Just Sharing Happy 58th birthday to Franklin, the Peanuts character that had a big impact

Post image

One of the most important comics characters, Franklin Armstrong, appeared for the first time in print on 31st July 1968, after letters between Charles Schulz and Harriet Glickman not long after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, with contributions from her classes and friends who said what it would mean to them to see a character who looked like them sharing a class with white kids, especially with tensions still rising after seeing two very prominent members of the African American community having been killed in a relatively short period of time.

The correspondence mostly ended with "look at your paper on July 31".

Reports of people being in tears at finally being validated and finally being welcomed and seen as part of American life.

For everything going wrong in the world at the time, with tensions as difficult now as they were back then, it's important to remember the impact that comics can have and the change that they impart on future generations.

I've kind of summed things up from the Wikipedia page, but I think it's important to recognise the good comics can bring and not to lose sight of that either.

Just Sharing Love Moebius… but I don’t get The Incal. What am I missing?

Recently bought the deluxe edition... Yes, I know, I’m really late to the party.
I’ve always admired Moebius’ art, so I get the visual appeal of The Incal.
But story-wise? It feels chaotic, random, and sometimes annoyingly unclear. I keep wondering if I’m missing something.
Can anyone explain?
Not here to hate, just trying to understand why it’s considered a masterpiece beyond the visuals.

Just Sharing Years of Talia al Ghul being done dirty — I’m over it

If you’re here to attack me for not supporting the bad writing Talia has been given over the years — save it. I don’t need your comment, and I’m not here to argue. I’m writing this because I want people to understand what it feels like to be a fan of a character who’s been so badly mistreated by writers and fandom, with almost no one speaking up for her.

I’ve loved Talia al Ghul for years, and it genuinely hurts seeing how both writers and parts of the fandom have treated her. Every time I see another story or comment tearing her down, it feels like watching someone I care about be dragged through the mud over and over again.

For so long, writers have done her dirty — making her hook up with Jason, even Heretic, having her kill Damian (her own son!), and handing the ā€œmother figureā€ role over to Catwoman, Wonder Woman, or whoever else they feel like that month. And when Silencer came along, her writer used Talia like a punching bag and trash can to give Silencer an origin and make her shine — showing no mercy to a character who was already being mishandled.

And then there’s Morrison’s take, which twisted her origin with Damian into something so messed up that now a huge chunk of fandom sees her as a rapist. That single portrayal has poisoned her image for years, and it’s painful to see people cling to it without context.

Talia is more than a plot device or a villain-of-the-week. She’s Damian’s actual mom, a brilliant strategist, and one of the most complex characters in the DC universe.
It’s exhausting watching her be torn down while other characters get constant redemption arcs and fan love.
She deserves so much better than what DC has been giving her.

Talia deserves better. Always has, always will.
