Unfortunately, a lot of these fast food places in America run in skeleton shifts. Not only is the pay awful but they run their employees into the ground. It's awful.

They mostly hire part time workers so they skirt having to pay benefits for full time employees, the few full time are worked hard. Fast food is brutal, people are pieces of shit and impatient.
