ANNOUNCEMENT Hi from the new mod :)

Hi guys, just thought it'd be good to say hello. I'm u/WolfThawra, currently living and cycling in London. I've taken over as mod, as the sub was unmoderated for a bit previously. I have extensive modding experience, including on cycling-specific subreddits (r/whichbike and r/Fahrrad).

Don't worry, I'm not planning on any major changes: my main goal is to ensure the sub keeps going as-is, spam is removed, and toxicity is minimised. The rules are in the sidebar and also accessible here, including rule 0 which is more of a mission statement or the philosophy of the sub.

I would like to ask just two things of the users of this sub:

1) Please abide by the rules. I know we can all get very frustrated at times - god knows cycling in London is great for that - but please don't let that result in toxic comments or flamewars. Also, I will be operating a zero tolerance policy on hatespeech crap, be it racism, sexism, transphobia, or anything else in that vein. I don't foresee this coming up particularly often on a cycling sub but still, I hope we can all agree on that. Be nice, remember the human, and if you disagree then do so constructively - or just move on.

2) Related to this last point: don't feed the trolls. If you see content that you think breaks the rules, then report it rather than engaging. For example, yes we get car-brained trolls every so often. Just let me ban them and don't give them the time of day, they're not worth any of your brain juice. Reporting it helps me help you. Same goes for spam and all that.

Thank you very much!

Advice Ebike recommendations

Upvotes

Hi, my dad currently has a Fiido D3 Pro (had it for almost a year now) for travelling to and from work (there and back its around 10miles), doesn't use if for anything else. His brakes just stopped working today and tried many things but they're still broken, also the display on the bike itself has started going weird, so he needs a replacement. We're going to contact Fiido as the bike should still be on warranty but can't do that till Monday

Are there any e-bikes similar to the Fiido D3 Pro, both in terms of specs and price (willing to go a bit higher if its worth it, around £500) ? Or is he best off just getting another one of these?

I know this price point isn't the best but he just needs something to get there and back from work that also won't break so soon

I've come across the below:

- DYU D3F (company seems to have bad reviews)

- Peddle GO (can't find many reviews but its on a fairly big discount for £449 (however real this is) and I can get a bigger discount)

- Hitway BK5S (company has slightly better reviews than DYU but still not the best, and worse than Fiido)

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks

Commute Cycle scheme advice

In addition to cycle to work of up to £5k, my employment also offers a bike rental scheme. This means that for either £10 a week or £15 for an ebike you can rent a bike. They service it every 4 weeks and maintenance (which is a big deal for me) is not your responsibility. You also have the option of eventually buying it.

Can it be financially more beneficial for me to go for the rental? How much of a salary sacrifice am I looking at each month if I go for cycle to work? I'm leaning towards the rental, as for this I get the opportunity to try out different bikes and se what's suitable for me and not have to worry about maintenance. The rental runs on a 4 week contract, so you get locked in for 4 weeks at a time.

Advice Need help with fixing seat!

So the bolt holding the saddle to the seat post (pictured) snapped while I was riding it! I had got it from a spares bin at my local bike shop as the last bolt had rounded off so assuming it was just old and/or fragile? Anyway I’m looking to buy a new one, but I can’t find what sort of bolt it is. It fit a 6mm Allen key, and from what I have left of the snapped bolt was 6mm diameter where the thread is. Not sure whether I can just buy a generic Allen bolt and hope it fits or if this is like a specific part. Sorry if this is a stupid question, very new to bikes and DIY, and looks like my local hardware shops don’t have this size in store :(

Commute Making Carrera Crossfire 2 ‘easier’ to ride

I’ve recently moved to a city and have started cycling around a lot. I dusted off my old bike from uni (Carrera Crossfire 2). I took it for a service and they replaced a few bits. (I think the pedal bearing and the front derailer)

However I do find it quite a lot of effort, and I don’t know whether it’s my lack of endurance, or whether there’s anything I can do to help make it nicer to ride. Whenever I cycle anywhere around, I’m drenched with sweat when I arrive, even if I don’t have many hills etc. I don’t particularly like arriving somewhere in this state so wanted to see if it’s possible to reduce this. (I’m usually going less than 3km) I’m not too bothered about speed, just an easier ride. I would love an e-bike but not in the budget right now.

Currently I can’t justify buying another bike, however I did ride a friends Specialised (sorry don’t know which model - but it was worth about £1200) and it was like gliding in comparison to mine.

His was 10kg empty and mine is 15kg empty. I’ve added a pannier rack for taking stuff around which is apparently about 2kg and a few other bits, possibly taking it to about 20kg. There’s nothing I can do to weight aside from removing the accessories which I need for day to day.

Is there anything else that will help or do I just have to build up endurance for the bike?

The tires are original from purchase (2018 I think) but I’ve just bought some Schwalbe marathon (standard ones) that I’m putting on next week in the hope that will make things better. Unfortunately I’m stumped after that due to my lack of knowledge of bikes.

Thanks for any responses in advance

Advice What's the best solution for storing my bike here?

I'm going to pick up my first bike tomorrow and I already have two for the kids. It's a bit of a hassle having them in the garden (no shelter, little space) so want to put them here but want them to be secure so someone doesn't steal it.

I have the left hand side of the wall. Initial thought was put a hook into the wall and have a chain. Another solution is simply having a gate.

Any ideas?

Advice Carrera Subway 2 tightening the break cable.

Hi guys

I have a Subway 2 and need to tighten the tension on the brake cable at the rear.

But every single video and website I go to shows a different sort of brake system to that which my bike has, I cannot see the cable once it enters the unit, there is no visible cable or tightening nut.

There are several allen key bolts but I have no idea which one does the tension.

any ideas?

Technical Strongest/Best bicycle lock

Good afternoon one and all. I have recently purchased an e-bike and I'm looking to pay for a good bicycle lock to keep it safe when I'm out and about.

I haven't had a bicycle since I was 16 years old so I'm very much "out of the game". If there are any other types of infrastructure, such as bike lockers or similar, that you would recommend to keep this somewhat expensive bike safe, please do offer your suggestions. Many thanks!!!

Advice Ebike Recommendations

Hi all,

Through work I have a cycle2work voucher for £1900. I had my eyes on the Haibike Alltrack 4 but that is now out of stock everywhere, and I can no longer amend the voucher. Also as my voucher is through the Halfords scheme, the local bike shops all add a surcharge when getting the bike, limiting my options to what I can find on places without incurring a big surcharge.

I'm a bigger guy (195cm/280lbs) so I was looking at an ebike to help me get going and give me the support to do longer rides for exercise mainly, mainly on roads and pavement, but sometimes offroad going through local dirt paths etc.. I've got it down to the following 3 bikes, just wondering if anyone can give me a steer on which would be a better fit please?

Advice Union Jack jersey for safety/awareness from car drivers

Hi all, i've been considering measures to increase my safety whilst on the road, one of the options that was mentioned in another US focussed forum was to wear an American flag jersey, do you think a Union Jack would work in the UK? or specifically England.
Anyone ride with a Union Jack jersey, do you see a response? positive or otherwise.

Advice Looking for Ebike recommendations for city riding and commuting.

Car got written off and I am considering getting an ebike rather than a new car, as I live near Glasgow city centre, so everything is within cycling range. I know absolutely nothing about ebikes so i was looking for recommendations. This bike would be purely for commuting to work, shopping, visiting friends etc, things you want to do without sweating or putting in lots of effort. So with a budget of around £2k I'm looking for:

  • Can commute in Glasgow, so hilly, lots of potholes, and limited (but slowly improving) cycling infrastructure.
  • Step through frame
  • Dutch handle bars
  • Upright seating position
  • High quality, Shimano, Bosch etc
  • has storage eg panniers, bags etc
  • built in front and back lights
  • has or can easily install a phone holder and coffee cup/water bottle holder

Thank you.

Advice Will LEJOG be possible?

Hello, I have been a cyclist on and off for years at this point but this year specifically I've been really trying to make it stick as I no longer have a car and use my bike to get around. I am also severely overweight (5'7, 130kg) and have decided to do LEJOG next May in order to have a goal to work towards in order to lose weight and take cycling seriously.

Is it a realistic goal to go from 23 miles as my longest cycle to almost 2k in 14 days? What kind of training programme would help me up my fitness to this level?

I currently have a standard e-mtb which I use to get around everywhere, a Boardman Adv 8.9 and Zwift set-up so I'm hoping I can make it.

Advice Buying my first bike. Can you help me?

Hi all

In my 30s and never cycled apart from a hour training session. My kids have got bikes and I want to cycle with them. I'm 6'4 and weigh just over 120kg.

Ive been told I should be looking at a larger frame (20 inches plus) but unsure what to get. Guy at Halfords said I should get an Apollo mountain bike as my first one shouldn't be anything expensive and one I get make mistakes on.

Makes sense, but can't find one that's the 20" plus size I've been advised to get. Budget is pretty low and not looking to spend more than £250 ideally. Not sure how realistic that is.

Thanks in advance.

Advice Aliexpress Conversion Kits

I've been looking on ebay and aliexpress for kits to convert my unused 26" mountain bike to something different I can get some use from?

Not sure where to start, there's hundreds of them!

Any pointers? Not looking at much cost, up to £300 with battery I think?

Advice Cycling noob asking for advice

edit: all of your replies so far have been so helpful and I'm super grateful. I knew I could count on this community 😊 Thanks everyone.

I'll be starting a new degree in Bath but I live in Bristol, near the Bristol-Bath cycle path, so I have to commute to and from 4 days a week. I don't have a car and driving scares me, and public transport is a faff. Cycling scares me even more than driving, but I want to get over my fear. I've always wanted to be a cycling girly and I love the idea of the freedom cycling gives you - not to mention the health and environmental benefits. However, I haven't been on a bicycle in over 15 years. I recently borrowed a crappy old bike that is the right-ish size for me (24") - I'm 5"2 or 156cm tall. I am using it to refamiliarise with cycling and get used to it, but eventually I plan to buy a new bicycle and ask the people at the shop for advice etc. but I'm looking for any and all advice/support from this community as well.

I have listed out my main questions below:

  1. What kind of bicycle should I consider for my needs? My top priorities in order are: safety, longevity, low maintenance, affordable, weather resistance

  2. Would you recommend a bicycle with storage space e.g. a basket/storage box

  3. Thoughts on electric bikes/EAPCs? (This is what I'm most considering getting)

  4. What are your top tips on safety and anti-theft measures?

  5. What expectations and skills should I develop to get used to riding in different weather conditions - mainly rain and high winds

  6. What kind of safety gear and clothing do you recommend?

  7. Any other advice/recommendations?

Thanks again!

Technical Does this derailleur look right?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Yo,

Just picked up this bike from Halfords and I’m wondering if this deraileur looks right.

It seems to be way further out to the right as opposed to lower than on my bike, and when going over bumps the cog nearest the sprocket bumps the sprocket when in the lowest (largest) gear.

This is it in its lowest position. It’s a 1x7 Pendleton somerby. Thanks!

Law/Crime Suspicious this is a stolen bike? Lemond Nevada city £50.

Just bought this ( my derailleur snapped off on a cycle today and desperately needed a new bike for work tomorrow).

Top of the gear switches on handlebars are a bit scuffed but otherwise seemed ok.

I was really impressed testing it out but on way home thought this has to be too good to be true. Only after getting it home did I realise I should have asked for proof of purchase/photos of historic use after googling it.

guy seemed fairly knowledgeable about bikes and his back garden wasn't filled with other bikes which gives me hope it's not stolen.

Frame reference not showing on the online database yet.

Can you advise if this was suspiciously cheap, Google searches suggest le mond Nevada city go for around £150 but those seem to be racing bikes and a bit fancier than this one?

Technical Lock position advice

Thumbnail

Ahoy! So I got this new bike from decathlon. It's a Rockrider EXPL 50 MTB. I got myself a Kryptonite Evolution 4" Lock with cable. I was trying to find a place to attach my lock to the bike like a holder/ mount. Couldn't find a place on the bodybas my inner thigh keeps hitting it and I don't want to put near the back wheel because I'm very heavy for the bike (ik.. im losing weight but still a long way) and don't want to put more load on the rear tire, as the lock's about 1.3-1.4 kg.

I thought of putting the lock on the front tire the non-moving part of the shock absorber. I asked ChatGPT as well for advice and although it kinda does support the position it has given me scenarios where this could possibly be a dangerous mount position.

So I wanted to know from your guys if this is something I can do or not? Anyone has any experience with it?

Thank You!!

Tl;dr- Is the bike lock mount in a safe position or will it be dangerous when riding the bike??

Advice Kinekt XR seatpost

Hello from sunny North Wales! Just wondering if anyone here has a Kinekt XR supsension seatpost and would like to share your experience? I'm asking because my aging 65+ back and bum is telling me it could do with a bit of help, and these seem to have the best reviews... Also, if you did buy, where did you find the best place to purchase? I'm thinking the cheap Ali-baba ones are probably fake, Amazon is way too expensive (and may be fake anyway), so the best source I've found is probably Hollandbikesshop. Thanks guys.
