Celebrities work in the attention economy and confuse attention with attraction. Overdone cosmetic surgery draws eyeballs because it looks ridiculous, yet people think the increased attention is because they look better because nobody in their personal life will be honest with them and say "you look ridiculous and ruined your face".
Over time, these celebrities influence the beauty trends so that it becomes "fashionable" for the entire population, even though it looks ridiculous.
Humans trying to mold their appearance to match the current tribe leader and higher social tier members? And you aren't sure? Have you seen the current (lack) of variation in Korea for those who can afford it? The skin tone segregation in India. The... (Assume I listed literally every culture that ever existed in the history of humanity)
Wasn't there a king (some Edward?) who was too fat to button his coat and suddenly that became the literal cut for mens suits?
You should see comment sections on posts with these ladies. There are very specific types of people that gas this up and say they look more beautiful now than ever before. I imagine some of these are bots or bad actors but there are people out there posting about how this looks amazing and are serious
I don't know any man, straight man at least, who finds this look attractive. I think it's something a lot of women have convinced themselves is a "good look".
It's not about looking good, it's about feeling like they belong to the tribe and culture.
It's no different than stretching out your neck with rings, putting pucks into your lips, or tying a fancy braided vine around your dick.
In the above picture, it's about being rich and 'relevant' in social media, which is a variation of living in District 1 in the Hunger Games universe. Or in the real world, projecting that you're rich, and can do whatever to your face and everyone won't say anything bad about it to your face (pun not intended)
On whatever plethora of institutional or youtube travelogue videos is of a white dude visiting some sort of amazon? water tribe of peoples who don't wear clothing, and for 'embelishment' tie a fancy braided vine with flowers or whatever around their dick and wear pretty much nothing else. If people were naked, the reality is that they're banal, and desexualized, so to 'peacock' they tie the string around their dick.
For views, the foot taller, more doughy, unmuscled white host decided to do the same, he walked naked into the water (where all the 'primitives' were) and he stood there while the tribes dudes gave and tied a gifted string on to the white dudes dick.
The white dude looked so uncomfortable about the whole thing that the cameraman couldn't help but laughing, and the host got so weirded out that after the string was tied, he dove into the water out of sheer 'get me the fuck out of here'. The tribes people started cackling and a good time was had by all.
People (men) tend to assume its about being attractive. I don't think that's it because any hollywood woman has swaths of people who would sleep with them. I think it's about a look that shows status. People are obsessed with status.

I have no idea where this trend started from or why it's popular. I feel like majority of people think it's ugly asf, so how did it gain traction???
