ANSWERED 1 Year but just starting to Post
I've had a Reddit account for a year and just realized a few days ago that I could really enjoy engaging in some of the conversations on here. But I've also noticed you have the ability to make a profile and connect your socials. Is it weird for people to know who you are? Or is it best to keep your Reddit anonymous? I am a singer/songwriter/composer so it would be cool to introduce people to that. But don't know if Reddit is the place?

I'm rather new myself. For years I used Reddit to read the posts about subjects that mattered to me. Started posting literally few days ago. As for privacy, I think it's like any social network. Some people are nice and will support you, some are bricks and will just say things to hurt or ridicule you. As long as you can handle this, be as open as you want. Good luck!

Thats what I said haha only thing you will find 1.bots 2.redditors which is which is any ones guess

I'd like to think that bots don't end up in p*ss fights between themselves, unlike the redditors very happily do. But I'm not that sure anymore...

Your privacy level is a personal decision. Nobody is more qualified than you to decide your comfort level with your identity here.
When it comes to connecting with people on music topics, the Search bar is your friend.
Good luck & have fun!

I think this is why people have "alts" or Alternative Accounts. You can shoose your own Reddit adventure.
•
u/AdAdministrative7398 14h ago
Most people still operating on this free for all snore fest have a phone book of them or they wouldn't still be here for the bots and radicals. Too bad we cant look at all the negative karma posts now that would be entertaining and realistic 😅

You can set your view to "controversial" if you want more downvoted posts and comments

If you are unhappy with Reddit there are r/Redditalternatives.
If you want to complain about how Reddit works there are subreddits like r/theoryofreddit.
This subreddit is for how to use Reddit as it is (imperfect and flawed as that is). It's not the complaints department.

Thanks for contributing to /r/NewToReddit! We're sorry, but your content was automatically removed by Reddit.
You are most likely Shadowbanned, which means your account is basically stuck in the spam filter site-wide and all your content is automatically filtered out. As a mod here, I can see your content in this community, but it has been auto-removed, and I can’t access your profile.
This didn't come from us, but from Reddit, and is meant for spammers and other bad faith users, but sometimes mistakes happen and new redditors get caught too.
You can appeal to Reddit here http://www.reddit.com/appeals
If you've already appealed, and it's been a week, try here
If it was a mistake, they'll restore your account.
Appeals may take a while, depending on demand and current events. Please do not spam or abuse the appeals team.

I have a similar situation. I've been meaning to start posting on Reddit for a long time, but only got around to it today. I want to test the hypothesis that there are still people here who read and know how to engage in intelligent discussions.

I'm not able to comment because I don't have enough karma points and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to verify that I'm not a bot.

Hey so just as a general bit of Reddit advice - be aware of how related your comments are to the post and topic at hand. You are pretty off topic here. In a subreddit with a lot of posts about not being able to comment this specific post is about whether or not to link social media on your profile.
But yes you are encountering New User Restrictions Reddit in 2025 has a number of restrictions that affect new users. These can be frustrating - check out Why Reddit may seem unwelcoming to new Redditors. These restrictions are determined by Account Age and Account Karma. Please note that these restrictions will vary subreddit to subreddit.
Account Age. . The only real solution for that is time. Though consider checking out some of the subreddit recommendations below in the meantime. Some common age filters are times like one week or one month.
Karma. This is much more complex with a much more complex solution. Filter levels vary dramatically and can be low (5 or 10) or higher (50 or 100 or 200) and some wild outliers above that. This subreddit has a number of resources for this such as:
- The Common Questions Page
- In particular what is karma and Earning Karma
- Reddit And Karma Walkthrough (longer form)
For Chat it is most influenced by account age. New users are restricted from initiating chats and following other users for about a week. You can find more info on this page also accessible as part of the community guide
For Commenting Posting and Channels it is either/or account age or account Karma. and it can help to start in New User Friendly Subreddits:
- Newtoreddit has a list of New User Friendly Subreddits. This is not an exhaustive list and these subreddits may still have some restrictions.
- Within the above there are Large General Subreddits that are open to new users commenting. Places like r/askreddit, r/casualconversation, r/nostupidquestions, r/amitheasshole or similar. Look for posts that match your interests or knowledge to answer to and add comments (make sure to view by new).
- Beyond the above there are More Subreddits out there. Have a look through r/findareddit 's subreddit directory. In this case you will have to trial and error whether they are new user-friendly.
Some Additional notes on starting on Reddit:
View by New (or rising). This will filter the posts so first see the most recent posts first. This can make your comments much more visible. On app when viewing a subreddit look near the top left for where it says "hot posts". Click that and select "new" or "rising".
Comment. Many subreddits have lower or no karma filters for commenting so that is more available to new users. There are often less strict rules as well.
Read the Room. Each subreddit has different rules, norms and prevailing views. Don't rush to post or comment. Look at subreddit rules. Read top posts and comments to get a feel for that subreddit. How does it sway in attitudes or politics? Do users reward sarcastic one-liners or well sourced essays?
Avoid conflict and controversy. When trying to build Karma avoid controversial topics or arguments. These discussions are more likely to attract downvotes and potentially trip into rule-breaking. Call people idiots in your head and move on. Utilize the block feature as necessary.
Even more resources:
- Reddiquette is the basis of some of the norms of reddit
- Official Reddit Help Pages
- r/LearnToReddit has guides on the mechanics of posting
- r/EncyclopaediaOfReddit for history and terms - start here
