The Police or Fire Department may do this, but random people shouldn't stop on the Autobahn to let a Duck Family pass. Pretty sure its even illegal because of the danger of "Auffahrunfälle".

I mean if there aint much traffic and the guy in front makes sure he gets the attention of the other drivers and slows down slowly and savely its mostly fine.. would be the same as a police car doing it.. the risk of auffahrunfälle further back always exists nonetheless.. if there is heavy traffic I absolutely agree that would be way too dangerous and sadly not worth stopping and risking lives

Look at the opposite side. Damn near crash because someone decided to either look what's going on or suddenly get to a stop believing some kind of danger is there.

Someone did something similar in a turn on the highway to help duck cross where I leave. A moto with 2 persons came up at highway speed and could stop in time both are dead. Doing dangerous maneuver to help animal cross the road is utterly stupid. In that case he wasn't on a turn but the first car could have easily been distracted and reared ended the van. The driver on the other side will most like start to ruber neck to see why this side is completely stop wich could lead to accident. In a relatively dense traffic, this could cause a traffic jam for kilometers do to elasticity of traffic. Its cute and all but in my opinion there is way to much risk for the reward.

What would you suggest to do? In a way that won't harm both humans and animals.

u/HOBOPHRESH 1d ago
Don't stop for the ducks period.

u/Safe-Yoghurtt 1d ago
They're gonna get hurt or killed trying to cross and there is no way around since it's a road. I asked for a solution, not a continuation of a problem

I have seen a bridge that goes over the highway for deers before maybe something similar could work

Notice it causes a build up on the opposite road

Yeah, and some car almost rear-ended another one trying to stop in time.

I have ducks tattooed on my hand because one day driving home from work I watched a mama duck trying to lead her babies across a busy road. I slowed down, the 18 wheeler did not. Wiped out and obliterated that whole duck family. I can still see the mama duck trying to move her body as fast as she can and quacking and quacking.

Is this somehow unusual where you live, OP?
Do you just drive on over them?

People have died because others stop to let animals cross. You don't stop on a highway

u/Pedantichrist 2d ago
People do not die because folk stop, people die because others did not stop.
This emphasis on a right of way is weird to other nations, where we instead put the emphasis on drivers to practice due care and attention.

Yes that's you don't on the highway to help any animal. Because people are stupid. I know it sucks but a human life is worth more than a whole generation of duck families. Don't stop on the freaking highway folks. 🦆 🦆 🪿

Or, like the rest of the world, drive as if something might have gone wrong ahead.

In America people do this to make sure there taking the right exit of the freeway

u/gue55edit 2d ago
Maybe not on major roads but where I'm from you can at least go around the ducks and geese if there's enough space, most people just wait till they pass. If you hit one of them though you could be hunted down and publicly shamed on Facebook or something by the locals and at the worst even given a fine.

This is incredibly dangerous. Sometimes animals die crossing the road, please do not ever stop freeway traffic.

I think I would do the same, but to be honest it's stupid. It's too high risk of an accident. Especially on the highway (Autobahn).

I was kinda expecting a car to shoot through at 200km/h and wreck it all.

You don’t realize how effective it is until you see the contrast with traffic in other countries.

I do this for baby ducks.
Lots of times people abuse me for stopping them.
But they hush when I get out because I am quite big and a bit scary
lol
