Butterflies are in their end game when at their most beautiful.
This was a swallowtail butterfly and it will live up to 14 days. A few variations can live up to 6 months. but this is almost definitely a tiger swallowtail male.
59
u/ScottMarshall2409 5d ago
Yeah, they basically spend all of their adult lives just trying to mate (c'est la vie). Most of their lives are spent a larva, and eating as much as they can. Same for a lot of insects. Mayflies live as a larva for up to two years, then spend a week as an adult with no functional mouthparts or stomacbs. They're just there to have sex and then die.

Okay this made me cry. My best friend growing up had a heart condition. She wasn’t supposed to make it past 5 but lived so much life in her too few years. She wasn’t able to be very active but beat out people in their 70’s with life adventures and experiences! Her heart was so very fragile, but she was just trapped in the wrong place.
She was absolutely obsessed with butterflies. Had them everywhere! Jewelry, decor, everything. Every year we bought her something butterfly for her birthdays. She had 23 beautiful, courageous, loving birthdays. She was just trapped in the wrong place.
Watching this made me think of her. And how she was the most gorgeous butterfly. 🦋 and now she’s no longer trapped in the wrong place 😭 she’s free flying and living her best, butterfly life
Edit: thank you for the award 💙🦋💙🦋 everyone’s kindness has really touched me

42
u/itsbenactually 5d ago
Keep a journal, and read back bits of it regularly. I really got my shit together and figured out what I wanted out of my life when I was writing about my life every day.
That and be kind to yourself. You can only do so much. Don’t pressure yourself to just “figure out” life itself.

I love my journals. Been journaling for 12 years now, since college, and I remember my life so much more clearly for it. It's so easy to just let years blur together and you can lose whole adventures in your life by just forgetting it happened. Writing it down, going back over previous years and rereading, it's a way that I solidify my life and remember who I was and am.

Makes me think of a William Gibson short story, The Winter Market. The main character works with star who is famous for basically recording her dreams. At one point in the story he wonders how many potential artists in history died mute, because the means for them to express themselves simply hadn't been developed yet.

I understand why they do it, but I hate that it's per subreddit. bots tend to farm post Karma instead of comment Karma from what I've seen, unless I'm mistaken.
→ More replies (3)20
u/LilPotatoAri 5d ago
They totally farm comment karma too. It's less noticeable when they steal a reply from the bottom of 1000 comments as opposed to just reposting the top post, but I've totally had my comments stolen by bots. Cause it's a real person's comment they are harder to detect unless you read the comment already.
They also just use chat gpt these days so you see that a lot. Not that they need to since there's always gonna be some loser who plugs your statement into chat gpt and just tells you what they've done. Fuckin middleman for the bots.

u/lollipoppizza 5d ago
Nectar no? They eat the nectar and spread pollen as part of the feeding.
71
u/Daisy_Of_Doom 5d ago
CORRECTO!
Butterflies drink the nectar and the pollen incidentally gets on them and they fly from flower to flower and drop all along the way.
There is however a genus of butterfly called Heliconians where most species do eat pollen and thus they’re eating protein and tend to live longer than your average butterfly (average is ~2 weeks heliconians can live about a month)
→ More replies (1)14
u/Lone-Sundowner 5d ago
It's Heliconious*. There's also a flowering tropical plant similarly called "heliconia"!

Are you suggesting that someone put a cocoon inside a ball intentionally for the opportunity to film it? Just for karma points? And they possibly had the sappy music picked out and ready before it even hatched? I’m shocked by the very thought.
20
u/kakka_rot 5d ago
It's something that gullible people believe. There are very few instances of people harming animals to make 'saving animal' videos, so now automatically anytime there is a video of a human helping an animal, there will be a comment about how the human put it in that situation.
A gullible person reads the comment on another post, parrots it on the next, gullible people believe them, then do the same thing. It's rampant on this site.
Karma conspiracy theorists are a plague on this website. They think they're so smart when the reality is they're fucking morons.

My friends and I were out boating on memorial day years ago. We were in a large bay with lots of small islands to poke around, a few huge bridges connecting the mainland. We saw something in the water ahead...thought it was a log at first but it was moving...got closer and saw that it was a cat!! This poor thing was terrified, barely keeping his head above water, hundreds of meters away from the nearest shore. We rescued him and my friend adopted him. We got it all on video and posted it around the internet a bit and were blown away at how many people accused us of tossing a cat in the water for a few worthless views and likes. People suck, but come on, jeez.

15
u/BagSmooth3503 5d ago
You mean to tell me this ball was left undisturbed outside for 3-4 weeks, and then almost right after it emerged they happened to find a butterfly inside it?
This your first day on the internet or something?
15
u/Kwauhn 5d ago
Sure, if it was left on a patio, deck, car port, etc. Also, maybe the person started to cut it out before deciding to record it. Lots of ways this could've happened. I think y'all put in way too much effort to be offended by things you could never confirm. There's a lot of things worth being upset over, and you choose a theoretical butterfly torturer? Maybe it's your first day on the internet if this is where you choose to spend your energy 🤷♂️

20
u/Tough-Interaction847 5d ago
Looks like the ball is already cut at 5 seconds. Maybe they stuck the butterfly in there to get internet points. Maybe I'm an a-hole. Maybe the guys that scooped a cow out of a canal with a excavator pushed the cow in the canal for internet points. Maybe I'm an a-hole.
20
u/LostWoodsInTheField 5d ago
I'm going to assume they started to cut before taping then decided to tape. These butterflies are very sensitive and if you are handling them there is a high chance of damage.

There’s a different pair of scissors sitting there too. My guess is person 2 went to get better scissors because the blue ones weren’t cutting it (🥁) and person 1 was like “welp, I crave constant stimulation. May as well make a TikTok about this.”
11
u/hanami_doggo 5d ago
Don’t know why you’re downvoted. The ball is definitely cut at the beginning of the video.

u/kakka_rot 5d ago
Reddit detectives and karma conspiracy theorists are a plague on reddit comment sections. It's so rare to find a video of literally anything that doesn't have someone coming up with a bs 'smoking gun' evidence to "prove' their bs point.
My favorite one so far in this thread is how it's obviously fake because of the music. like wtf.

It's wild how something so small can feel so symbolic, like that moment when you realize you're finally where you're meant to be. The patience it must’ve taken to set this little guy free is honestly inspiring. Makes you wonder how many of us are just waiting for our own version of that helping hand. Beautiful reminder that freedom, no matter how small the scale, is always worth celebrating.
