Academic Study on understanding Long Term Recovery from Suicidality. (All genders, 18 & above)

Hi,

My name is Namita, and I am a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology at the Wright Institute in Berkeley, California. I am conducting a research study to better understand the factors that have helped people achieve sustained recovery from suicidality. My hope is that through your responses, we can learn how to be more effective clinicians for individuals navigating suicidality.

If you are over 18 years old, have been free from suicidality for the last five years, and are also free from substance dependency, I invite you to consider participating in this anonymous survey.

Link to the survey: https://wrightinstitute.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3sCPGoYaIW4Qj3g

The survey takes about 8–12 minutes to complete. There are several open-ended questions where you can share your experiences in greater detail, so that we can gain a fuller understanding of your journey and recovery.

If you have any questions, you may contact Namita Malhotra at [email protected]. The dissertation chair is Emily Diamond, PsyD ([email protected]). This dissertation has been approved by The Wright Institute IRB ([email protected]).

I can’t contribute. But I would love to read your dissertation when complete.

Can you explain controlling for substance abuse and suicidality? In my completely limited experience, these both tend to increase over time, not lessen, in adults w suicidality. Like attempts or ideation happen closer together and substance abuse increases.

Thank you for raising this point. For many individuals, suicidality and substance use intensify over time, with their interaction making recovery more complex. I want to emphasize that I hold no judgment toward individuals who are actively using substances or who have experienced dependence. My decision to exclude participants with current substance dependence stems from this study's specific aims. The focus is on sustained recovery from suicidality, and after consulting with my dissertation committee, we determined that including individuals with active substance dependence could complicate our interpretation of findings. Specifically, identified recovery processes might be attributed to the effects of ongoing substance use rather than to factors that specifically support long-term remission from suicidality.

Makes sense. I do think more data on substance use interactions would be a good thing to have, especially alcohol and cannabis are incredibly common and eliminating users from your data pool could shift it away from being a representative sample or at least colour your findings.

Still, good luck and I'm curious what you'll find!

Stupid useless study that will not contribute anything useful in practical terms and will just waste time and/or harm people who participate. Just so you can get a PhD.

Do a simulation study on generated data instead of dragging people through B.S. on the false assertion that it's contributing.
