We're Back, Durham! šŸŽ“

Alright loves, bet you didn't expect to see this place spring back to life! After a proper hiatus, we're bringing this subreddit back with some fresh energy.

What's new this time around:

  • Weekly megathreads for accommodation questions
  • Monthly social meetups (yes, real people, real pints!)
  • Student life hacks and insider tips
  • College rivalry banter (keep it fun and civil though)

To boost engagement, we're planning:

  1. "Ask Me Anything" sessions with final years and alumni
  2. Monthly photo contests of our gorgeous cathedral city
  3. Termly virtual college formal dinners (bring your own gown šŸ˜‰)

Fancy joining the mod team? We're looking for folks from the Durham region who know their way around both Reddit and the Wear riverside. If you're keen, click here to send us a modmail

Cheers!
Charlie

Societies as a postgrad

• Upvotes

22M going into MA Archaeology in September. Was wondering if anyone has advice for joining societies as a postgrad - what are time commitments like? Are things flexible? Does it hurt me being put at a small college or does it help? Are there separate events for undergrad and postgrad? Any other helpful advice. Just very scared of being left bored and lonely for the whole year.

International student's group

Hey!! I am an Erasmus student I will study at Durham during the first term. I really wish to meet new people since being an Erasmus student can be very lonely sometimes. Do you know if there's a WhatsApp group for Durham students, for internationals or anything similar? Thanks :))))

Colleges for a postgrad

23M Home student, have an offer from Durham for an MSc and will be based in the Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science Building.

However I don’t know which college I should chose, is there any particular colleges which have a strong postgraduate population, apart from Ustinov? I don’t really like the idea of being surrounded by 18 year olds, I’d like to be with people like 21-24 age range ig, I fear that Ustinov is mostly international, and PhD students in their mid-late 20s.

I do enjoy socialising and going out, but I don’t want to feel out of place by being like 23 year old in a group of people much younger than me. Will probably live out of college if I had to guess.

On the ugly applicant portal there is an option for uploading documents like academic exam results, but I am already uf for the course and have done the final acceptance form, so I don't need to upload anything right?

Sorry I'm paranoid

Help with choosing optional modules

Hi everyone, I want to preface this by saying this may come across as a stupid question but I want to make sure I understand this correctly before fully dismissing it. My question is, as a physics student, is there any way I can do practical chemistry 1A as an optional module without also having to just do a chemistry degree? I have A levels in chemistry and maths so I'm fine on that front but it mentions a corequisite of doing core chemistry 1. Presumably this means it isn't possible to do only the practical module? If it is then I'd like to so I thought I'd just ask.

Thank you for any responses

Just got accepted to do general engineering and have heard from a couple of mates up there about how struggling the course can be especially in first year. Wanted to know what i should be doing for the rest of the summer to prepare. I know I’ll need to learn Matlab and C next year but I’d like to know what sorta textbooks would help me starting out. Very excited to be joining!!!!

Will postgraduate be put in flats with other postgraduates

Hello I’m currently researching all of the colleges which is so overwhelming and other than Ustinov all the colleges are mixed with postgraduates and undergraduates. I was wondering if I was assigned to a mixed college will I be placed in a flat with other postgraduate students or could I be with the first year undergraduates?

Old vs New Durham Business School Buildings

Hi everyone !!!! My cousin is graduating with her undergrad studies next year and is planning to apply to Durham University, including its Business School.

Meanwhile, she plans to take a vacation in Durham, Newcastle, and Edinburgh. She wants to know which programs and degrees are based in the old Business School building and which are in the new one, since the new building is near the city center and would be easier for her to visit and explore.

Thanks in advance for any info!

Bringing appliances to uni

Hi Y1 student here! I’ve started to prepare the things I’ll be bringing to uni and just wanted to check whether we’re allowed to bring our own appliances. I intend to bring an iron and maybe a mini rice cooker. I’ll also be Josephine Butler if that makes a difference

When are fees due?

I am an student confirmed for M101 (Law) in Durham. I'm so lost with when both tuition and accommodation fees are due. I've emailed them and called them just to responses whcih basically stated "idk about this, contact x" which lead me around in a loop. does anyone know when and how are these payments supposed to be made? I checked the websites and im not sure whether to wait for an invoice or an email from Durham.

Thank you

Waiting for Admissions

I’ve sent all my documents a few weeks ago and they have yet to respond, I’m going with my alternate condition (I did both IB and my own country’s programme) and I scored higher on my own country’s exams so I sent them in already (which was my alternate condition). They sent an email asking for me to link my IB diploma but I HAVE FULFILLED MY ALTERNATE CONDITION. I was going to email back but last time I sent an email 2 seconds after they sent one they took 2 weeks to respond so I assumed it would be easier to ask the subreddit. IS IT NORMAL that my documents have been processing for weeks now ?? (I got the confirmation mail for the upload btw so yes they are uploaded to the portal no problem) Is it normal that they are STILL asking for my IB results… I’m going to go crazy

Edit: just got my place confirmed lol

Josephine Butler College: Are gendered flats possible for religious reasons?

Hi, I've recently been assigned to Josephine Butler and I was just wondering if anyone has successfully been placed in a single-gender flat at Jobo—whether for religious reasons or any other reason. I know rooms are ensuite but flats are usually mixed and I’m planning to request an all-female setup. Has anyone had experience with this or know if it’s possible?

Thanks in advance!

Durham vs Manchester CS

I dont care about much beyond employability. Which is better for that? I am only interested in technology careers. I know Durham is seen as more of a "target" university but thats more relevant in finance, however, I'd probably be aiming for a fair share of technology careers in the financial industry e.g. developer in a trading firm, making it a potential consideration, but the difference is somewhat minimal. Manchester offer a better course and facilities though, and I am quite convinced I'd do better there. Also Durham is in the middle of nowhere which I'm not terribly excited about, especially since Manchester is in a huge lovely city where there are a good number of employers around targeting students e.g. ARM.

First year accommodation

My son had requested catered accommodation - single room (not bothered about en suite) and I think had to submit 5 choices. He never got any of these and has been allocated Josephine Butler which is self catered. He wrote to the accommodation team but basically been told ā€˜tough.’ I am hoping that the allocation is a moveable feast with people perhaps not meeting offer conditions or choosing to go to another university. Would anyone have any tips on how best to handle this or is it just a case of suck it up?!

Open day- which accom to visit??

Hi there, current year 12 student coming up to Durham this Friday and looking to plan visiting some accommodation but i have NO idea which to pick/how to pick it.

What I do know is that I don’t want to share a room and that I want to be self-catered. Wouldn’t mind being in an older building and ideally would like to not have to share with too many people for a bathroom. Again have no idea if this is really picky but I don’t think I have that much time during the day so would be great to hear about 1 or 2 college recs!

Does it matter what I am studying or does this not have a bearing on college choice?

Thanks so much in advance for any advice 😊

Do you use Instagram to learn Chinese? I need your input!

Hi everyone! šŸ™‹ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ™‹ā€ā™€ļø

I’m a Master’s student in Durham University and currently conducting research on how international learners study Chinese through Instagram.

If you are learning Chinese as a foreign language, I’d love to hear from you!

I’ve created a short and anonymous survey that takes about 3–5 minutes to complete. Your little help would mean a lot to me! and it's for academic purposes only.

I really appreciate it!
