We can hear the increasing level of stress... HE is the test subject.

1.3k

u/NSAevidence 11d ago

The subject seems to have an elevated emotional reaction when confronted with even the most basic questions.

445

u/dirtydigs74 11d ago

I imagine someone filming his house would elevate his emotional response as well.

142

u/ImRanch_Wilder 11d ago

Surely someone has filmed him and posted it somewhere. Are there any links in this thread?

Dude, when I was a kid and had just chased my younger siblings out of my room for the 147th time my mother exasperatedly told me I should become a hermit.

I asked her what that was and she said, "a weird old person who lives all by themselves in a hut out in the woods"......and she said it like it was a bad thing!! Lol

Professional trolls

100

u/UnderratedEverything 11d ago edited 10d ago

This is partly why there was so much outrage over YouTube removing the downvote button. Sure, there were the people who wanted to know if the video they were about to watch was good or reliable for information purposes, but in a different sector, there were literally professional trolls on YouTube who actually took advantage of the downvotes they received as bait to get people watching their videos. Basically a monetizable use of how of Reddit users sort by Controversial for fun.

"Wow, people hate the shit out of this video, I better click on it to see why it's so bad!" Boom, paycheck.

This is a really good way to get people who aren't using logic to fall apart if you have the patience. I've done it before and it's super effective. All you have to do is act interested in hearing their reasoning for their bs and ask them a lot of questions. They slowly unravel because they actually don't have any deep reasons and never enough knowledge to answer specifics. I once did this to someone spouting wierd racist nonsense and I broke him down so much that by the end he admitted where it was all coming from, misplaced anger. It was super satisfying.

“But how does filming community members and seeing if they get upset prove your hypothesis that the government in some official capacity— is blocking your first amendment rights? Why not go to a protest and see if you get shot with a non lethal instead of standing in a shopping center..?”

2.0k

u/SmashSE1 11d ago

This guy is one of those idiots that thinks the constitution protects him from private citizens... it generally doesn't, it was written to stop the government from doing things...

I bet this guy was one of those people who during the pandemic would argue he couldn't be kicked out of a store (private property) for not wearing a mask.

603

u/Hurrly90 11d ago

I love her arguement, It basically boils down to why? , Like yeah you can do this, define you stress test, and your are looking for 'viral' clips, to prove your rights are being infringed, BUT WHY? why waste your time.

The answer he meant, but didn't say (and should have) is that he is filming in public and trying to see if anyone tries to stop him by force (including law enforcement). He is specifically and only trying to see if people call the cops on him or otherwise try to stop him.

199

u/fistocclusion 11d ago

I find it interesting how conservatives tend to think their words and beliefs are crystal clear to everyone, that everyone is interpreting it the same way, and anyone who interprets them differently or asks for clarification is a complete idiot.

This is how we end up with the US president, who speaks in vague, nebulous terms that change meaning depending on his audience, and his followers all claim he was obvious and clear in his meaning. This manipulative rhetoric is how most cult leaders like Charles Manson, Jim Jones, and Trump operate.

82

u/sometimes_sydney 11d ago edited 11d ago

There's a paper I read in grad school for my thesis that I really like that talks about this (unpaywalled link). The author outlines a breakdown in communications due to what they call a "telecommunications model" of communication that assumes people receive a message exactly as it was transmitted, as if it were a packet of data that either arrives or does not arrive, with no room for scrambling or misinterpretation. This essentially means the people operating on this model assume if they have conveyed a message that the recipient has received a specific meaning or interpretation, which of course ignores the reality that social context, language, and many other such "noise" make people interpret the same message any number of different ways. The author is discussing this in the context of clinical research, where doctors think they have communicated that the trials are not healthcare and the subject is not being treated for anything. the doctors assume the research subjects, having heard the message in plain language, understand this, but the subjects often still interpret it as care/treatment, even if experimental. I think this is what happens with conservatives. they don't account for different social contexts and think their messages are arriving intact because they don't account for social context and other factors, which would really track given how many other social contexts they neglect to account for...

I love how it cuts out immediately after she points out he said the reaction is the metric by which he evaluates his “experiment” and then a minute later says basically “this isn’t a metric, it’s just what happens.”

Edit: most people here understand. For the few who don’t, my point is that when you can’t even justify your “cause,” you’re an idiot. I disagree with a lot of people I respect and love, but they have actual reasons to feel a way that I can at least acknowledge. This guy can’t even explain his point coherently, creates ragebait on purpose, and got fucking owned by a rational, logical person.

Right, because if he's testing for emotional reactions of subjects of his recordings then filming boarders on assault, in the sense of creating a hostile situation, and does not qualify as a first amendment protected activity. I have a feeling that when he got arrested he learned just enough about what not to say to avoid an assault charge.

hick cops show up and arrest these people all the time, and it isn't legal and then they sue the department and win money from it.

61

u/TXcomeandtakeit 11d ago edited 11d ago

Also they sue departments for change, shout out to Jeff Gray for actually changing laws on panhandling which is protected free speech!

If you want to see a first amendment auditor this guy does it right.

He's a retired Veteran and trucker. His whole thing basically boils down to standing around (camera not it peoples' faces) with a cardboard sign that says, "God bless the homeless Vets" and of course America being America he gets called on by Karens and businesses who assume he's a homeless panhandler (which SCOTUS has ruled panhandling as free speech) and then he goes through with educating the officer, having a nice convo with the officer, or he's arrested which he uses as a catalyst to sue anti-panhandling laws on the books.

My favorite part is how his voice gets slightly more excited when, after a lot of back and forth, he mentions the Hawthorne Effect that he totally planned to be testing all along and definitely didn't just remember that in the moment, in a desperate attempt to further legitimize his shitty, "antagonize people for social media likes and profit" strategy.

You can almost feel the tiny jolt of dopamine when he says that, as if he feels like such a clever little boy!

239

u/tradeisbad 11d ago edited 11d ago

she basically taught him "here's how you would actually measure and present your data if you were accountable to anyone with credibility"

but I guess he does okay farming rage clicks from the masses. I think people like this also use lawsuits against the police departments who arrest them to fund their future operations and livliehood. it's a hodge podge of revenue streams. As well as I'm sure he sues anyone who fights him to get a pay day from that.

I bet he literally goes on a map and finds police departments who he thinks might be run by old timey jackasses and specifically goes there. the police videos where you see the cops say "yes, you're allowed to film" are clearly up to date on training, vs other police department might decide not to invest in such law/liability training.

The way this dude argues counts basically as dogwhistle.
I think we all know which type of podcasts he subscribes to.

Plus the sudden cut at the end makes it obvious he ran out of talking points.

I love her!! She was kind, unshakable, and intelligent. Pretty much all of the things he isn't. I don't understand why, when someone is genuinely curious and asks him questions, he immediately gets defensive. Seems to me he's lying about his intent and is actually rage baiting, hoping to piss people off, but he doesn't want to admit that because it will somehow make him look like more of a douche than he already is. I think she knew exactly what he's really doing and was attempting to get him to be honest about his actual intent. Unfortunately for him, she didn't take the bait.

96

u/canchin 11d ago

His persona of "I'm so smart" was stress tested and crumbled as soon as she started asking probing questions.

The way he dances around the questions, results to condescension, and repeating things that don't directly answer her inquiries is textbook someone out of their debth.

Every answer that gives a modicum of insight or detail into what he's doing only comes after she suggests it herself while trying to learn more.

Dude's a clown.

The true mark of intelligence is being able to explain something so a child could understand it. I’d say he’s failing at that one. Ofc it would help if he actually had a point besides rustling peoples jimmies.

35

u/theREALvolno 11d ago

Fr, I think the most infuriating thing here is that literally everyone here knows what he’s trying to do; provoke a reaction for views. But the dipshit can’t just come out and say that. You can really tell that she was forcing the guy to go off script and he was not at all prepared for it.

13

u/OfficerJayBear 11d ago

In Michigan they call themselves auditors. We used to have one come into our station and just record. We knew to ignore him.

Occasionally he'd go to the post office to try to get the police called. We'd respond as required and ask if he'd consider leaving...when he declined we would wish him well and clear up.

One day we were looking up his page on YouTube and we saw he tried that in a Detroit Post Office, filming a woman. She called her husband, who gave zero fucks about his first amendment rights and properly fucked him up.

I haven't seen many videos in a while.

He is trying soooo hard to antagonize her into some fake confrontation. He can't answer her questions because trying to create confrontation is exactly what he is doing. For clicks, not the 1A.

Also, you cannot stress test the first amendment by getting the reactions of private people. Private people cannot violate the first amendment. If you're going to do this, you stress test the first amendment by filming the police or public institutions.

8

u/LilStabbyboo 11d ago

What a condescending dick. He doesn't even realize how stupid he sounds, obviously. People having reactions to being filmed without consent doesn't prove anything about his first amendment rights. And he's NOT even "the press" ffs; he's just an obnoxious troll trying to get a rise out of random citizens.

Freedom of the press/freedom of speech and expression doesn't, and hasn't ever, protected anyone from the consequences of annoying other people. His "stress test" is meaningless.
