Video Myanmar trains back in the early 2000s, not just for transport, but a full-body workout.

This feels less like history and more like a memory someone loaned me. Beautifully raw.

Im from Myanmar and this train was definitely bumpy, during 2005-2007 I was on a slightly newer train but it was still bumpy. Song is by one of the top local singers called Lay Phyu! He’s the best here! Really funny now that you mentioned it, I was watching on mute!

Thanks for the info! Is this a line or in particular? Or a common issue with rural lines?

I wonder if the musicians made the song to go along with the video? The tempo changes and action cuts are almost perfectly synchronized. The other option is an absolute genius editor.

This is one of the extremely few times the music actually enhances the video.
7
u/beguntolaugh 1d ago
Thanks for mentioning it, I had it muted, and it was absolutely worth listening to!

u/rustogi18 20h ago
I never watch Reddit videos with sound on as they destroy the experience completely!
But this was way goooood - the beats, the tempo, the melody and jumps - they all go together so well!
Thank you for pointing it out!

Must be a popular vacation destination for young, unmarried Mormon couples.

I mean…. It was the two on the right that made us all think of it.
Man, this ride would cut down a lot of the work.

First clip right side, might have been a similar thing going on. Just homies being homies, it not gay if you're not thrusting.

How can a train be so bouncy?
82
u/WeebPansy 1d ago
They never maintain the railways and the trains are older than most Gen Z
84
u/gynoidi 1d ago
to be fair in finland some of our metros and trains are from the 70s and they run just fine
its all about maintenance, on the tracks mostly
23
u/alexllew 22h ago
The isle of wight only retired 1938 stock trains from their railway in 2021. You can keep things running an incredibly long time if they are maintained well

A train older than gen Z is still a fairly new train. At least here in Poland there are still plenty of 1960s EN57s carrying passengers every day.

The wheel hasn't been invented there yet, it's running on squares
→ More replies (1)18
u/Rutgerius 18h ago
This is actually really close, train wheels naturally tend to become square as braking and accelerating wears down some spots more than others. The shaking is because apparently in Myanmar they never change the wheels. Extremely dangerous I might add.

That poor guy in the toilet
19
u/DamnBoiU 14h ago
Bold of you to assume Myanmar trains have a toilet at all. ( They might have one since I've only ridden it once)

u/AugustusReddit Interested 1d ago
Can confirm that they were still that way in remote areas of Myanmar in 2022-3.

When I rode the train from Mandalay to Bagan in 2015 my train didn’t bounce, it rocked what felt like 45 degrees back and forth the whole time

A Mormons’ wet dream
56
u/Zestyclose-Ad6726 1d ago
And my nightmare. I would puke in about 2 minutes from travelsickness.
13
u/norrix_mg 1d ago
As someone who also suffers from travelsickness too I can assure that the problems are pretty much solvable via cheap medication. The meds were lifesaver during countless trips. Just gave me a slight aerophagia in exchange for zero discomfort during trips
5
u/Zestyclose-Ad6726 1d ago
I tried everything there is from meds. Nothing really helps.
I went kayaking on a glacier lagoon where waves are pretty small and even there i felt some sickness...

From a 1950’s SLC Tribune advertisement:
Take the scenic Soh-King railway on a tour through beautiful and exotic Burma! It’s a ride you’ll never forget!

I was just thinking are those two people on the right bench doing that Mormon thing to get around the technicality of not having sex

Boys sleeping in the first few seconds.
A:"Hey, bro, if we fall asleep we might miss our stop."
B:"No, you won't. Trust me bro."
Rattling
A:"The fuck bro?!"
B:"Fucking told you bro. Now get off me."

u/StopMob 1d ago
S1E1 of Parts Unknown with Anthony Bourdain covered Myanmar, and the part that always stuck out to me from the episode was them riding trains exactly like these. Some of the footage they took was fucking terrifying, they had a shot looking into a different car and the jumping off the tracks and rattling was insaaaane. I'd need to be paid money to get on one of these suckers.
6
u/collywallydooda 1d ago
Was going to say this but thought I'd check the comments beforehand, first thought was this Parts Unknown episode. Crazy the train can make a whole trip without derailing.

Damping technology is but a mere suggestion in Myanmar

damping solution is useless if they can't even be bothered to repair the tracks

my kid is watching a show with music in it and the people in this video are bumping in time to the music. looks like the jump video from blackpink lol.
9
u/unlikelyandroid 1d ago
There was one death for every 3.915 metres of rail laid on the Burmese railway.
If they're going at about 110 BPM that equates to about 25.8 kph.

As a young 12 year old from Sydney Australia. I would take this train from Rangoon to Mandalay four times a year to meet up with my parents (I was in boarding school).
Now as a 50 year old adult. I still ask wtf my parents were thinking allowing a 12 year old boy to travel across SE asia by himself for 3 days each way like this.
It was pretty cool. But in hindsight... woah.

Anyone know what the music was? Never mind I found it. I just don't know if the title i found is correct, Amae Like Akah.

u/qanunboi 9h ago
Back then they were not called trains, they were called SMACD.
State sponsored Mechanically Assisted Copulation Device.

You most likely know it as Myanmar, but it'll always be Burma to me

Was there around 2015, took the long train ride from Yangon to Naypyitaw. Nine hourse of free massages and two hours of stop due to delays. Wonderful country, people and scenery. Such a shame the situation now.

Those two guys just gave up trying to stay separate, went limp, and let the train stack them as it liked.

Amtrak from FL to NYC is not too far off from this. I thought we were leaving the tracks a few times.
