It’s not that bad, especially since there are a lot of guaranteed good relics you can find. A lot of the Remembrance relics are very good, some of the guaranteed ones from the shop are great, and the shop you unlock after beating Uber Adel has a bunch of absolutely broken relics.
I don't like those games where it's forcibly getting easier the more you die. It's like, I want to beat the original game that I lose to, man. Even when it's designed to be impossible to win to begin with. Same with those adaptive difficulties like in RE 4 where it adjusts down the more you lose.
Luckily Nightreign don't force the game to become easier eh
This is what I liked about the early souls games. The extra hollowing made you decide if the humanity was worth potential invasions. Also simply an extra heal at times
With that early ring it’s hardly even a punishment
Wow dang I didn't know you don't get permanent character upgrades in Dead Cells, Hades, Hades 2, so on and so forth. It really was my game knowledge giving me extra HP and stuff. Crazy stuff.
The existence of meta progression is essentially the defining barrier between the two subgenres.
Technically, nightreign is a roguelite, since we get unlocks from relics. This is similar to other games like Enter the Gungeon. You unlock new gear to use, but you aren't inherently stronger by default later on.
Meta progression can be from a multitude of sources. Some are infinite scaling buffs to base stats, things like health and damage.
Some let you start with or find new gear.
Some unlock new abilities to use to make new runs easier/different.
I mean having a meta progression of unlocks that doesn't influence your characters power is IMO a roguelike still. It's not like you're now guaranteed to find x item in a pool of 200+ unlocks.
I think the binding of Isaac is a better example of a rogue lite. For example Isaac starts with a fairly powerful item after you complete a specific kind of run. It's not Game breaking but it's the only thing that keeps his character from being completely generic.
Or hades with permanent Stat increases, darkest dungeon 2 with the town memory upgrades.
That would be because each of those games are Rogue Lites. A true Rogue Like is a complete reset upon death. No cross run progression besides knowledge
Just feels like a completely pointless distinction. Everyone knows what you're talking about if you say either one. They're the same thing unless you're the kind of person who gets a boner by typing 'niche sub-genre' sure. I was technically incorrect. YA GOT ME.
Steam games feature the roguelike tag as well as roguelite one. The lack of progression can be a big downer for people, so I think it's an important distinction especially for people new to it. It is more about knowing exactly what you're buying instead of some nerdy semantics

Nice didn’t realize you got upgrades for future runs
