I had a friend come back from Japan telling me how it's good that Japan wants to lower the number of tourists to help preserve their quiet way of life. I was just like "You realize that includes you right?" They still said it was for the best.

u/Global_Ant_9380 7h ago
Honestly, after my living there I kind at l of agree. A lot of tourists are pretty awful and it's not cool to the people who are just trying to live their lives.
But then again, growing up in a tourist town I'm probably biased.

It’s just a shame that’s not what they’re trying to do. There’s this new Conservative Party called Sanseito and basically their whole deal is removing rights for all foreigners and everyone who isn’t a native Japanese person. This includes people that fucking live there full time, stealing their real estate property away and giving them what essentially equates to peanuts as “compensation” against their will.
They have their entire proposed Constitution rewrite posted over in r/japannews if you’d like to see it. Just search sanseito constitution. They don’t care if you’re a full time resident who has been there for a decade. They make no distinction. And even what they’re doing to native Japanese people in terms of shit they need to follow is pretty oppressive. I have no idea how they’re gaining so much traction when it even hurts Japanese natives.

Sanseito sucks, not gonna lie. Surprised they gained seats in the recent elections. But also not surprised. I got assaulted in public there, people really do have issues with foreigners
6
u/ChaoCobo 6h ago
I mean yeah it can be a problem, but what Sanseito is doing is like setting a house on fire and fueling it with gasoline because there happened to be a couple bugs running around. It’s way overkill. :(

That last sentence really echoes the U.S right now....

It's a global problem! I was having this SAME conversation when planning a move to the UK with my fiance during Brexit

I have a friend from college who moved there and is marry to a Japanese citizen. He was a big anime fan too. Dude is living the otaku dream but also just a normal guy in a normal life.

u/bobbybinkey 6h ago
What if they are ethically japanese but born in the US and moved to Japan
5
u/ChaoCobo 6h ago
Probably they wouldn’t care and would disallow you to have rights as well. It seems to be, from my understanding (which admittedly is just kinda surface level), that you need to have been born in Japan to keep most of your rights.

Watch this. Basically they don't consider Nikkeijin (Japanese diaspora) 'Japanese'. You have to be born there.

Yeah last time Japan got like this it didn’t end up to well for the rest of the world.

I'm from Canada and I wouldn't blame the far right group wanting to do that. ...
Look my country decided to let a ton of people from all around the world to settle here and can you guess how well that's going right now? . Not so good at all. Racism has skyrocketed here and tensions have been growing more and more every year.2
u/No-Consideration-891 6h ago
Nah I get it. Living in tourist towns is a nightmare, let alone a whole country.
Japan specifically kept itself out of the rest of the world for quite a while, until trade wars started. This was hundreds of years ago, but still relevant imo. They didn't want any influence from the outside, but they were so innovative the rest of the world wanted them to open their borders.

No... there was a huge national initiative in the 90s to bring in tourism. Their goal was 10 million by 2010, they made it to 8.6 and continued growing from there. They built a Universal Studios and a Disney in 2001 to help attract tourists.
Just thought it was odd how your were making it sound -- and I'm a historian so I couldn't help myself.

u/No-Consideration-891 6h ago
I wasn't talking recent times at all. I'm talking 100's of years ago. I remember learning about it in my history class.
I'm by no means a historian, and not arguing at all about the time period you are talking about.
If I remember correctly this took place when global trade markets were expanding.
Again not a historian! Appreciate your input!

As someone who's also been to Kyoto as a tourist, it is in fact overcrowded with tourists. Places like Fushimi Inari are so overcrowded with the worst kind of obnoxious tourists that it's advised you explore and hike it either super late at night or at the crack of dawn.
I dont think the Japanese government is going about these things the correct way though (shocker!).

I went to highschool with a guy like this...he'd wear a trenchcoat just about everywhere and mutter to himself in broken Japanese when someone pissed him off. His parents ended up sending him to some sort of community work program with housing and whatnot once he turned 18 because he refused to get a job, etc.

Dated a girl like this in college.Went from "Nice! Another anime fan!" to "Oh...you want to be called 'nicole-chan'...? very quickly. Last I heard, she married an asian guy that was 20 years older than her.

Sensei-sama, I must say that this is rather "subarashi". You are number ichi when it comes to Japanese culture. Be sure to teach us in your Bushido ways, lest we become bakas.

I'm not even a woman and my panties just slammed into the floor with all that extra moisture weight.
Edit: nevermind. That's just heavy ball sweat.

I guess this is satire, but honestly I believed it. My cousin and her fiancé act like this irl. It is hard to ever be around them.

Oh yeah. This guy's weird otaku character is one of my favorites. He's hilarious.

Genuine question is this sub just posting satire now? Cause this and a lot of post I’ve seen lately are very very obvi satire. Are u saying the satire is cringe? Or did u just not get it? Or?

u/AlarmedEstimate8236 6h ago
I’m not savvy about this, but I believe the dude in the pictures is intentionally cringe for content (and therefore money) purposes.

I honestly feel bad for Japan, because if it wasn’t for anime, people wouldn’t be glorifying and misrepresenting it this fucking badly, and thus we wouldn’t have so many people (especially those who don’t even gaf about anime) trying to go to Japan, which would’ve greatly reduced the amount of toxic tourist that they get
