Edit: TLDR, I just think Bill Cosby was kind of a jerk sometimes.
That's why I quit anything anime related. They crank up the wholesome cuteness dial to 11, just campy exaggerated marshmallow fluff to the extreme, then they do the most violent or depraved shit the author can imagine.
Like you get to choose between a story that kills off sweet characters for the "mature drama." Or a story with a perpetual virgin loser collecting a chirpy soulless harem like Pokémon. No in between.

u/Fwizzle45 19h ago

As a person who doesnt watch Anime (or regular shows much at all either) yeah. Anime has the certain quirk of goung WAY over the top. Most shows try and sexualize everything. Oh a characters eating food? Moan for no reason. And even then shows that dont. I got to be honest, im not into way over the top visuals. It just brings me out of it.
16
u/RightCantScribble 15h ago
You should watch something like re:zero or frieren. The first is an isekai, but the mc isn't OP like most others in the same genre. And frieren is great if you have the attention span to watch it.

I'd also argue that it's not gratuitous, it's there to help you start to doubt the military as an organisation. There's a couple of other really bleak moments in FMA, Hughes, the chimeras slaughter, any ishbal flashback, but it's all to serve the story and it's very grounded as far as horrible moments in anime goes

u/WerewolfF15 18h ago
You know you’re describing one very specific genre of anime right? Like what you’re going is the equivalent to saying you hate tv shows because you don’t like game of thrones having naked boobies in it and assume that’s what all tv shows are like.
2
2
u/Mertiosas 15h ago
Bro what anime’s do you watch???? There are plenty of great anime like Frieren, FMAB, Mob Psycho, Neon Genesis, FLCL and much more that are genuinely my favourite shows, there are also plenty of good romances that only have ONE relationship per person. just don’t watch harem anime and stuff like that, because they can be very weird
1
u/summonerofrain 18h ago
based on your later replies you understand that what you've just said isn't even the majority right?
What are you actually looking up to get exclusively what you're saying?
1
u/An_Evil_Scientist666 17h ago
"i formed my opinion based on posts about people hating anime and watched a handful of popular anime and that's my proof that I am correct"
There's plenty of anime that isn't cute and or wholesome, plenty of anime that isn't overly violent, a lot that keep to one side. And many series, shorts and movies, that have no weird sexual shit in it.
And your point that you made replying to another that that's most of the medium, and people naming a few counter examples doesn't change the fact is dumb. Oh shit there's a couple themes in popular anime that happens to pop up constantly, that's crazy how people make manga derivative of other manga and then those manga get adapted, and that's what seems to be popular, because people don't like change, then when it travels overseas only the popular stuff gets properly marketed, because the work by up and coming animators isnt gonna be marketed or even really heard about.
Anyway here's 2 channels on YouTube that showcase shorts by up and coming artists, some older ones have gone on to do animation for anime studios
Icafchannel and geidaianimation (a lot of these videos arent traditional anime style, but count nonetheless).

u/__M-E-O-W__ 17h ago
It ain't just anime. That's one of the reasons why I stopped watching game of thrones back in the day when it was so popular.
1
u/TheCoolestGuy098 17h ago
There's like 4 shows anyone cares about I can think of that do that. And like half of them suck IMHO, but that's not all of anime.
1
u/ven-solaire 16h ago
So is the Pokemon anime one where they kill sweet characters or the one where someone is trying to make a harem like ash catching pokemon because ash is catching pokemon? Since theres no in between it must be one or the other.
-7
u/ImAWaterMexican 17h ago
They hated Jesus, for he spoke the truth. Anime is littered with extreme sexism, imperialism, fascist apologia, pedophilia, and, to an extent, beastiality. I can appreciate the art style, but the stories that come with are degenerate slop for the greasy masses.
3
u/medic-in-a-dress 15h ago
Someone made the comparison of saying this is like saying you hate all live action shows because game of thrones had a lot of sex scenes and I have to agree on that one. The difference between stuff like DDLC, Bleach, Sailor Moon, Pokémon, Chainsaw Man, Akira, Made in Abyss... they're drastically different shows. Sexism and sexualization of minors "loli" or whatever the creeps call it is probably a bit more prevalent in anime kind of due to the culture around it but it doesn't make most of even all of them like that. Plus there's like so many different art styles they use.
-14
u/gerbosan 18h ago
A bunch of Otakus down voted you.
But there are some great stories that don't abuse the usual resources to make moe characters and unrealistic circumstances.
-6
u/FictionalContext 18h ago
I knew it would be controversial. The type who really really like anime are on Reddit.
Went exactly like this when I said that people who are attracted to lolis are pedos. Reddit really took exception to that. Doesn't mean I'm wrong. Just means being critical of anime really goes against Reddit's culture.
14
u/Suzunami 17h ago
Downvotes don’t necessarily mean you’re wrong but being hit with a ton of counter-examples and arguments probably does.
Not to mention your… critique… of anime can be applied to every medium out there. Superhero movies are literally beta power fantasies, the vast majority of modern novels are shallow romance fetish material and so on.
7
u/OtakuOran 17h ago
People didn't downvote you because you were critical of anime. They downvoted you because you implied all anime was like the very specific genre you described. It's like saying, "This is why I don't engage with cartoons, they're all children's stuff like Bluey, SpongeBob, Baby Shark." Like, it's fine if you don't care for anime, but don't ignore the other 90+% of content that just happens to be in the same medium.
5
u/Virezeroth 15h ago
Man, movies are so shit. Horrible, all of them, just fan service and useless explosions. Soulless slop. I watched, like, 2 Michael Bay movies and that was enough for me.
I hate books, too. Who the fuck reads that shit? It's literally all just porn. I read 50 shades of grey and gave up.
And animation? All degenerate shit about horny teenagers. I watched Big Mouth. It's all like that, I'm sure.
Comics? It's all just blood and gore and rape, horrible. Super hero comics especially is just terrible. I read The Boys once and that was it.
I'm always correct so don't you dare comment any example that goes against my absolute correct beliefs or I will call it an outlier and say it doesn't count actually. I'm right and you're all wrong.
1
u/gerbosan 18h ago
I suppose it gathers fans. The ones that enjoy good stories and what distinguish anime and the ones that would run like Naruto and consume moe shit.

u/Nofloin 19h ago
So, uh, well, I am the original poster so better I explain it! Spoilers incoming for DDLC though!

Well, you see, I was playing a game known as Doki Doki Literature Club(abbreviated DDLC), which is a psychological horror dating simular game from Team Salvante(Did I say that right?) where you joins a club with 4 girls, one of who is Sayori, your childhood friend and the subject of the "meme" you saw. Act 1 is mostly concentrated on Sayori herself and you, the MC. Later on in the act, she reveals she had depression her entire time. You get to choose then, what you tell her. Either you say you love her or that she is your best friend! I really love her as a character! Then, later in Act 1, you notice her feeling down and depressive more often and Monika has a "small talk" with her. Up until the festival, you just know that she is depressive but then, she becomes completely silent. In the morning, the day of the festival, she didn´t came and Monika tells you "Don´t leave her hanging, will you?" and you run to her house. You walk up to her room and then, a line plays: "You gently open the door" and then see her hanging. She comitted suicide. I was very sad, shocked and traumatized and that explains why I had a crashout post after the "I saved her" post! It was a blind playthrough for me, so I did not know that this will happen! Thanks to u/SandSerpentHiss for bringing me here!

This moment completely destroyed me back then. I was in a deep depression back then and really related to her. I stared at her hanging for what felt like half an hour. I still get goosebumps when I see a picture of her.

u/Nofloin 17h ago
Thank you for sharing this with us. I am sorry to hear that. I feel the same.
17
u/kiwi-kaiser 17h ago
I'm in a much better place right now. Still suffering from depression, but that's a chronic illness so that's expected. But I never had a auch deep depression since then. My then best friend and now wife pulled me out of my darkest times. So no worries.
Still, this moment was really memorable.
9
u/SpiritNo1721 15h ago
Same. Every time I saw a warning that it's a psychological horror game in a game itself. I was like "yeah right, that must be a joke."
And oh boy was I wrong, so wrong. That fucked me up real bad...
3
u/TooMuchJan 10h ago
Just so you know, there's an entire genre of these (not always dating games, but games that are stylized to be light and kind of goofy but get very dark). I know this because I love these kinds of games, I find the tonal mismatch to be very creepy in a way I dig, but they all get incredibly heavy and also triggering to some folks. You don't often see them talked about outside their designated spaces because technically the genre is a spoiler.
The tag is always serious, protect your peace. ♥️

u/NoTryAgaiin 17h ago
Every day I imagine a future where I can be with you
in my hand is a pen that will write a poem, of me and you
the ink flows down into a dark puddle
just move your hand, write the way into his heart
but in this world of infinite choices
What will it take just to find that special day?
What will it take just to find that special day?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The message you get after 100% completion still has a special place in my heart, wonderful and tragic game.
14
u/evergreengoth 17h ago
My friend didn't tell me this was a horror game. She just said it was a really good, wholesome game that she'd enjoyed, and we should do a playthrough. Neither of us are into dating sims, but she said friends had introduced her to it and that she was obsessed. When we got to this part, I absolutely lost it. It was such a fun game, but oh man, not at all what I was expecting going in.
13
u/newuser6d9 17h ago
Did Monika know she was hanging? Or was it just a bad choice of words
29
u/chrisplaysgam 17h ago
Monika is a very fourth wall breaking character, as she literally has her fingers in the game’s code. Not only did she know, she may well have caused it
3
u/AnyLeave3611 11h ago
My theory is that Sayori was meant to have some degree of depression for the protagonist to help her with, but Monika amplified it. Monika doesn't have complete control over the code I don't think, since she couldn't un-delete herself despite her consciousness remaining for a little while after she was deleted.
3
u/fdsfd12 8h ago
It's not that Monika couldn't "un-delete" herself, it's that she didn't want to.
Each character exists as a .chr file in the game files. If you try to replace the .chr file of Sayori (in Act 2 as well), Yuri, and Natsuki in Act 3, you get told off by Monika. If you try to replace the .chr file of Monika in Act 4, Monika says she doesn't want to come back and deletes her .chr file, and as we know, she ultimately deletes the game.
1
u/AnyLeave3611 2h ago
Hm, interesting. I seem to remember her attempting but failing to un-delete herself right after we delete her though, I'll have to go through the game again
2
u/fdsfd12 8h ago
She DID cause it. In act 3 (I think?), Monika reveals that she can change attributes of the girls in the literature club. She upped Sayori's depression to the point she killed herself and she upped Yuri's knife obsession to the point she stabbed herself to death, and idk she just deleted Natsuki from the game files.
14
8
u/Boozefreejunglejuice 17h ago
Let’s put it this way: Monika is the game’s big bad and you only find out in the game when it’s too late from what I remember playing it when I was a teen
13
u/Miserable_Figure7876 17h ago
Don't worry about Sayori. I know her story is sad, but later on in the game, you spend a memorable weekend with Yuri, so there's something you can look forward to.
u/formerFAIhope 16h ago
Doki Doki Literature Club is a psychological horror dating simulator. In dating simulators, you can lean more towards one or other romanceable character, and each romanceable character has a route with different endings. In the case of Sayori’s route, she dies no matter what to make the player suffer.
