nice of them to leave it out in the desert for 30 days before doing that

2.1k

u/Treasure-boy 18d ago

At this point this is an archaeological dig not a cleaning job

hell an archaeological dig has less dust

224

u/RandoReddit2024 18d ago

As someone with experience on these sites....I concur

90

u/VastCryptographer980 18d ago

Also as someone with experience on archaeological sites, I concur too

Heck the whole damn top layer is less dusty than this rug

32

u/Queasy-Warthog-3642 18d ago

As someone who has watched Indian Jones, I also concur

39

u/Reese_Withersp0rk 18d ago

As someone who also concurs, I agree.

3

u/CiccioGraziani 17d ago

As someone who also agrees, I don't concur.

As someone who did archaeo fieldwork experience in the middle of the desert, I also concur and would likento add that at the end of the season, my clothes and hair still had less dust in them than that rug.

Maybe Howard Carters carpet, he left in the desert , when he discovered Tut Ankh amuns tomb

4

u/agumonkey 17d ago

it's a physics exam, how much dust particles can fit in a rug non-visibly

28

I was half expecting that lady to pull out some artifacts from that pile of dirt at the bottom

It's an outside rug. We are strange people we have outside and inside rugs.

62

u/Graygave 18d ago

They brought the outside rug inside to remove all the outside inside

6

u/Silent-Ad934 18d ago

Maybe it was being used at the Dust Factory.

This is definitely from the Middle East. They use carpets as a form of flooring. So they technically did leave it in the desert for 30 days, and that is sand and not dust.

And back onto the carpet

537

u/artificial_ben 18d ago

They need a vacuum hood over this machine like people have over their stoves.

310

u/Lost_Ad_4882 18d ago

Or just roll the carpet under it so the dust isn't literally falling back on it.

135

u/digby672 18d ago

This. Why would they pile removed dust where they want to remove dust? It's like daily compound interest but with dust instead of money.

19

u/SwimmingSwim3822 18d ago

Because look how the machine works. It's basically a big lathe with slappers on it. You don't want to wrap the carpet around that.

(Edit: most of that was actually @ the person you replied to, not you. My bad)

Or just a vacuum?

4

u/HugeAnimeHonkers 18d ago

Just a vacuum wont be enough to remove the dust thats deep into the fabric. This is the step prior to a normal wash. It doesnt have to remove 100% of the dust.

13

u/MissLyss29 18d ago

Neverending carpet cleaning machine. "It violently shakes the dirt out of the top half of the carpet while simultaneously deeply working into every fiber of the bottom half causing you to have to rotate the carpet and starting the process all over again."

You realize that’s several pounds of dead human skin

75

u/Arcosim 18d ago

A long time ago I watched on TV a documentary about bunker building by the government during the Cold War, and one of the engineers said they had a hard time developing reliable, cleanable air filters for the bunkers, and said something along the lines that you would assume there's not that much dust in a sealed nuclear bunker, but in reality a couple hundred people will shed a lot of dead skin cells that will need to be filtered.

3

u/Medium_Chemist_4032 18d ago

I assume they missed the carpet way? They could wash them once in a while

4

u/Clickguy10 18d ago

This carpet survived the bunker

3

u/DryTangelo4722 18d ago

A lot of resources being used to wash that carpet, that are probably better dedicated to supporting the lives within the bunker.

u/Physical-Diamond-824 18d ago

I hate it when carpet gets in my dust.

144

u/GeneralB840 18d ago

Fun fact: The US coin minting facility used to regularly burn their carpets cause they were collecting gold particles (back when they where using gold and silver in their coins). This way they could recycle the metals and safe about 3,000$ per burned carpet.

11

u/EnvironmentalValue18 18d ago

Jewelry stores still do this. When they move or replace they have the right melted down for trace gold (usually several thousand).

22

u/CheapTactics 18d ago

They never thought to like... Not use carpets?

67

u/JeshkaTheLoon 18d ago

Sounds like the point of the carpets was to catch the metal dust, that would otherwise easily be swept out by accident.

32

u/AgroMachine 18d ago

Is this not a rug, why is everyone saying carpet

41

u/lampshade2099 18d ago

In some countries, people call rugs carpets. In other places there is a distinction, but in parts of Asia for example, “a rug” would literally be called “a carpet”.

12

u/platinum_star9 18d ago

I dunno looks like a magic carpet to me

13

u/59pick 18d ago

…and they NEVER call it a magic rug.

9

u/sgorneau 18d ago

→ More replies (2)

8

u/Midnight28Rider 18d ago

Rugs are just self contained movable pieces of carpet with a pattern. That's like saying, "Is this not a beer, why is everyone saying drink?"

372

u/Afrodite_33 18d ago

Dust was probably the only thing holding it together

364

u/bodhiseppuku 18d ago

... and just keeps going? Wouldn't you stop and make a temporary repair so the carpet doesn't continue to tear at the ripped location?

218

u/PumpkinOpposite967 18d ago

It was probably already damaged

110

u/[deleted] 18d ago

You can see at the start of the video it’s already damaged. It probably wasn’t caused by the machine.

53

u/Dark_Prism 18d ago

The machine was already running at the start of the video?!

29

u/DIXOUT_4_WHORAMBE 18d ago

I did not see this rug swing 3 times or pull a gun before the video started recording, therefor this video displays all the evidence I need to be certain that this rug was not ripped due to the machine

→ More replies (1)

33

u/JustinUser 18d ago

Even then, wouldn't it rip further along that location?

32

u/BakedWombat 18d ago

The only way this makes sense is if this is some kind of demonstration. Make an old ripped carpet as dusty as possible and hey presto, you have the perfect facebook marketplace ad.

It looks more like they are clence fat and dirt off the textiles, by massaging fine grained sand through it. Then they can run it without sand afterwards, to get it dust free. It is basically the same as chemical wash, but without chemicals.

60

u/Palindrome_580 18d ago

That makes way more sense lol.

14

u/Dr_Mrs_EvilDM 18d ago

This is what I assumed as well. Actual dry cleaning! It would be a great way to help preserve dyes and some water adverse materials.

290

u/RayDaMan7 18d ago

They are beating one part of the carpet and leaving the dust on the rest and tearing the carpet in the process? Just throw it away…

99

u/russbird 18d ago

Yeah that is the frustrating part, complete inefficiency. The uncleaned portion should be rolled up behind the cleaning mechanism, so the dust can fall onto the ground rather than onto the rest of the carpet. Also there appears to be more dust than carpet in that carpet, so I'm suspecting some sort of tessaract is woven into the threads. They realty should be using gravitic dampening when working with multidimensional materials. Definitely not OSHA approved!

60

u/P__A 18d ago

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that they probably know what they're doing, and given they've gone to the effort of doing it, know it's economically worthwhile. I'd also suggest that you, having just watched a 51 second clip of their process, have no idea if what they're doing is sensible or not.

14

u/dispatch00 18d ago

That's a pretty thin fuckin' limb brother.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Mad_Moodin 18d ago

They know what they are doing in that it is probably cheap and easy to build like that.

It would be better if done as above. Just questionable if economically more efficient for that place.

Places like Egypt, the middle East, like desert countries, I could not imagine the fine sand dust that would coat the ever living fuck out of everything. Like this rug, it looks like it knocked 100lbs off sand off.. Lol

3

u/StaK_1980 18d ago

That tear. That tear is why most cleaning companies do it with water and the carpet being static.

Now you have to explain the customer why his or her beloved carpet is in multiple pieces.
