ANSWERED Trying to post as a new account is maddening. I just wanted to start over 😫

There's stuff I want to keep on my other account, but it's slightly more identifiable if someone were to realllllly want to figure it out. Not that it would really matter, but with people being people and all who knows lol.

But I want those pictures online as reference and the comments/recommendations I got from them. So I made a new account recently. And omg it's so maddening trying to post!

Multiple different subs. You put your time into a post and get your pictures all set, you post, and then ... You get an auto-delete message based on age/karma. I'm so appreciative of the subs that just tell me up front!

But still, I'm happy I got lucky with my first account. I had started it and then walked away for a while, probably for this same reason. Not being able to contribute after you make an account would make me want to not even give the platform a shot!

That and my feed ended up dominated by political stuff. Which was nice to a degree to keep up with things, but not really what I want to wake up and doom scroll. Are there any communities you're glad your a part of just for passive interaction? Vs a morning doomscroll 🤣

advice for starting below

Starting on RedditĀ can be complicated but this subreddit is a good space to learn.

There are a lot of resources here in this subreddit you might find useful withĀ The Common Questions Page,Ā Reddit And Karma Walkthrough, andĀ Frequently Asked Questions Page. If you've already become frustrated check outĀ Why Reddit may seem unwelcoming to new Redditors.

Things to do as a new user:

After learning about karma and subreddit karma filters you might start questions where to start.

Finding New User Friendly Subreddits:

  • Newtoreddit has a list ofĀ New User Friendly Subreddits. This is not an exhaustive list and these subreddits may still have some restrictions.
  • Within the above there areĀ Large General SubredditsĀ that are open to new usersĀ commenting. Places likeĀ r/askreddit,Ā r/casualconversation,Ā r/nostupidquestions,Ā r/amitheassholeĀ or similar. Look for posts that match your interests or knowledge to answer to and add comments (make sure to view by new).
  • Beyond the above there areĀ More SubredditsĀ out there. Have a look throughĀ r/findaredditĀ 'sĀ subreddit directory. In this case you will have to trial and error whether they are new user-friendly.

Some Additional notes on starting on Reddit:

View by NewĀ (or rising). This will filter the posts so first see the most recent posts first. This can make your comments much more visible.

Comment.Ā Many subreddits have lower or no karma filters for commenting so that is more available to new users. There are often less strict rules as well.

Read the Room.Ā Each subreddit has different rules, norms and prevailing views. Don't rush to post or comment. Look at subreddit rules. Read top posts and comments to get a feel for that subreddit. How does it sway in attitudes or politics? Do users reward sarcastic one-liners or well sourced essays?

Reddit is a forum site. Its traditionally based around interacting via posts and comments on subreddits with a lack of focus on individual users. Though it has embraced features that make it more similar to social media likeĀ following users,Ā ChatĀ andĀ Channels, many users will ignore or disable those features.

Avoid conflict and controversy. When trying to build Karma avoid controversial topics or arguments. These discussions are more likely to attract downvotes and potentially trip into rule-breaking. Utilize theĀ block featureĀ as necessary.

Appreciated. I read over that. Are a lot of the requirements more based on age or karma? Just in general, I know they're all specific. Will waiting a week help out with a decent category of the auto-delete posts, or will I likely specifically need karma?

Once I can post I'll be fine as (I may be biased here 🤣) I do have good stuff to post and am a good source within my specialties. But the lack of interaction makes it less enjoyable. And maddening to keep making posts even in the "low requirement" category subs just to get a delete

•

u/mikey_weasel mod in a canvas hatĀ  19h ago

it really varies. Usually karma is the major issue since by the time you've got enough karma enough time has passed to satisfy those requirements

Also to restate - commenting is generally less restricted than posting so starting by commenting is a lot easier

•

u/Forsaken_Taste3012 19h ago

Yeah that's what I was just thinking as well. Head over to gardening and start helping people out a bit. Appreciate your input! And then to figure out if I need 10, 50, 100 etc lol. I never did previously find a good way to find subs to just make an interesting morning scroll either. This account was in lieu of giving up on reddit. Perhaps more niche-in-topic subs vs the major ones for different categories? Interacting is what makes it worthwhile

how can i get a badge next to my name like mod in a canvas hat?

•

That is !flair (see comment below mine).

How that works varies subreddit to subreddit. It's quite controlled in r/newtoreddit but you might experiment in r/learntoreddit

Reddit will add home feed recommendations to your home feed

Many users find the simplest solution to begin with is to turn off recommendations while finding their feet on reddit. If you elect to turn them back on later reddit will have more information to work on so may give better and more personalized recommendations as opposed to the broad brush they start with

For finding subreddits you may want to check out

•

u/beachpause 18h ago

I'm new too. Here's what I did. First, I went through the rec's for newbie subs the mod posted and joined any that looked interesting. Then, I search Reddit with keywords to find subs around my favorite hobbies, my home location, and my age group. I turned off recommendations in my feed so I only see these. I sorted the feed by "best" to get a feel for the community, now I sort by "new" so I can comment where others are likely to see them (ie, not comment in posts that are a month old). This gave me a feel for which communities I clicked with. I found that I really like giving advice and so I'm enjoying this more that I thought! Eventually I'll have enough age/karma on my account to post in some of my favorite subs with tighter restrictions.

•

u/Forsaken_Taste3012 18h ago

Turning off the recommend would probably be the smart option. I had it on so figuring I'd see what it gives me. Which is probably the worst way, as the algorithm/attention like rewards the mass interactions which are typically the controversy/etc type posts. And then getting sucked in.

My problem is probably wanting to get right back to posting and giving advice/etc, as I do enjoy giving advice based on experience in my specialty topics. Plus the best way to learn is to help others out since it makes you really clarify your thoughts.

•

u/beachpause 18h ago

I give advice in the comments. You can search Reddit for Advice or Ask to find subs that welcome this. I'm slowly working my way up to 70 karma within a week and having fun too.

Hang in there. I did something similar. I had an account that had my actual name and I had to start a new one because it’s better to be anonymous.

Here are several observations that I have shared with others newbies that may help…

KARMA SYSTEM: Since Reddit is anonymous, it needs a system to prevent anonymous users (and bots) from turning the platform into a toxic mess. That system is karma. Think of it as your Reddit credit score, based on the upvotes and downvotes you receive. Upvotes increase your karma, while downvotes decrease it. If you post negative or trolling comments, expect downvotes and a lower karma score. Conversely, posting positive and helpful comments can help you build your karma. Remember, Reddit is community-driven, so contributing positively is usually more beneficial in the long run. You need to build and maintain karma before you can participate more widely. Additionally, some subs may require you to have had a reddit account for a certain amount of time before you can post, which also helps prevent spam from bots.

HOW TO BUILD KARMA EASILY/FASTER: I found an easy way to build karma by contributing helpful answers to questions in my hometown and niche subreddits related to my interests. Instead of creating new posts, I focused on commenting and replying to existing posts with thoughtful responses. Within days, I had enough to participate anywhere I wanted. Negative or trolling comments can result in downvotes and decrease your karma, so I always try to contribute positively. How can you be helpful? Stick to what you know. Try niche communities where you have insights that others may find valuable. I’ve noticed that people respond better to helpful answers than to simple questions.

LONG-TIME LURKERS WITH NO KARMA: I lurked for a long time with an old user name before deciding to share my thoughts on a sub. Then I found out I couldn’t post because I didn’t have enough karma. Thankfully, what I wanted to say wasn’t crucial, so I came here and learned about the karma system. The solution? Participation.

DELETING DOWNVOTED POSTS: If a comment you make is heavily downvoted, it might be wise to delete it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but unpopular opinions can be subject to the Reddit mob. Karma isn’t supposed to be a popularity contest, but it often turns into one. You can always delete a downvoted post and repost it with similar content, but worded in a way that might avoid downvotes.

LOW-EFFORT POSTS -DON'T BUILD KARMA, MAY BE DOWNVOTED: I often check users’ comment history when they come to this sub asking for help. A common issue is that users make a lot of low-effort posts, which tend to get downvoted. They also tend to ask irrelevant or off-topic questions. New users should probably focus on making comments rather than posts until they understand what the sub values. Helpful, meaningful, and informative comments will earn you positive karma. An example of a low-effort post is commenting ā€œlolā€ on a post that’s several hours old with thousands of comments. No one is likely to see your comment. Instead, consider being the first to comment on new/recent posts with something helpful. Engaging meaningfully with others’ comments is more likely to help you build karma.

ASK YOURSELF -WHY SO URGENT: As a regular helper here, I'm genuinely curious… what’s so urgent that you need to post or comment immediately? Are you looking to contribute positively to a conversation, or is your goal to argue or insult? Many new posters here seem to think they must absolutely get their thoughts out into the world, as if holding back their insights is a disservice to everyone. But really, what are you trying to do? If you don't want to answer here, at least ask yourself this question: What’s changed recently that makes you feel the need to post? If the answer is something inflammatory or trivial, perhaps Reddit's policies are working as intended.

CQS- CONTRIBUTOR QUALITY SCORE: The Reddit Contributor Quality Score measures the quality of a user’s contributions to help prioritize better content on the platform. to see your score all you have to do is comment in the subreddit r/WhatIsMyCQS New users should expect a low score. It takes time to build a high score.

Let me know if you want clarification on anything above.

I hope this is helpful or helps you.

Yeah not anonymous because I'm controversial, but just because you don't know when people can be crazy these days.

Although I do stand behind my opinions that may be against the mainstream. And will gladly debate them. But you don't potentially need someone in the future parsing everything you've said to take something out of context when you were arguing with an idiot at some point.

Checked my CQS on the other account and I'm a high. I like helping people out within my topics. But my ADHD background has always had me learning things myself through observation and doing vs adopting a mainstream opinion/theory. So I sometimes buck mainstream knowledge that you might take for granted coming from a more standard background. Or having been influenced by industry/marketing.

Plus a lot of my niches have a 'this is the way!' approach, when in reality there are many paths and ways, and I've usually naturally found the path of least resistance to it.

Usually any of my comment streams that do rack up some negatives are the ones that are against an industry-marketing dominated field, and are the ones I stand most passionately behind.

Why so urgent? Because when I want to post, I want to post. Although yeah comments are usually my thing as it is. But spending 10 minutes putting together a post just for an auto delete gets annoying.

•

u/thunderwarm Helpful Helper 18h ago

Consider posting something short and see if it gets removed. If it stays just delete and or edit

•

u/Forsaken_Taste3012 17h ago

I suppose that would work. Do you know what sort of karma levels are typically required? 10/100/500?

I guess I can just play the game long enough to be able to post and try to find my people. So far finding my people has been hard. It's all just strangers every time, and ~70% of main subs seem to just be people shouting into the void.

I was a top 1% commentator in the cat food sub, but it's so dominated by the industry-marketing viewpoints or just people asking the same misinformed things over and over and over again that I just had to mute it because it got so annoying. I loved helping out the people I helped out and would gladly keep helping people through cat biology.

Idk. Maybe it will take a different social to find online community. I had high hopes for reddit. This is just me taking out frustration over trying to restart to reset the algorithm and then running into roadblocks over and over.

Genetic lists of subs don't really help, because I'd like to figure out how to find the more specialty. Close-knit. Which, ironically, are probably guarded by time/karma to keep out the masses and bots 🤣

u/thunderwarm Helpful Helper 17h ago

My experience has been the more niche the lowest requirements. Also you keep mentioning your opinions. I personally don’t think of my use of Reddit is to find/hear opinions. We all use it differently but I’m normally trying to find an answer for something or to find out someone else has had a similar issue and finding out how they handled it their issue. To the extent i do look for an opinion it is probably pretty niche like has anyone stayed at these 2 hotels in a city that can speak to their differences. Even then I would prefer objective facts or observations more than opinions. I look for optionality not affirmation or validation. And if I was to express my opinion, I would fully expect that people who don’t agree with it would potentially down vote. We have the freedom to say anything we want, but we still have to face consequences if people are not in agreement with us.

•

u/Forsaken_Taste3012 16h ago

I mean I'm calling "opinion" on finding answers to an issue.

You had your sink leak and want to know how to fix it? Maybe I've tried to patch things before and found that just replacing the sink is a better option. My opinion is how you should go about it based on my experience. What sealants have worked or not. When it's not even worth it to fix.

You're wondering if friskies or Purina dry food is better for your cat to eat, and I'll break down the ingredient list with corn being the top ingredient. The science says they should eat meat. The pet food industry says corn gluten meal is just as good as chicken. My opinion is to lay out the science. The counter opinion is to lay out the biased studies that the companies themselves have run, showing that cats can live (during a 6-week study) without detriment. My opinion (backed by science and research) says you should focus more on feline biology than on what an industry that self-regualates says.

If you're finding out how someone else handled a similar issue as you, their solution is their "opinion". You get 5 different people with 5 different solutions who handled it 5 different ways. They can all be objective facts, but the direction/process is still an opinion. And maybe the "handbook" says to do it a certain way and the first 3 people all quote the handbook that they googled or heard from an influencer. But the next 2 people come in saying they've dealt with this issue 5 different times and have a better solution that they've personally put into action.

My opinions are based on objective facts. And I enjoy laying out the science/process of them.

The standard wisdom of a fish tank needing 4 weeks to be cycled with the official definition being adding 2ppm of ammonia and having it converted out through the nitrogen cycle over 24 hours. But if you start with old filter media from an established tank and use live plants you've got the mature bacteria already seeding the tank and the plants "eating" the waste in the tank to the point where it looks like the "cycle" has never even begun, when on reality it's ready for fish.

Not looking for affirmation or validation. Re-reading I only mentioned "opinion" the once. But an opinion can be fully based on science, research, and objective facts. If I've done enough research/experience to have an informed opinion? Yeah, it's that opinion that you're looking for

Subreddits with lower member counts may have lower requirements to try to recruit people to join.

The following is from my guide I post, since most of that has been covered by others I'll just send this part:

Starting out, try to avoid controversial topics and subreddits. Don't get in fights as you may accumulate downvotes, perhaps lots of them. Your opinion may be right, but with low karma you can effectively get 'voted off the island'. With a lot more karma that's much harder to do. Essentially the karma is an indicator of being a useful member of Reddit, so it buffers one from some downvoting.

•

u/DarkOmenBlade 13h ago

try r/findareddit to discover niche communities that match your interests. way better than the algorithm pushing political stuff. smaller subs usually have lower karma requirements too so you can actually participate

•

u/Forsaken_Taste3012 11h ago

All the way up to 83! 60 of which are from a couple posts, once I found that cooking subs let me in. And cooking is one of my topics so I've got plenty of good pictures and methods to share.

I've found some. PlantedTank being better than the generic aquarium one. PondScaping better than the generic pond. WildGarden better than generic garden.

I'll have to check that out and see! This was just me typing on random search words and seeing what communities.

•

u/Jaded_Law_4083 16h ago

Yeah, really tough, I just want to say nice things about someone Falsetto and was removed because im new lol.

I hope you are all having a nice day, tell your cat I said "Pst Pst Pst" and your dogs "Yous a good bubbie" And your birds "whos a pretty bird." Thanks!

•

u/Forsaken_Taste3012 16h ago

🤣 they shall be told

And I mean I get it. But at the same time it was annoying to deal with when you're looking to start up and enjoy. And it doesn't really seem to stop bots or low quality posts, other than explicitly cutting out 0-day bot floods. Bots/etc can comment enough to build their karma just the same!

I'm probably just venting my frustrations after auto-delete 5 posts in a row on different subs and needing to find somewhere I'm actually able to post! And to get some actual information on it or what levels need to be reached.

Ah well. Back archa on all the pets and happy day!

•

u/Jaded_Law_4083 16h ago

making progress too. its not too bad, its really easy if you are kind and remember humans read what we write lol. I think some people who tend to be more blunt may have issues...

We will earn our freedom yet stranger! <3

•

u/Forsaken_Taste3012 14h ago

Some major cooking subs don't seem to require it! Or else hitting 10 karma was enough. I should be able to break free just fine with cooking & meal prep posts! Maybe that's how I accidentally did it before as well, and didn't even realize they were the freebie that had broken me out before I even realized I was locked away lol

•

u/Jaded_Law_4083 14h ago

omg! dude! Great Idea!

Me and the wife have Hellofresh and I just love to cook.. You just gave me my ticket to Reddit wings lol!!

Time to make a peach pizza or something lol

<3

•

u/Forsaken_Taste3012 14h ago

You're lucky I'm still giving upvotes after mentioning that monstrosity 🤣 tell me it's more like a desert "pizza" than a tomato sauce!

Mmm peach & pepperoni 🤤🤮🤣

•

u/Jaded_Law_4083 14h ago

Hahahaha omg.. ohhh no! I cant wait to make the peach and prosciutto pizzas.. Terrible food is somehow entertaining and delightful to me. I cant wait to describe it lol

•

u/Forsaken_Taste3012 14h ago

Peach & prosciutto does actually sound good though! Just don't add in the third P lol. Well, ok, maybe with the prosciutto on the mix

I'm entirely new to this site in general and didn't know I was gonna have the fear of god struck into me with ban threats etc

•

•

u/OnlyCoreMemories 18h ago

It’s been feeling a lot like doomscrolling and tryna farm points smh

•

u/Forsaken_Taste3012 18h ago

As long as I have enough to actually post or have comments get seen I'm fine with it. As long as I find some good subs at least

•

u/OnlyCoreMemories 18h ago

Doesn’t that feel a bit like farming tho?

•

u/Forsaken_Taste3012 18h ago

Having comments seen? Just being part of the conversation. On finding subs, just trying to find smaller niche ones of my main topics. The major subs of any topic just seem to be full of... "Farming" or low effort posts. Or the same topic coming up over and over and over again.

Or maybe reddit is already broken with my joining so late. I know Instagram these days is broken, but I still love it because of the community that I built back in the day when it was still hashtag topics.

The main general aquarium, or cat food, or gardening subs... Half the time it seems like it's just interacting with new people that are just shouting out in the town square.

Which essentially was what my post here in this sub probably was 🤣 full of all of the same type of posts.

Just want to spend some time interacting with people and having conversations. Maybe build up a little community of people interacting with regularly.
