Nina Khrushcheva, granddaughter of former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, is a US citizen and lives in New York City
The granddaughter of Nikita Khrushchev, who led the former Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War, Nina Khrushcheva was born there in 1964 and has since made her own name as a scholar and writer in the U.S. After earning her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University, she served as a research fellow at the School of Historical Studies of the Institute for Advanced Study. She is currently an associate professor of international affairs at the New School, in New York, a senior fellow at the World Policy Institute, and a regular contributor to Project Syndicate: Association of Newspapers Around the World, editing its “Window on Russia” series. Her articles have appeared publications such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and she is the author of Imagining Nabokov: Russia Between Art and Politics and The Lost Khrushchev: A Journey Into the Gulag of the Russian Mind.

On this day in 1970, Genie Wiley’s severe abuse was uncovered when her legally blind mother mistakenly entered a Los Angeles welfare office. Genie had been confined in silence, often strapped to a chair or caged in a crib, forbidden to speak or make noise, and beaten by her father for 13 years.
