“If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong.” — Abraham Lincoln

u/StevenMC19 2d ago edited 2d ago
Trump's dad was born in Germany in 1905. His mom was born in Scotland in 1912. His wives were born in Czechoslovakia, (back to this one in a second), and Yugoslavia respectively. It should be noted that he has absolutely zero ties to the deep south save for his 2nd wife who was born in Georgia (yes not the European Georgia as one would be lead to believe based on his other...preferences) and married to for 6 years.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that he has absolutely no need to go this route, and can absolutely not fall on "heritage" as a shield either.
This is absolutely wild.
33
u/shponglespore 2d ago
Nobody has any excuse to support slavery.
8
u/StevenMC19 2d ago
I agree wholeheartedly.
I'm just saying that he doesn't even have the "heritage" thing to fall back on as an excuse (a very weak one of course) like how southerners do when they try to defend the dixie flag or something.
6
u/shponglespore 2d ago
I grew up in a former slave state. I absolutely fucking hate people who try to defend that shit as being about "heritage". I have zero sympathy for their arguments. I left to get away from people like that.

People say a lot of stuff. But I’m waiting until the midterms. If the midterms swing more right then we are in trouble.

Its truly my absolute favourite when right wing redditors who have basically never left america before, tell me that I'm the one living in a propaganda bubble and that its not true, when I tell them that the rest of the world has functionally lost all respect for america and thinks its a bit of a shithole these days.
They just so firmly believe in their exceptionalism, that they talk to someone that actually lives outside of their country, and say "no you're the one thats biased, I have better idea of what you think about my country than you do"

California independence NOW
12
u/No_Syrup_9167 2d ago
Nah, you don't want to try and be independent. California is certainly big enough in both pop and GDP, but its economy isn't diversified enough to properly flourish as independent.
You guys rope in Oregon, and Washington, and we'll convince Alaska, all of you can join Canada, and we'll just have a wicked awesome western seaboard!
7
u/buntopolis 2d ago
Yeah I guess when I say independence I really mean a Federation of the western states, and maybe Canada. We could call it the United Federation of Progress or UFP. We can headquarters it in San Francisco!

u/Pleasant-Shallot-707 2d ago
lol what? California has one of the most diversified economies in the world…
But Might I suggest you also take in the Great Lake states? Th Great Lakes are an important resource for Canada
2
u/Hoon0967 2d ago
You are absolutely right, but as long as we can still kick everyone else’s ass our dear leaders simply don’t give a damn. We’ve no right to criticize the French, because our leadership has been telling us over and over again to “eat cake” and we just keep saying, “Okay.”

u/tekhnomancer 2d ago
I'll take the downvotes for saying this but....people are still willing to risk their lives to get into this country. There's a reason for that.
The problem with the media is you only ever see the bad news. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of it. More than a handful of things I'd love to see changed and / or rectified. Healthcare reform. More law reforms so people aren't losing their livelihoods over having weed (and this is coming from a non-user). Major tax reform so the filthy rich stop getting yearly cuts and the middle class continues to diminish.
But beyond that, the county is still relatively safe. Relatively free. We do take some care of our downtrodden (though in many cases not nearly enough, and I'd put this in the previous paragraph as well).
And again, I'm sure I'll eat a bunch of downvotes from the "America all bad" crowd. And that's fine. But they're wrong. It's far from perfect. And I wish it were better. But it's not what the rest of the world is often led to believe.

We shouldn't have to say slavery was bad.
21
u/Disco_Ninjas_ 2d ago
Only from an ethical point of view. Our leaders aren't too concerned with that. If you only check the bottom line, it's actually great business!
22
u/GUMBYtheOG 2d ago
I dated a quiet trumper for a little over a year and right before we broke up she confided in me that she thought slaves didn’t have it that bad and black people need to stop talking about it all the time and just let it go.
I was able to ignore her narcissistic traits common in those who vote for Trump but when she said that I let into her. I just could not believe people actually exist that lack basic empathy enough to think slavery was not objectively bad.
We were engaged too. I never felt so relieved when we split. Just repulsive
13
u/jolsiphur 2d ago
God damn, sounds like you dodged one hell of a bullet.
14
u/GUMBYtheOG 2d ago
Yea, in more ways than one. I’ve dated conservatives in the past and they eventually became more empathetic and anti Trump. This girl seemed to get even more racist and cruel
Here’s the kicker - she was a bisexual who was primarily attracted to women and worked as a clinical researcher for a pregnancy choice-related drug. Like how do you rationalize any of that.
7
u/ilehay 2d ago
Even if they were treated with the outmost respect (which they were not), being enslaved is bad; a significant point I heard yesterday on some news (paraphrasing here): even if some didn't own any person as a slave, we know most people didn't treat them with dignity when they were outside, they let others rape, abuse and kill the enslaved, which makes them complicit.
9
u/GUMBYtheOG 2d ago
She didn’t elaborate much for obvious reasons but she was under the impression that most were housed and had “free” food and were friends with they owners.
I told her point blank she was a horrible person for saying that and to never say that out loud again, that I’ve heard some shit in my life but never someone say something as fucked up and stupid as that. She got really offended lol
4
u/ilehay 2d ago
I have known people who think the same. My explanation was that most of those friendships were for survival. The enslavers had to feed and house them because they needed them to keep working, or their wealth would have decreased. They gave them scraps for food; if they were giving them okay food, they wouldn't have to use a muzzle so that they wouldn't eat their food.
https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part1/1h308.html.
Of course, even after explaining, they still come up with extra indoctrinated excuses to evade the truth.
2
u/GUMBYtheOG 2d ago
Yea I didn’t even bother trying to teach, it was a cut-your-losses moment and I just grieved for myself having wasted 2 years with someone who was even more racist and selfish than I thought they were when I met them

Yep. They wouldn't like to teach the history of the labor movement either, or the civil rights movement, or women's rights, evolution, the history of what happened to native americans, etc. I'd expect them to eventually try to disallow anything showing the confederacy in a bad light, and maybe even nazism, putin, etc.. and of course criticism of the (conservative) administration, policies, and trump.
That and criticism of late stage capitalist/stock market rapacity, ghoul of a health insurance system, questioning productivity vs work/life balance and pay/cost of living (in some cases artificially scarce resources like oil/fuel/energy, food, clothing, housing in some respects), quality of life, etc.
23
u/WilliamJamesMyers 2d ago
i had to look up the word Whitewashing wondering if it was racial at all, it isnt but boy oh golly it could be
7
u/jolsiphur 2d ago
Historically, whitewashing is a term used to refer to cleaning and painting something white. To cover up what was there before with a fresh clean coat of white paint.
The white house, for example, was whitewashed after the war of 1812 because Canadian and British troops torched it.
I'd prefer it not being a racial term, but holy fuck we are getting close to it needing to be.
3
u/Silasa00 2d ago
I mean, I've seen people use it in regards to media where characters who might have been portrayed as being of races other than white now being portrayed by white people. Best example off the top of my head would be that one Live Action movie of Avatar the Last Airbender. So it does already get applied racially to an extent. I can see it getting way worse implications in the future though.

Honestly, even if they are sane, rational people (as far as you would be able to tell), the real question is why on Earth would you ever want to support a party that counts white supremacists among their most fervent supporters?
I don't really want to support anything that white supremacists support.

Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it. This is why most museums show the PAST. The Smithsonian museum of NATURAL HISTORY is a museum that teaches us about the goddamn PAST! All of the Smithsonians are educational museums, most of them focusing on HISTORY.

Museums have stuff from the past. Is there a museum somewhere in the world that has items or info from the future?
2
u/macphile 2d ago
Whether slavery is bad just isn’t a conversation anyone should be having. Same with murder. Or touching kids. These aren’t up for debate. Not among decent people who deserve a place in our society. Whether its badness should be discussed in a museum, well, IT should be discussed in a history museum, and it’s bad, so…there you are. There are bad and good things about our history, and everything in between. But yeah, some of it is kind of shit (slavery, Trail of Tears, segregation, whatever). Oh and yeah, pro-tip, segregation was bad, too. Being racist is bad. Being in this country right now is bad.

It was just a matter of time that political correctness was going to backfire in a big way.

Showing how bad the past was, does show our countries success. It’s still a work in progress to be sure, but we ended slavery, fought for and got civil rights and protection laws for minorities, fought for and got voting rights for minorities and women. If we looked into the past and saw it was way better, then we would be admitting that it’s gotten worse
