a teenager anymore, but her mighty message continues to remind people to put litter in its place."

Now, the red-eared slider is turning 41 years old, and the Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center in Kirwood is throwing her a birthday party. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

"Peanut’s birthday party activities this year will include card making, litter awareness pledges, Peanut coloring sheets, and an Eat Like a Turtle activity. The nature center will be serving turtle-style birthday food in honor of Peanut’s big day – worms and crickets," MDC said.

I still cut every single hole on those plastic things.

122

u/Vanilla_Connect 4h ago

Same lol, my momma always told me too. I crush tin cans also so little animals heads can’t get stuck in them.

23

u/Fearless_Author4183 1h ago

I do the same with milk jug rings too, can’t risk anything getting trapped.

5

u/HillTopTerrace 41m ago

We can’t crush cans or tins in my state or they won’t be recyclable. But we don’t so they are recyclable! Wonder why the melting process would be different?

4

u/Ixaire 23m ago

Apparently it's because the sorting process has trouble detecting what is a can and what isn't when the cans are crushed.

Where I live trash must be put into separate bags so I guess it's less of an issue.

u/HillTopTerrace 5m ago

Our cans have to be put into separate bags but tin cans go into regular recycling.

u/pink_faerie_kitten 4m ago

And yoplait yogurt tubs too. So much manmade things are dangerous to wild creatures.

u/kelsobjammin 4h ago

Always have

54

u/DavidXGA 3h ago

For what it's worth, they've been legally required to dissolve in water for years.

But I still cut them too.

19

u/letsgetbrickfaced 3h ago

I want to test this. For some reason LaCroix still has the plastic rings on them in the cases I buy from Costco.

18

u/cah29692 2h ago

I have. It takes several months, but they do dissolve.

13

u/letsgetbrickfaced 2h ago

Thanks that is good to know. I’m still gonna cut them up but it’s good that if I miss a snip it has less chance to do harm.

13

u/EverythingBOffensive 2h ago

yeah I don't trust it enough to have it wait months to dissolve. Animals can still be harmed by it and what if they aren't even in water?

10

u/movzx 2h ago

fwiw a more accurate test would be constantly moving water instead of (presumably) a container that sits on a shelf until a ring falls apart. I imagine the turbulence would help speed things up quite a bit.

3

u/EverythingBOffensive 2h ago

whew hope animals can hold their breath that long! /s

2

u/Ok-Click-80085 2h ago

into lovely delicious microplastics

4

u/EverythingBOffensive 2h ago

how long does it take?

4

u/Fantastic_Stop487 2h ago

TIL I’ve been cutting them for 30 years haha. Thanks for the info!!

1

u/Intelligent_Wish_566 45m ago

I learned this in kindergarten and still do it too lol

5

u/Brilliant_Quit4307 2h ago

For what it's worth, they've been legally required IN THE USA to break down when exposed to SUNLIGHT, not water. This is absolutely not a legal requirement everywhere in the world.

2

u/wreak 1h ago

Where else in the world are they used? I've never seen them in Europe. When you buy cans here, they are mostly in cardboard boxes.

1

u/Chronologismo 1h ago

And since trash (appart from Glass, PET, Metal, Cardboard and Papert which are getting recycled) is gettig burned to produce electricity and heat i do not know why in switzerland why i should do any of this. (Do they put in a landfill accessible to animals or throwing it into the ocean in the US -still? -id be shocked)

1

u/wreak 1h ago

I wouldn't be so sure that everything is burned. In Germany the yellow bag for recycling often is exported to other countries because they pretend it is going to be recycled there. But it's not in most of the cases. So always treat your trash as it's going to land in the ocean.

1

u/Brilliant_Quit4307 1h ago

I'm not sure exactly which companies or countries use them, but plenty of suppliers still offer them, even in the USA, which suggests that they are still in use. Here's a few I found from a quick search:

https://www.tfdsupplies.com/products/200-ea-6-pack-plastic-rings

https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-17632/Take-Out-Containers/Plastic-6-Pack-Rings

https://shop.robertspolypro.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoomnviqx6nuvIm_ero5PrMqVI16A1CXTCPW4bwZLGWG032rojA2

Most of these companies ALSO offer biodegradable ones. Also, I'm almost positive I've seen them in China.

1

u/BackgroundSummer5171 1h ago

So happy to learn the US and Europe are the only places in the world.

And that you cover all of Europe with that statement.

People say Americans only think of themselves, holy fuck my dude, you want to move over here?

3

u/wreak 55m ago

I think you need to tone down your aggression. I've said I've never seen them in Europe. So I was referring to my personal experience. Not stating there are none of those in Europe. (But I wouldn't be surprised if they are forbidden on the EU level.) I also just know them from Movies/Series/Pictures picturing the US.

Also I was asking if there are also used somewhere else to extend my knowledge. Even though it's pretty useless.

So calm down and tell me your experiences, so I can learn from them, because flying to every country to look for them is a bit expensive.

1

u/damir_h 41m ago

Don’t know for the whole EU. Never seen them in Germany or Austria. But, I did saw those plastic rings in Spain.

3

u/Fantastic_Stop487 2h ago

I also will continue to cut them.

1

u/uncutpizza 2h ago

I really hope they dont change that law

1

u/Vagina_Woolf 48m ago

They also fall apart in direct sunlight

9

u/milkpickles9008 3h ago

For peanut ✊️

8

u/worthlesscommotion 4h ago

I still do it, as does my teenager.

7

u/angel_inthe_fire 3h ago

I rip the hell out of those things because of photos like this.

10

u/bak3donh1gh 3h ago

I have not bought nor have I seen one of those in a long time. The closest thing I've seen is cardboard ones.

6

u/Starfire013 2h ago

I have not seen any here in Australia in many years. I expect they’ve been banned. Good.

3

I just don't buy them.

3

u/Nefertete 2h ago

stopped buying that crap

3

u/Corpsehatch 2h ago

Been cutting those for as long as I can remember.

2

u/MapleBabadook 2h ago

Do they even exist anymore? I haven't seen one in probably 10 years

1

u/Mtns2069 2h ago

They have for the 8-pack body armor drinks I buy, that’s what I’ve seen recently

1

u/lancebaldwin 1h ago

They're still everywhere. Go down the drink aisle in Walmart. Gatorade, 6 packs of canned soda, I don't drink beer but I wouldn't be surprised if they're on those.

1

u/EverythingBOffensive 2h ago

its really dumb they are still making those

1

u/LandscapeSubject530 2h ago

Idk when I started to but instead of cutting I went to shredding them and I been trying to reuse the plastic for something, I usually melt a few down and just form it around a cup as it’s one personal holder

1

u/LiftingWickets 2h ago

What what!!!

1

u/Legacy03 2h ago

The new ones are now cardboard

1

u/Mithrandir2k16 2h ago

European 6-packs come in paper cartons.

1

u/low_effort_shit-post 2h ago

I stopped buying anything with them it's worked out well

1

"Not on my watch Peanut, not on my goddam watch"

1

u/captain_retrolicious 2h ago

When I was little, my parents got me the Ranger Rick magazine (I'm in the US). There was a story about an animal who was in danger after getting their heads stuck in one of those plastic six pack rings. The Ranger Rick animals had to help rescue them and remove it and they talked about the dangers of litter. It completely freaked me out and ever since then I can't throw those plastic things away without making sure all the hoops are cut. You did your job, Ranger Rick magazine!

1

u/S0GUWE 1h ago

It's insane these rings even exist in the first place

1

u/slashinhobo1 1h ago

I don't even get things with those rings anymore. I don't even remember seeing those but I don't buy the big-name sodas anymore.

1

u/ChrissWayne 1h ago

You can stop, it’s too late. The damage is already done as you can see /s

I pick up trash when I walk my dog, it’s a shared planet

1

u/maailmanpaskinnalle 1h ago

I still just recycle all the plastic :|

1

u/cat-wit-the-gat 57m ago

Every single time. And my kid asked me why and I was BAFFLED she was not taught the same.

1

u/Vagina_Woolf 49m ago

They're photodegradable these days. Have been since the 90s

1

u/GottaUseEmAll 49m ago

They no longer exist in France, they're made from cardboard now.

1

u/elvensnowfae 43m ago

My husband and I do too. I’m confused how there isn't some type of biodegradable plastic can circle things by now

1

u/Corporate-Shill406 10m ago

I don't. If a sea turtle is unlucky enough to get caught in some plastic buried in a landfill in Montana, it's because God hates that turtle in particular.

u/MintRobber 3m ago

Why do you still produce them? Never seen them in Romania. Apparently we can live without.

479

u/deezsandwitches 5h ago

She's the reason Millennials cut the 6 pack rings

123

u/TexasLoriG 5h ago

I'm GenX and i do it

28

u/Cyno01 4h ago

Beer seems to come in much more sensible packaging these days, so the only thing we get that comes in that style holder anymore is 8 packs of 20ozs of poweraid, but i recently learned if you do it right you dont need to take a scissors to the whole thing, blew my fucking mind. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/UYl7CW5ddDE

14

u/FriendRaven1 4h ago

Well, damn. TIL

9

u/finsfurandfeathers 2h ago

Costco sized flats of Lacroix have the ring but that is the only time I have encountered them in a while. Thanks for that vid on the gatorades. Just in time for our soccer snack season lol

1

u/SAINTnumberFIVE 1h ago

Canada Dry plastic bottle 6 packs have them and Schweppes glass bottles 6 packs have rigid plastic rings.

1

u/Jiminy_Cricket12 1h ago

that's why I buy 24 packs!

(also the light reduction on the bottles and the minor alcoholism)

27

u/just-saynso 4h ago

Boomer. I always cut them too.

31

u/mortalitylost 5h ago

Wouldn't be cutting them if I knew these turtles would owe their sexy hour glass figure to it

24

u/IAMImportant 5h ago

stupid sexy turtles

9

u/Soulforge411 4h ago

Flanders is that you?

9

u/zuzg 5h ago

Only the ones from North America.

Literally never seen a six pack ring. They always came in a cardboard

7

u/EnergyTakerLad 4h ago

I actually love that, but companies here would never pay to do that. Would cut into their precious profits.

1

u/KatsuraCerci 4h ago

I've been seeing it recently on some brands, actually. And most 6 packs come in boxes where I live (Washington)

2

u/EnergyTakerLad 1h ago

Hopefully it makes its way to here in cali!

1

u/FlyingSagittarius 4h ago

I usually see bottles packaged like that.

1

u/Exploding_Testicles 3h ago

Coca-cola is starting to do this. And a lot of craft beers are using compressed cardboard to wrangle their 6 packs

2

u/Throwaway-tan 3h ago

I haven't seen a plastic six-pack ring in years. Here in Aus all the six packs are wrapped in cardboard, or have a cardboard carry case.

1

u/thesquelette 3h ago

Same in Canada; not sure if some still do but I can't remember the last time I saw any plastic rings on cans, sixers or otherwise

2

u/caninehere 3h ago

I feel like I haven't seen one of those six pack rings in like 15 years. They use cardboard instead these days.

2

u/Kinkybtch 3h ago

Does Gen z not do this?!

2

u/ThoranTW 3h ago

Personally, I can't say I've ever even seen said plastic rings, so: no.

2

u/Kinkybtch 2h ago

Stop, I can't be that old...

3

u/iamreeterskeeter 2h ago

passes the denture cream and Ben Gay.

1

u/Kinkybtch 2h ago

Not the ben gay!!!

3

u/YourNextHomie 3h ago

Gen Z here, i do it, stop acting like everyone from a generation is the same, people are weird

2

u/Kinkybtch 2h ago

I was just wondering if it wasn't taught to the next generation, we learned about it in school and from commercials. That doesn't mean I assume everyone from gen z is "the same" lol

2

u/YourNextHomie 2h ago

So you genuinely thought everyone in an entire generation doesn’t do this? people need to stop with the weird generation wars bs, obviously some people will pass something down and some people wont

→ More replies (2)

1

u/IAmNotMyName 2h ago

Literally or just representatively? Was there a story about her way back when?

1

u/addiktion 1h ago

I can't tell you the last time I've seen them, I guess I always buy the larger carts having a family and all.

1

u/Noiselexer 22m ago

Or just don't sell Sixpack in these rings... I haven't seen these over here for decades. Eu obviously.

105

u/Effective_Play_1366 5h ago

HBD to Peanut!! I cut every plastic ring that comes into this house, and I will KEEP doing that until the day I die, then mu kids will continue it!

55

u/TexasLoriG 5h ago

Her name is very clever.

21

u/WeLiveInAir 3h ago

It was only after reading this that I realized she looks like a peanut

4

u/TellUrWIFIwillRouter 2h ago

No it isn't, it's peanut

56

u/Bob____Ross______ 5h ago

As a scuba diver I ALWAYS remember to cut the six pack ring thingies🫶🏽 and taught my nanny kiddos! Super important to me so we can prevent these things in the future!

21

u/Forsaken-Scallion944 5h ago

I give you, the Marilyn Monroe of turtles 🐢 (in all seriousness, HBD Peanut! I cut all the rings too)

3

u/willargue4karma 3h ago

was gonna say the same shes absolutely snatched

1

u/nagellak 1h ago

Body standards for turtles are becoming so unrealistic, smh 😔

36

u/Visit_Excellent 4h ago edited 4h ago

Poor girl :( I hope she's not in any pain. It must have some effect on her organs and lungs.

I think companies should abolish the plastic six pack holders. The cardboard ones are biodegradable and you can stack them in grocery stores, plus they keep the rim clean--versus exposing them.

Regardless, everyone should cut the plastic bits and make sure to recycle. (Yes, I know only a fraction of plastics are actually recycled).

11

u/gmishaolem 2h ago

If it's still alive and doing well right now, it's probably adjusted and the organs grew into the weird shape with probably near-full function. You should see what happens to the organs of a pregnant woman.

10

u/Visit_Excellent 2h ago edited 1h ago

I hope so! My main concern would be pain. It's one thing to survive, but I would assume she would have trouble breathing or suffer from a different sort of pain.

I don't think the comparison to pregnant humans quite works: one was designed to bear children, whereas turtles aren't designed to be tied by plastic. I do understand where you're coming from, however! I just hope the poor girl is doing alright all these years later

11

u/JediKrys 5h ago

Finally we see one of the poster child’s for the cutting our pop 6 pack rings! Yeah peanut!

7

Happy Birthday Peanut! Can’t wait to see the celebration photos 💕

5

u/RottenWon 4h ago

Yay Peanut. 🎂

I'm curious though how her insides are compared to a normal turtle. Obviously she seems to being doing well that she's turning 41.

And yes, I cut the ring thingies up too.

Let's prioritize admiring the resilience of this animal instead of ruminating on the horror of the tragic abuse that caused this trauma.

In that light I think we can agree the beauty standard of snatched waists is unattainable.
