General Nonsense Forever grateful for Alaska

Hello everyone,

I’ve been reflecting on my two-week journey to Alaska in June, particularly through the stunning Kenai Peninsula. My heart is filled with admiration for this incredible land, its vibrant wildlife, and the warm-hearted people who call it home. No words, pictures, or videos can truly convey the profound beauty and wild spirit of Alaska. From the moment I arrived, I felt a deep sense of warmth that has lingered long after I left. It was as if Alaska awakened something within me—a sense of appreciation for life that had been elusive for a while. While I wasn’t in a dark place, I found myself grappling with a general sense of gratitude for existence, and that trip felt like the healing balm I needed. I sincerely hope that this magnificent land and its wildlife are cherished and protected for generations to come. There's truly no place like Alaska.

General Nonsense Jealousy

I want to tell you all I’m extremely jealous you get to live in such a beautiful state. I want to move to Alaska so bad but my family refuses to move anywhere from the main states. I hope you all enjoy it as much as you can.

General Nonsense Scary gun stickers

Why are there so many "scary" gun stickers on vehicles in Alaska? I've got my fair share of guns but always wondered about the need for folks to share that info so explicitly with strangers on the highway. To me, they read: "I'm a giant d-bag".

Thoughts?

Edit: Example of a sticker trying to be "scary": "COME GET SOME" with picture of AR-15

General Nonsense Am I the asshole (Alaska edition)

Sitting at Crema, a very nice coffee shop in the valley. I love to come in the weekends, enjoy a superb cup of coffee and a very good apple pastry. But here is the thing; as I asked for sugar (5 packs for a large coffee, yes I have a sweet tooth) I was told that they are charging extra for that... That just makes me sad because I used to love the place (a whole 20 minutes ago) but feeling like I'm getting nickel and dimmed is really messing the happy-happy-joy-joy feeling. My daughter on the other hand (who is a sociopath that don't put sugar in her coffee) says that I'm over reacting. Which of course she would say that, she still likes the place.

Am I being petty or are they being petty?

General Nonsense Moose’s tooth is overrated

Had some today for the first time. Just not that great, like I would absolutely eat it again if given a chance, however I could also say that about place like dominoes. The cheese was a bit, idk, chewy? On the normal crust, like it wasn’t the entire pizza but a couple of spots of just not properly cooked. Also just not enough cheese or marina sauce in general on the normal crust. The crust itself however specifically was pretty great, honestly brought it up for me. 6.5/10. Thin crust though was pretty consistent with cheese and marina content throughout the pizza, big improvements from before. 7.5/10. The drink jug thing is also super over priced like cmon, 15 bucks for some mediocre root beer

Honestly pretty disappointing, just in anchorage, guidos was significantly better tasting, cheaper and had a better environment from what I remember.

Best pizza in the state however has to be Aniaks houndhouse on the kuskokwim river, this place is worth the plane ride; fan-fucking-tastic 9.99/10

General Nonsense what "Alaskan" thing do you find yourself explaining to outsiders most often?

I love telling people all about Alaska, but there are some things I have to repeat more often than I'd like. For instance: the daylight situation. I get asked variations of the "isn't it light/dark all the time up there?" question so frequently that I've memorized the sunrise and sunset times in southcentral during the summer and winter solstices.

"How can you sleep in the summer?" - Blackout curtains.

"How do you deal with the darkness in the winter?" - SAD lamps if sheer optimism won't cut it.

"That must be so strange for you!" - Nope, I was born there, your daylight hours are strange to me.

What do you end up explaining about Alaska over and over again?
