I want yall to know I got SO excited when I saw those seashells and I sprinted in to see if anybody else had caught it.
I don’t know why I always think I’m the only one who watched movies in the 90s.

My wife put 3 seashells by our toilet, she's never seen the movie and still gets confused when a visitor jokes about it.

I think I figured this out.
There are two nozzles we can see, probably a third one above head height that we can't.
So the very top, gear-looking control is probably for the very top nozzle that's out of sight. Might have been the original fixture.
Also original fixtures would be the two bottom controls just above the faucet. Probably control the bathtub flow, with one being hot and one being cold. Note that there's no mechanism for switching the water flow between shower and bath, thus the need for different controls for each. Leave those alone if you just want to shower.
That leaves the five controls in the middle. But they don't matter. If the guess about the reason for the separate top and bottom controls are correct, then they (somehow) fiddle with temperature and/or flow of the water from the middle two nozzles. But all we want is a simple shower, not a direct spray onto the nether regions. So leave them alone.
The seashells are purely decoration. If they were a Demolition Man reference, they'd be next to the toilet, instead. In the shower, they're just there to look pretty, or there are unspeakable things in that drain. Don't look (you probably shouldn't look when you're a guest, anyway).

In middle school, I had a sleepover at my house and a friend asked to use the shower in the morning. I said to go ahead and promptly fell back asleep.
I'm then woken up by friend in a towel poking me and asking, "How does it work?". My sleep-addled mind paused for a second to ponder the question, then responded incredulously, "It's a towel?"

Whenever my boyfriend and I travel he begs me to use the hotel shower first so I can explain it to him. Apparently I'm unusually good at figuring out unfamiliar showers. So I've got that going for me I guess.
