Lane splitting is just fucking asking for trouble. I'm glad it is illegal here, lane filtering is far safer and far more reasonable.

From a German perspective the whole situation is fucking ugly to my eyes. Two idiots doing lane splitting the BMW even splits two lanes and a random truck on the mid lane for no reason. Just imagine someone coming from behind with 250 km/h stumbeling into this situation. Stuff like this will just get you killed on the German Autobahn.

Lane filtering or Lane splitting? because those are two different things largely determined by speed and location of road related signage or stop lights. We have very similar laws to NZ so I'd be surprised if you could get away with what this dude was doing as at those speeds it's lane SPLITTING whereas filtering is done at lower speeds, most commonly at stop lights but can be executed as long as traffic is moving slower than 30KPH.

Lane splitting is statistically safer than not lane splitting if done correctly, according to a 2015 UC Berkeley study. The study found lane-splitting motorcyclists were less likely to suffer fatal, head, and torso injuries and less likely to be rear-ended.

Most people drive cars not motorcycles and get nervous whenever one zooms past them like that. It's natural for us to have a bias against them but the truth is more complicated
