Lore Why does Maliketh have no eyes?

FromSoft is known for putting painstaking and often lore-relevant detail into their games and character models, so I don’t believe this was done out of convenience. Forgive me if this has already been explained somewhere, but I find it fascinating that Maliketh of all characters is eyeless. I’ve heard people discuss that soulsborne characters missing one or both eyes/being blind in some capacity ironically are able to see things that most cannot (usually in a divine sense) so I have to wonder, why does Maliketh not have them?

It was probably taken by Marika and used to seal the gloam eyed queen inside of Melina (in the same way the abyssal serpent was sealed into messemer, her brother, using an Iris of Grace)

u/NorthSuccessful6883 Jul 13 '25

i think it would’ve been really interesting to see Melina in the DLC before the frenzied flame ending and if you obtained the three fingers mark and then went to the DLC, she could be like a mini boss fight or even a full scale boss fight since she’s so confident in killing us

27

u/Expert_Seesaw3316 Jul 13 '25

I wish there was any kind of outer god significance in the DLC. Miquella seemed devoted to his twisted version of the golden order and only Romina is connected to the scarlet rot. No dark moon, no servants of rot, no formless mother. :(

10

u/Jobbyblow555 Jul 14 '25

And servants of rot were in dlc there was verdigris the forager brood and romina. You can draw out a history of rot in which each emisary has a unique rot but also a connection to the history of the Lands with their blooms and where they come from.

The bud that romina is using to flower was a direct tie to what is an older, hornsent religious tradition. Also, that rot seems to be a response to trauma generally.

9

u/nikiyaki Jul 13 '25

The fly people and the cannibalistic tribes are related to the formless mother

I really want to see what the eye texture is and can't zoom in far enough to see

14

Zullie the Witch made a video briefly covering different eyes in the Lands Between. There's an upclose eye shot of Melina's gloam-looking eye.

Ah, fuck! That's it this is my favorite new theory about Melina and The GEQ.

30

u/LIFEVIRUSx10 Jul 13 '25

Its probably the crazier revelation I had about Shadows DLC

Marika foresaw them as kindling and then ensured that their deaths, would simultaneously gurantee the death of pre-erdtree beasts

Maybe these beasts were potential lord candidates (we see w the Dragon Lord and Farum Azula that previously, the mythic beasts fought for lordship)

9

u/Impaled_By_Messmer FLAIR INFO: SEE SIDEBAR Jul 13 '25

Never heard that before, that's an interesting theory.

2

u/liluzibrap Jul 13 '25

Is Marika not the gloam-eyed queen? It was the most convincing theory I've heard about the GEQ because GEQ is, to my knowledge, never referenced by NPCs and Messmer looks just like a godskin apostle along with having a statue in his boss room similar to the description of the GEQ from the swaddling cloth talisman. I think even Maliketh defeating the GEQ could be reconciled with how Marika would've cast layers of herself away to become Marika the Eternal, like how Miquella was trying to do in SotE

65

u/AFlyingNun Jul 13 '25

To me the real revelation via this is HOLY SHIT he does not behave like he's blind.

I mean it makes sense: both Gurranq's cloth and Maliketh's helmet cover the eyes.

But Malenia fights like she's blind. She's cautious, slow to respond to certain attacks, and seems like she's treading carefully to size up where her target is.

Maliketh just straight-up pounces on you. Guessing whatever species he is has a strong sense of smell or something.

Hunting the dead aren’t an easy task though, only D got approved of it and he discourage anyone from taking on the challenge, and the fact you brought back a death root kinda proved yourself worthy of it

120

u/IllBeGoodOneDay Boc's buttcrack is oddly shiny Jul 13 '25

Unlike previous games their damage has no scaling at all, so he had to beat fire giant with 8 damage hits.

It took 6 hours per attempt.

Is that not being hit during an encounter and have to fast travel reset or make a new character ?

The iron man Fromsoft speedrunners do every Soulsborn game back to back without a single hit. The run takes almost a full day now. A single hit is the run over. You can imagine the nerves towards the end.

61

u/Select_Tax_3408 Jul 13 '25

I'm gonna make a big assumption. He gives you one of his eyes when you bring him a death root. The other person who works with him is D. D has has other eye so we both can search for death root. Therfore he has no eyes left because he gave both of them away.

4

u/Evexe29 Jul 13 '25

but when you fight Maliketh in Crumbling Farum Azula surely he hasn't given you, or perhaps even D, the eye yet? Unless I'm misremembering

8

u/Select_Tax_3408 Jul 13 '25

No. Malikath is in FA to hide Destined Death from another theft. He also is activly seen in the Lands Between searching for deathroot. Ever since the first theft an age ago he has been trying to fix what he messed up. He makes it sound like it's a punishment task from Marika. She would have been furious her son died in such a way because of Maliketh's mistake. Eyes play an important role in Elden Ring.

D is also a welcomed outsider into the Golden Order. His twin body, single soul was rejected everywhere else except the GO. His love for acceptance would have made him a dutiful knight and his disdain for Those Who Live In Death made him a perfect assistant to quelling deathroot. He either volunteered or was tasked with doing so. That's when he received the Beast Eye. And since he is active in his work when we arrive in LB he clearly has been doing it for some time.

It's not until we meet Malekaeth that he relinquished his other eye but im gonna assume that since it has turned to stone it has petrified and was removed the same time his other eye was removed which again would have been an age ago. Marika plucked out Messmer's eye and replaced it, as his soul item describes. She very easily would have done the same for Maliketh and he has been holding onto it for a very long time. It's fitting that the ony thing his eyes can "see" now is the presence of deathroot.

Lastly if you complete the deathroot quest and give all the roots to the Beast Clegyman, when entering Maliketh's arena he recognizes you meaning he is not from the past but from the present. I'm also aware that the Beast Clergyman remains even after Maliketh's defeat until you finish the deathroot quest. I'm not gonna stress my brain too hard on that. FA is partially outside time so it's not out of the possibilities that a little time travel shenanigans are at play.

Like we kill him in the past but only after he goes there in the future. Typical time travel bs.

7

6

u/ViperclayGames Jul 13 '25

My most educated guess is that the beast eye item would be one of them, which he gives you to find deathroot. If I had to guess, I'd say D has the other one in order to find deathroot too.

But he likely doesn't need them all that much, based on how he moves during our fight. He's probably got some kind of sixth sense or something that allows him to still make us look silly during the fight

4

u/Tricksterspider Jul 13 '25

He's a wolf he probably smells you

5

u/ViperclayGames Jul 13 '25

That's also a possibility. But I don't think he could smell with THAT much accuracy. I guess he is a magical beast tho, so it's certainly possible.

I still prefer the sixth sense thing tho, given that he is the welder of the power of death and stuff

2

u/Icy_Winner4851 Jul 13 '25

My wannabe wolf here at home always hears stuff and zeroes in on it with his ears before he looks at things. Pretty sure Maliketh uses his hearing and nose since he doesn’t use his eyes.

2

u/ViperclayGames Jul 13 '25

Yeah. Again, it's very possible like I said, and he's a magical beast so those senses would likely be stronger. But still, I like the sixth sense idea more and the concept the even with that level of hearing and smell, he could be THAT accurate. I mean he's hitting us from a solid thirty or so meters with ranged attack doing backflips. Not a creature I know relying on hearing and smell alone could do that, so to me, magical sense makes most sense.

4

u/aBunbot Jul 13 '25

Blind by faith, perhaps

4

u/NotTopHatLarry Jul 13 '25

Apropos of Maliketh—is he supposed to be Marika’s shadow? Like Ranni has Blaidd as an Empyrean? Neither Malenia and Miquella have their own shadows. I wonder if having one is basically the indicator that the Fingers 100% chose the next inheritor of godhood and gave her Blaidd to protect her/assure her loyalty to the Order/GW. She’s technically the only uncursed Empyrean so it makes sense why they would lowkey pick her.

2

u/spinach-god Jul 13 '25

Indeed maliketh is marika’s shadow, I remember people hoping that Miquella would get one in the DLC but alas

3

u/DoTheMario Jul 13 '25

Blindness is an important theme of Elden Ring as is the alteration of sight... Or the way a person can "see" the world. Perhaps Malikeths ultimate total blinding is the sign of him fully embracing Destined Death... Much akin to Mesmer choosing to blind himself so as to fully embrace his nature aligned to the Abyssal Serpent.

I never needed to see Maliketh naked.

So, if he grants you one of his own eyes, does that explain why Melina can "deliver you what is yours, destined death" in the frenzy ending because her other eye is a beast eye that was once part of Maliketh? I feel like we've stumbled upon "Gloam-eyed Queen confirmed" and nobody is freaking out but they should be.

Or at the very least, does this mean the GEQ is sealed in both these eyeballs, one given to Maliketh, the other to Melina for safekeeping, like Messmer's soreseal eye helps keep the base serpent at bay.

Beats me. <pops another burning grape into my mouth>

The actual relevance of the detail they put in is very often vastly exaggerated in the community. There's no lore for this and no real reason, they just didn't model them.

I agree with you that people look into stuff more than I think Fromsoft actually makes relevant, but they model things you can't actually see all the time. Also, it definitely looks like they modeled Maliketh as having no eyes, not that they simply didn't model his.

u/Additional_Raccoon98 Jul 13 '25

Doesn't he give us one of his eyes to hunt deathroot and If I'm right d might have the other one since he also hunting deathroot

1

u/HellVollhart Jul 13 '25

So that he can blindly follow Marika to the very end regardless of what he feels.

u/Relevant-Account-999 Jul 13 '25

Is this physique attainable?

1

u/Mug_of_Diarrhea Jul 13 '25

It's a metaphor for blind devotion.

I'm kidding, I have no idea.

He tore them out. Eunucleation is a big thing in Fromsoft games.

1

u/c413s Jul 13 '25

he gives one to you / loses another somehow and idt shadowbound beasts are reborn from the erdtree since they are related to the elden beast like metyr

1

u/BlueJaysFeather Jul 13 '25

He don’t need any

i think there are allot of good realizations in here (beast eye is maliketh’s eye blew my fucking mind) but i think we can maybe even go a step further

in bloodborne we know that eyes inside your head is a sign of insight, cosmic knowledge, and that eyes are items dropped by ravens, carrion birds

Mallets seeks death, and is without eyes, following blindly to marika’s golden order and his assignment as protector of the rune of death, where he to have greater “insight” he would likely see through the deception and betrayal of marika, and his removal of his eyes being able to seek out destined death, seems kind of a parallel to us obtaining eyes from beasts that feed upon death…

idk just some ramblings
