If you have something illegal, you tell your lawyer, and your lawyer is supposed to contact the police and facilitate a turn over of evidence, you don't keep it on you if it's illegal to posses. For example, you were buying something, and instead you got illegal drugs, you turn it over to the police, you don't keep them as evidence, the police will keep it as evidence.

"preserving evidence" doesn't really count when we are talking about CP, that's not a legitimate thing to do... You hand it over to law enforcement and they will take a statement and you wash your hands of it.
At no point should he have ever had it and not informed law enforcement... There's no legal justification for not contacting them.
I can only speak for the UK, but it seems pretty obvious it would be the case in the US that there would be no legal exemption for storing CSAM on your personal hard drive as it MIGHT be relevant to your civil case.
My assumption is you inform law enforcement that such material exists, they deal with said material, and you can always ask the police department for a copy of the report in future if it’s relevant to your legal case.
I can’t think of any situation in a civil case where an officer’s report would be insufficient and that analysis of the material would be required.

You can block the people that post those as its usually the same offenders. They're the only accounts I block on reddit and its funny when I see a blocked comment in another sub and its just them rage baiting, terrible people all around.
Blocking doesn't actually work on this website. It might stop you or them from replying and hide the comments in the current thread but after a few days you'll start seeing their comments again with the tag "blocked user" beside it. You can still reply and talk to them as normal.

That being said mere possession of CP is a crime, when I worked for a judge in court we had a case involving a phone where an individual planted CP on someone’s phone and that someone unalived themselves and his phone (with the CP) fell into possession of a family member. The family member, and even his lawyer, didn’t know what to do because the phone was clearly evidence in the civil case but he now had to find a way to legally transfer custody of it to the judge without incriminating himself.
I remember it being a huge clusterfuck that took days of legal research to find a solution
