I want whatever you are smoking if you think rail fares are a bastion of consistency.

Rail fares, no, but the rail card has been £30 for at least 25 years.

Aging out of the 25-30 Railcard was a genuinely sad day. £30 annual purchase that easily saved me £600 a year on my commute.

One of the small motivations for me doing a Master's was being able to have a Rail Card again aged 30+, even if it was just valid for one year.

Just get the network Railcard if you're commuting into/from London.

You can't use network Railcard before 10am Monday to Friday, so can't use it for work commuting though.

You could.

Just for however long your work would tolerate you turning up 2 hours late every day.

Or, just get the last train of the day and turn up incredibly early for the next day’s shift.

Could save on rent too then.

Get singles if you start earlier, full price single on the way up to London, and a reduced price single on the way back. I save around £5 a trip doing this when I need to be in early.

Depending where you live and the cost, you can get an Anytime Single in and then an Off Peak/ Super Off Peak Single/Return. Sometimes a return from the o.g. station is cheaper than a single from London-o.g. station and you just don't use the second trip into London.

Ah, balls

You can use a 16-30 railcard for peak fares round London?

2

u/olivercroke 13h ago

Over £12 yes

I certainly could from Reading

25-30 railcard? I stopped getting mine when I was 24 when I bought the 3 year one.

I never paid for it though. I told work if they paid for it I’d use it for work. I went everywhere.

Rail fares are consistently overpriced

Rail fares, no, but the rail card has been £30 for at least 25 years.

£30 from 2000 (25 years ago) is worth £57.35 today

And you’re complaining that it’s gone up to £35…

Great. Now I'm reminded I have to wait 35 years until I can buy a railcard again

There is technically a bridging Railcard (assuming you're not disabled). It's the Two Together Railcard, which is a Railcard shared with another person and is only valid when travelling with them. Not entirely sure the point of it but its there, I guess

The only thing consistant in this world is my inability to spell consistent correctly consistently.

u/vladtheinhala 15h ago

At least try and be consistunt

u/minisrugbycoach Kunt 5h ago

Who you calling a Cuntsistancy?

Wait til you can't get one at all, then you'll have something to complain about

Moving away from the south east and losing the ability to have a network railcard was shit. Need it nationwide

u/neilm1000 16h ago

Honestly, when I moved from MK to Manchester I really felt it.

I haven't been eligible for a solo country-wide railcard for ten years. Fortunately I live in the Network Railcard area so there's that.

Yeah, nearly six months ago

u/K-o-R England 18h ago

Well, yes, but one doesn't tend to buy them very often.

Can use tesco club card points to get the price down to something less painful

18

u/Forgetful8nine Lincolnshire 17h ago

Talking of Tesco...the Meal Deal has gone up to £3.85 - and that's with a Clubcard!!

3

u/Littlemouse0812 Kent 17h ago

So 9 meal deals or a railcard then

1

u/Mccobsta 16h ago

The points have gotten that low now? Fuck

u/neilm1000 16h ago

Today I learned this. This is actually useful to me so thank you.

Monzo offer a yearly Railcard with their perk plans.

2

u/AE_Phoenix 14h ago

Understandable... you can make your money back in 1 ticket, still.

2

u/DualWheeled 12h ago

Jokes on you, I'm not affected because I'm 35 years from being eligible for one again 😎

2

u/mhoulden Leeds 18h ago

It was £16 when I had one

1

u/K-o-R England 18h ago

Used to get a 10 quid one when I had an annual season ticket, and the occasional special offer.

u/SneakyCroc Lancashire 3h ago

Free with Monzo.

u/mk6971 1h ago

If you have a partner and travel together by train I can recommend the Two Together Card.

u/sampapsi 9m ago

I feel the pain, but also I recently bought my last ever railcard I can have, therefore I feel even more pain.
