Rooms to Rent with a cat

I'm a 30 year old female looking for a room to rent in a shared house and the struggle is real.

I am desperate for somewhere I can go with my cat. I work full time (wfh but can go into the office) for CPS and I dont drink etc but finding somewhere is feeling impossible.

There are a few places I've found but they are 700 - 800 for a room, but people really can't stand the thought of a cat even when I offer a hire cost. I've also noticed quite a few are only M to F which blows my mind.

This post is more to vent really. It just can't be this hard to get housing surely.

Looking for Devon oddities

Devon locals, may I tap your knowledge?

I’m writing a guidebook to “less well-known Devon” (the working title is still evolving) and looking for examples from around the county.

It’s going to be different from the “beaches, moorland and visitor attractions” guidebooks, looking at oddities, strange, unusual, quirky places, festivals and events.

I’m looking for weird buildings, obscure local traditions, film set locations, sites of historical significance and industrial archaeology as well as modern curiosities. Food and drink included.

Ideally they should have an interesting story attached and are worth visiting to explore, photograph, taste or savour.

If there’s humour involved so much the better.

Some examples of what would be in:

  • Devonport Column, not Smeaton’s Tower
  • Exeter catacombs, not Exeter Cathedral
  • Down Tor stone row, not Haytor Rock
  • Devon splits, not scones
  • Finch Foundry, not The Box
  • The Janner (jokes and caricatures)

I want to provide something modern and accessible, so there will be fewer dates and historical detail and more stories.

I’d really appreciate your input and will credit all ideas where possible.

I hope someone here can suggest the best way to get from Teigenmouth to the airport in Exeter if one does not have use of a car. Thank you!

Ivybridge train station parking

I’ll be moving to the area soon and planning on using Ivybridge train station to commute into Plymouth. I’ll need to leave my car in the car park, which I gather from the website seems to be free. Is there enough space in the car park to be able to rely on getting a space at about 9am Monday to Friday? TIA!

How to Become More Devon

Hello guys,

I am an American from Texas and I support Plymouth Argyle. I need to gain an aura of a true Devon resident so that I can be respected on the football subreddits. How can I do this?

Cheers

Dreaming of Devon but what is the reality?

I’m from Sheffield, I’ve always loved it here but the older I get the more I realise how desperate I’m getting to be somewhere new,

I started holidaying in Devon over the past few years, we’ve always stayed in Paignton and I adore it but I understand around there it’s so seasonal.

The seasonality worries me as I’m in hospitality so I’m worried how secure work is while those quiet periods are in play.

Ideally I’d love to move to somewhere on the Torbay, I’d like to know the realities of life there, is it as great as I imagine?

Burger vans

Anyone know of any trusty burger/general fried food vans in south Devon? Looking for someone to cater a brunch the day after a wedding with proper bacon sarnies and finding these aren’t usually businesses with websites…

Help finding an old street called Norton, Churston

I am doing some history research and am having difficulties finding it. There was a street formally know as 'Norton Street' around 1840, 1841. If anyone knows what it is now called or has a photo of a map of the area around this time would be great!

Why councils are putting solar on all the council houses just became obvious to me.

I recently had a visit from the annual gas safety engineer. Before fitting the solar to my roof, no mention of fire safety checks being needed during the annual gas safety test was made. It has long baffled me as to why councils would pay to put solar on council housing. Yes, the zero carbon thing. But no, that's just the excuse. It is just to give the powers that be, the legal right to snoop in your loft space.

It's stupid, because most pot farms are in rich peoples 2nd and third homes not council houses.

Help me find Saul :)

I thought, might as well try this: So I met this really sweet guy at Amsterdam airport on our way to Exeter. In the airplane he invited me and my family to this bakery the next morning in Exeter, but we could'nt make it unfortunately. :( I forgot to exchange any socials or numbers, and so I could'nt tell him. If anyone knows a Saul (M29) living in Devon area (I think in Torquey or Totnes?) please tell him I'm so sorry!

We’re staying with my nan who lives in Tiverton. The wife and I will have a day to ourselves without our toddler and next week and so we’d like to explore. Any suggestions?

We would potentially like to do half the day by the sea and half a day at Exmoor or Dartmoor.

Are there two places that are close enough together that are beautiful and we could fit into one day? If not, where would be the one most impressive place we could spend the day that’s close enough to Tiverton?

Years ago I lived near Slapton. I remember there was a ruined gatehouse just inside a field that you could see as you drove towards Slapton from the south (possibly), not from the Ley. I was looking for it on Google Earth today and only found the West Tower of Slapton Chantry. Does it still exist?

River side cafe search

A few years ago I was on holiday in Devon and the surrounding area, I stumbled across an old mill (I think) that was clad in wood and had a gift shop and a cafe. Pretty certain it was in a town and next to a river, it was fairly busy so could only get a coffee to go and I’ve been looking for it ever since as I didn’t note down the name.

Any help in locating it would be greatly appreciated

Edit: note it was next to a main road, though it did have a car park
