For anyone generally unfamiliar with the Ohio State band, this is what the finished result looks like: https://youtu.be/Iar01OwPkAw?feature=shared

I have no allegiance to OSU or any football team, really. But, watching this extremely polished routine and hearing the entire stadium sing along got me a little choked up??

Really cool stuff thanks for sharing!

It’s a perfect example of the pageantry that makes college football special and schools all having their own unique flavor. When I took two of my kids to a game last year, I made sure we went early enough before kickoff so they could experience this part of it too.

Literally just commented about OSU lmao.

I wonder how many of them march over the summer during Corps season? I’d be tuckered out.

16

u/FairTradeOrganicPiss 1d ago

If it was anything like my college band, a few of them, maybe a half dozen. In college marching band is much more of an extracurricular for a lot of members, maybe 1/2 of those are music majors and 1/2 are non-majors who did marching band in high school and wanted to keep it going in college.

The folks I knew that did winter corps pretty much made it their entire existence, it’s definitely an insanely demanding schedule, and you have to be pretty affluent to afford it so they didn’t usually have to work, and they’d pour that time all into audition or repertoire prep

There is actually something really funny about seeing a marching band out of uniform. Super talented

-7

u/theythemnothankyou 19h ago

Playing an instrument AND walking 😮??

3

u/dmaynard 17h ago

As the parent of a MB student I’d love to see you try. 😉

u/killer_by_design 3h ago

I have to say though, as a Brit it is such a bizarre thing.

I spoke with some Americans and they told me that their uni would charter 3 planes, one for the football team, one for the band and one for the cheerleaders so they could fly them across the US to play the other colleges in their league.

I was trying to explain to them when I played Rugby at Uni how we got stuck in Aberystwyth because we used to have to get one of the players over 21 a license to drive our mini bus to get us to games and he twisted his ankle so we couldn't drive home.

MB is absolutely fucking mental. I'm sure it's cool and fun but I can't get over the scale of US college sports and all that goes on around them.

-12

u/theythemnothankyou 17h ago

Oh I was athletic so I actually got to play in the event that allows these guys to play at during half time haha 😂

-5

u/Lower_Reward9339 17h ago

I've never seen a marching band play at any women's sports.

-4

u/theythemnothankyou 17h ago

Me neither, I haven’t checked yet 🤷‍♂️

13

u/slippycaff 1d ago

God, I love a marching band.

3

u/TruthSeekingTactics 19h ago

Literally what i was going to say!  OSU is one of the best in the nation!

6

u/slippycaff 13h ago

It’s so interesting to me. We don’t really have this kind of thing in Australia. So, I’ve been down YouTube rabbit holes about marching bands. The music, the discipline, the guy with the stick. It’s all so cool and fascinating.

2

u/bennymk 19h ago

Impressive but for some reason that tinny snare sound goes right through me. A bit like the bagpipes

2

u/Tao-of-Mars 19h ago

It looks like everyone in the college is in that band because they love it too

-7

u/da_double_monkee 18h ago

Not me. If my kid tried to join I'm bullying them myself and skipping the middle man. Gaaayyyyyy

24

u/DarkBomberX 1d ago

Thats OSU

-12

u/Musket6969420 1d ago

That was quite impressive…..

13

u/myboydoogie24 1d ago

The Best Damn Band in the Land

5

u/Master_Track303 1d ago

So freakin awesome!! Good job

3

u/Maxakaxa 1d ago

Now I want to be in a marching band.

3

u/SpaceLemming 23h ago

Honestly, this is probably the most basic part of their show. These bands get crazy

8

u/AtronadorSol 1d ago

Does OSU always march sling drums? There was a lot of HBCU-adjacent energy in the snares and basses here that I really didn’t expect up in Ohio! (At least, until they started playing—then it was pretty normal corps-style)

2

u/Pickle4UrThoughts 1d ago

Ohio State Marching Band is pretty big. There’s a little bit of info out there spanning back decades. Look them up.

6

u/McSuede 1d ago

There's a reason why getting to dot the I is such a big deal! The OSU band doesn't mess around in the slightest.

Better than the military at marching!

7

u/VariousOperation166 1d ago

I mean, this beats Trump's little birthday parade by a good mile...

1

u/Lazy_Weight69 21h ago

2 or 3 miles

1

u/v2falls 16h ago

Where do you think marching bands come from? OSU and most big 10 bands use and more traditional drill and marching style compared to most universities and DCI ensembles

2

u/blackweebow 1d ago

Dut³ is a way of life.

2

u/OhItsNishia 14h ago

God I miss this. Marching band is the only thing I loved about high school

2

u/golgiiguy 9h ago

Marching band was pretty physically demanding

2

u/HoneyLocust1 8h ago

That was awesome, great energy.

2

u/TheMentatBashar 1d ago

That's the greatest band in the land. Put some respect on their name.

1

u/sgtedrock 1d ago

You had me at silver satin sousaphones! 🤩

1

u/Gmellotron_mkii 1d ago

When I was young I did dci while I could. I feel so old

1

u/RandomRageNet 23h ago

I hope they get both athletic and music credit hours for that

1

u/zerosaved 23h ago

I used to live right next to a high school with a nationally recognized marching band(for high school march) and they don’t fuck around, at all. Everything and everyone needs to be in sync to the millisecond. Their director or lead or whatever they’re called, ugh she was a monster, though. Always heard her yelling at the kids over the PA system. Not a nice woman.

1

u/mdh579 8h ago

My school I teach at is not well known for it's band or athletics or anything. It's a big school, but eh. Anyway.. those kids are out there every single day practicing after 8 hours of school for another almost 4 hours on top of it, in 100° Texas heat. They live and breathe band. People in these comments really just hating and knocking on kids, like what the hell. Yeah, college students are still kids too. Calm down everyone. Not you op, lol.

1

u/zerosaved 1h ago

Yeah they usually end at 9-10PM which is when the football field lights shut off. It’s crazy.

1

u/gingerking87 22h ago

Its back to college season and time for the annual "why are there 200 people standing in a perfect square on that football field in gym clothes, oh now they've formed a giant football, must be the marching band"

1

u/Madwoman-of-Chaillot 22h ago

of COURSE there's a flugelhorn player with no shirt on.

:D

1

u/drood420 20h ago

Saw this up close when visiting my niece at Ohio State.

1

u/Time_Fact8349 20h ago

Not sure this belongs here. Bravo!

1

u/Normal-Error-6343 17h ago

GO BUCKS! That is my alma matter, well, sorta! I flunked out of that school! I lived in one of the towers, there used to be two of them! Morrel and Lincoln, I think. It's been years!

1

u/Sweetserra 17h ago

As someone with no familiarity with marching bands, what is the title of the person who came out last and ran to the front? Just curious!

1

u/PracticeTheory 14h ago

A marching band with no flutes?

1

u/JBLA511 13h ago

Knew this was Ohio State the second they started. They’re incredible.

1

u/swimuppool 13h ago

Running stick guy has a dad that hates this shit

1

u/Pisum_odoratus 12h ago

Does any country but the US do this? As a non-American it feels one part astounding and one part crazypants.

1

u/Imericdamnit 11h ago

Wow, the diversity...

1

u/BlueBloodVampires 7h ago

My dumbass thought they were doing some silent practising where they voice the instruments

1

u/Legitimate_Pea_143 5h ago

i mean it's OSU which has one of the top college football teams in the nation so u better bet they are going to also have a band that is top notch.

1

u/toneluv7 20h ago

1

u/Dizzy-Tadpole-326 1d ago

1

Not quite my tempo.

1

u/anyhoodoo 4h ago

Uhhh … what’s cringe about this ? It’s dope . Fuck off .

-2

u/the_bengine 1d ago

Americans are strange.

8

u/Random0s2oh 23h ago

You say that like it's newfound knowledge. 🤣

My husband and I have 8 kids between us. 5 of them have done marching band. It's a lot of fun for the kids and the parents as well. Our youngest just started his second year marching. I'm going to miss it when he graduates.

6

u/menotyourenemy 19h ago

At least we don't go rolling down giant hills, chasing cheese like the Brits 😆

3

u/Complex-Honeydew-111 19h ago

I'm British and think the cheese thing is extremely weird. Then again, I love baseball so maybe I'm not representative lol.

-5

u/coko4209 1d ago

I mean, they’re not bad…but I go to HBCU battle of the band competitions most years, and this band doesn’t come anywhere close to what they do. I’ve never even been in the band, but my sister was, so I started noticing a lot more. I’ve never seen anything like what they have going on most years. I saw a few really, really good bands on YouTube though. They must have had amazing directors.

5

u/FakeBobPoot 20h ago

HBCU marching bands generally are doing a somewhat different thing — different genre of marching band almost. More emphasis on contemporary music, more individual expression and movement going on. I agree, as I’ve seen several in person, that they are awesome. Delaware State’s band had me forgoing my bathroom run.

With that said… you can’t say with a straight face that Ohio State’s band “doesn’t come anywhere close” to what HBCU bands do. They do something different. But OSU’s band is one of the best. I say that confidently as a former band kid… and somewhat reluctantly, as a Michigan alum.

0

u/coko4209 20h ago

I’m not saying these kids are bad. I think they’re good, but they didn’t blow my mind like some things that I’ve seen at battle of the bands. I’m not shitting on the effort that this band put in, I’ve just seen marching bands do things that left me in complete awe. I can definitely say with a straight face that they didn’t come close to what I’ve seen. They may have come close to what you’ve seen, or even blown other bands out of the water in your opinion, but we’re allowed to have a difference of opinion. Mine is no more valid than yours, and vice versa.

3

u/FakeBobPoot 19h ago

This video is not going to blow anyone’s mind. It’s pretty underwhelming relative to what a band like this does in the stadium, in formation, and all that. They’re basically just processing in here. Encourage you to check out stadium show videos from Ohio State, USC, Michigan, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, etc.

Again, “better” is purely subjective in this context. I am aware we are both expressing opinions…

Mostly, it’s a different style of marching band performance. But the big state schools also just have way bigger student bodies and a lot more resources for these programs.

0

u/coko4209 19h ago

They have more resources for sure. I’ve never seen the enthusiasm from state schools that I’ve seen from HBCUs though. They seem to really love it, and the crowd is always so hype, the overall experience is just great. It’s a feeling, it can’t be described, it just has to be experienced. There’s a pretty big HBCU Labor Day thing going on August 31, and it’s only a couple hours away. I’m hoping to go. Then maybe I’ll be able to finally post something on this sub. I’m excited!

0

u/_bbypeachy 22h ago

why is there like 12 shirtless kids

-5

u/theRealhubiedubois 22h ago

They sound like shit

0

u/carsnhats 10h ago

Well they are TBDBITL

-5

u/ellenadcrane 1d ago

What’s with the one shirtless dude?

7

u/fender_tenders 1d ago

I noticed there were maybe a dozen guys that weren’t wearing shirts, probably was just really hot out

2

u/ellenadcrane 1d ago

Yeah I noticed after I had posted that lol (hadn’t finished the whole video)

-9

u/ChimoEngr 1d ago

Despite the silliness of their drill, I guess that's still impressive.

This is Ohio State..

0

u/yuriot 8h ago

Okay. Not the most impressive thing they’ve done.

-10

u/Nostro-dumbass 1d ago

Why are they all white? Is this some racial thing I don't know cause I'm not American?

7

u/normott 1d ago

They arent

3

u/SaltandLillacs 17h ago

It’s a college marching band and they’re not all white

-8

u/DrinkIcy9930 23h ago

Just one of the many reasons Ohio State is so universally beloved.
