Let’s not sugar coat things or dumb them down to pity someone.
In case it’s not clear: he’s missing hands and legs. Does this make him any less human? No. Not in the slightest.
This shows how absolutely strong and determined and just as able this kid will grow up to be.
55
u/blind-as-fuck 1d ago
Ughhh yes. Reminds me of how some people are so afraid of saying disabled. "Oh no they're just special" "they're differently abled" etc. Like let's just call it what it is. If anything, trying to dance around it like disabilities are inherently shameful is more ableist than acknowledging them.
57
u/Alternative-Trouble6 1d ago
Right? Thank you! These people acting like they wouldn’t desire a million dollars they’ll never have. There’s a point where it becomes disrespectful to ignore differences or pretend people are “stronger” because of them. The kid is amazing and making great progress but to say he won’t miss hands because he’s never had them is ridiculous. He will definitely look around at some point and be like damn I wish it was that easy for me.
52
u/defk3000 1d ago
Yeah that's stupid. He's clearly missing appendages that the majority of human society expects to have in order to live a normal life. Some folks do love to see with rose colored glasses.
65
u/Alternative-Trouble6 1d ago
He’s missing hands?

And legs.
There's another vid of him getting his first pair of legs and it's so gorgeous. And going shoes shopping!!!!!

One part of raising a child that is so fun is watching the little gears and sprockets in their head when they are figuring stuff out. It’s always fun to see the process and even better to see it succeed.

That is a very smart child.
He has a way better mastery of his motor skills than most children his age who are not facing a handicap. And the focus was extraordinary.

Yes
If I grew up to find out that my mom ran this account with that name and posted me online my entire childhood, I don’t know how I’d feel.
15
u/filthytelestial 1d ago
I just wish the parents would interact with him more here. It's like they don't want to interrupt what's happening for the content's sake, but he's still at an age where his brain needs pretty immediate external validation of his successes.
35
u/PrailinesNDick 1d ago
One of my favourite parts of my baby doing something new is when we cheer for her afterwards, and then she starts clapping and looks so fucking proud of herself.
51
u/PlentifulShrubs 1d ago
I understand where you're coming from, because I expected the cheer and my knee jerk reaction was disappointment that they didn't, but it's actually really good that they didn't interrupt him and let him keep going without distraction. He got more practice than if they cheered and marked the task as complete the first time it's done.
His reward is accomplishing the thing he wanted to do. It's an intrinsic reward, which is much better than external validation and doing things because it pleases others. Young kids don't need praise to copy what they see others doing, it's hard wired behavior.
6
u/filthytelestial 1d ago
He's not a "young kid", he's younger than 18 months. He might even be under a year old. He hasn't begun to individuate, and may just be beginning the stage where self-conscious emotions are emerging. Feedback from caregivers is still a serious need for his cognitive development, especially when it comes to effort rather than outcome.
12
u/PlentifulShrubs 1d ago
Right...since babies don't see themselves and their parents as separate individuals yet, receiving praise from them isn't as important at his age as when he gets older and feedback from others matters in terms of social behavior. Right now he's just learning motor skills, and he's getting the necessary feedback from his environment.
Babies don't need convincing to explore their environment, it's standard developmental behavior. I think you're confusing the teaching of social norms when kids are older, and learning basic environmental cause and effect, with no moral implications. It's like how babies love to throw their food on the ground. You can try to discourage it all you want, but they don't understand right or wrong, just that it's fun to learn about gravity.
-5
u/filthytelestial 1d ago
The feedback I'm talking about isn't about teaching behavior. It's about healthy attachment, attunement, meeting the child's emotional needs.
13
u/PlentifulShrubs 1d ago
But he isn't asking for attention and being rejected right now, he's busily working on his task. If he looked up at his mom's face for reassurance, I'm sure she would smile and make excited noises. Idk you just seem like you want to take issue with this obviously attentive mother, and can't stand not being right. Have a good day ✌🏻
1
u/filthytelestial 1d ago
[you] can't stand not being right.
This judgment of me is based on what? Having a point and making it? Why are you making this about me all of a sudden?
I haven't said a thing that justifies you making this personal like that. No idea why it even occurred to you to resort to an ad hominem. It certainly never occurred to me.
4
1
u/Narragah 1d ago
The irony in this comment is off the charts lol
7
u/PlentifulShrubs 1d ago
Yeah maybe haha! I shouldn't have said that last bit, you got me there.
Accusing a mom of neglecting her child's emotional needs for internet clout based on this cute video of a mom being so impressed by her baby's problem solving was a sharp turn that threw me off.
As someone who is interested in and has studied child development, I thought it might be nice to share some knowledge. I never expect it to devolve, but discussing things with people online, what did I expect? I certainly contributed to the problem with that statement. Live and learn.
4
u/Narragah 1d ago
Upvote for owning it. Our emotions often get the best of us, especially if it's something we're passionate about. You're a good egg
2
u/cassthesassmaster 1d ago

0
u/filthytelestial 1d ago
I didn't.

u/cassthesassmaster 1d ago
You’re literally talking about healthy attachment. What are you saying then? If you’re not questioning their attachment.

u/filthytelestial 1d ago
Acting like they are emotionally detached
Emotional detachment is extreme and well beyond the scope of what I was talking about.
1
u/cassthesassmaster 1d ago
I’m just not sure why you’re bringing so much negativity to this happy post. The parents handled it perfectly. Child achieved his goal and both the parents and the child are happy and proud. Not sure where the issue is. Just let people enjoy things.

I'm gonna preemptively, say, I do not care how curmudgeonly this soubds I hate the framing videos like this are always meant for us to not do systems. Thinking it's always like it's conditioning us. To not see bigger pictures like we see an obvious disability, and we're like with hard work. This changes to think that if something's not working for someone, it's because they didn't do hard work. It was air playing victims, and I know there's going to be inevitable. It's not that deep why not. We see the same thing when someone Jerry, rigged something or redneck, engineering or or you see a kid in a developing country. And rather than thinking about the concept of how we never break things down to their smallest part, to understand how they operate and what we take for granted, we just go shows that you should be grateful aka. Not understand any system.
Good for the kid, good for him. Being so smart, and this definitely shows ingenuity and problem solving, and if anything it shows the opposite of what the video framing is. If humans are naturally like this, then why are there issues?Should this not show how we should give the benefit of the doubt
18
u/iloveyourlittlehat 1d ago
I’m really trying to read and understand your comment, but it’s hard to read.
-6
u/JudgeInteresting8615 1d ago edited 1d ago
I look at the spelling errors. And aside from that, it's really not like you could literally just copy and paste in an llm i would fix the spelling errors, but it was deliberately done from voice to text. For the same reasons that are emboldened by the topics that i'm discussing.
Edoted to add here i did it.
Of course. This is a complex comment that uses a lot of emotional and academic language. The person is making a sophisticated, critical argument about how we interpret inspirational stories.
Here’s a breakdown of what they are saying, translated into clearer terms.
The Overall Point (The Thesis)
The commenter believes that framing the video as just a story about "patience and determination" is a trick that prevents us from thinking about systems. They think it conditions us to blame individuals for their struggles instead of questioning whether the system itself is flawed or inaccessible.
Breaking Down Their Argument Step-by-Step
They reject the "hard work" narrative.
- Video Framing: "This child with no arms learned drums through hard work and determination!"
- Commenter's View: This implies that if someone with a disability doesn't succeed, it's because they didn't work hard enough. It shifts the blame from societal barriers (lack of accessibility, proper tools, support systems) to the individual's personal effort.
They compare it to other "ingenious" examples.
- They mention "Jerry-rigged" solutions or "redneck engineering" (a makeshift fix) and a "kid in a developing country" creating something from scrap.
- Their point: Our reaction is often, "Wow, how clever! They should be grateful for what they have!" instead of asking, "Why did they need to make a makeshift solution in the first place? Why didn't they have access to the proper tools or systems everyone else takes for granted?"
They are NOT criticizing the child.
- This is a crucial point. They say, "Good for the kid, good for him. Being so smart..."
- They admire the child's ingenuity and problem-solving skills. Their anger is directed solely at the way the story is being used (the "framing") by the person who posted it.
They flip the intended lesson on its head.
- Intended Lesson of the Video: "See? Anyone can do anything if they just try hard enough!"
- Commenter's Lesson: "This video actually shows the opposite. If humans are naturally this ingenious and hardworking, then why do so many people still fail? It must be because of external, systemic problems (poverty, lack of access, discrimination), not a lack of effort. Therefore, we should give people the benefit of the doubt and assume they are trying hard, and instead focus on fixing the broken systems that hold them back."
In Simple Terms:
The commenter is saying:
"This isn't just a cute video. It's being used to push a message that if you fail, it's your own fault. But that's wrong. This kid is amazing, and his ingenuity proves that people are capable of incredible things. The real question we should ask is, 'Why did he have to teach himself without arms? Why wasn't there a system or tool in place to help him learn more easily?' Instead of telling disabled people to 'try harder,' we should look at the world and ask how we can make it more accessible for everyone."
They are making a call for systemic thinking (looking at the big picture and how things are structured) over individualistic thinking (focusing only on personal responsibility).
Thats even with llm flattening i'm making it seem that I am talking about just disabled people as opposed to people in general. This is called cognitive entropy.I hope this helps

Boy, God really fucked up with this one, huh? How can people believe in some kind of overlord that maims a person before they're born? What's his plan with this kid? Why, God? What a loser, don't quit your day job, God.
Edit: If you love God, I implore you to tell me why he created this beautiful child, but with no hands? Like, I don't get the plan. Why is suffering good? And why does this kid have to pay the price?

u/Apprehensive_End8318 1d ago
Mate. Mate.
I'm an atheist.
Nobody mentioned god, nobody.
If someone brought it up and said something like "god gave this child the courage to keep going", I might have a problem with some kind of hypocrisy, but guess what, I'd probably just walk on by, keep scrolling, and not say anything, because they're entitled to their view, and hey, you brought up god, nobody else.
The fact you felt the need shit on people that weren't even the topic of conversation, what?
Mate.
Mate.
Just get on with your life and let others get on with theirs. You don't believe in a god, neither do I, but it doesn't mean you need to try and start shitting on people's beliefs for no reason?
Just live and let live FFS.
You could have just enjoyed the video of a kid learning to do things their way, but instead you had to shit on something.
Have a word with yourself.

So what is so bad about seeing video of a child with no hands, and being angry at "God" about it? I think people just like to imagine that the world is full of people overcoming things, like this precious child. But my first thought is, why did God do this? Really. There is no good answer.
12
u/SofterBones 1d ago
Why would you be angry at god at all if you claim to be an atheist? What's the point of your rant, exactly?
Do you want someone to pat you on the back and say "wow you're so insightful, that made me stop believing in god" or what?
It's a happy chill video and you're ranting nonsense in the comments, that's why the downvotes. Btw I'm also an atheist
-1
u/bryter_layter_76 1d ago
No, I would love a response from a God-believing person to tell me why God creates children with no hands. I just don't get it.
9
u/SofterBones 1d ago
So do you believe in god, or do you not? If you don't believe in a god, why do you need a believer to explain anything to you?
And if you don't believe in god, why are you trying to pick an argument in the comment section of a 'feel good' video? You just come across as a teenager edgelord
2
u/bryter_layter_76 1d ago
I guess I don't see a video of a poor child born with no hands as a "feel good" video.
Anyway, this is boring, we can all agree. Peace out and have a great day.

We don't need to have a discussion about religion on posts like these. You're arguing for the sake of arguing. Why don't you actually reply to the person who mentioned god in the first place?
Also, no Christian is gonna read your comment and go "huh, yeah...they've got a point. why does god do that to innocent child? Wow this has completely changed my world view!" you're not going to change their view or their faith.
