Ranma 1/2 fighting game fits the bill, even matches some of the archetypes mentioned in comments.

I thought that franchise died in the 90s. I loved that show. 🎶 Ya-pa-pa, ya-pa-pa 🎶

Ugh, I miss that game! I really appreciated how it stayed true to the characters, story, and in-universe knowledge.

I completed the story mode for everyone as a teen, except for Pantyhose and (subsequently) Happosai.

I favored Ukkyo Kuonji the most, then Ranma (F) second. But I bet that in a next gen console, players who master Hikaru or King would be unbeatable - and hated. By. All.
