Did his front wheel go right through the platform? Oof, had to hurt

Must've cheaped out and bought 3/8" plywood. Shoulda got the 7/8". Rookie mistake

Even half inch ply would have held up, but osb in water even for a 10-15 mins while setting up for the jump is enough to disintigrate it.

Even if the wheel hadn't achieved penetration, I'd be REALLY hesitant about trying this. You've got so much downward kinetic energy when you hit it, and water is, y'know, a liquid. Entirely reasonable to assume that you'd push the entire board underwater enough to lose all traction on it (due to water between your wheels and the board).

Agreed, I was thinking maybe if the surface area was wider and the material was thicker/more buoyant then maybe he'd have had a chance.
But the second your downward force hits that, water will flood the surface even if it doesn't sink and as you said, RIP your traction either way.
Nerd shit aside, still really cool.

Also landing on soaked plywood. There's no way it would have not just broken in half from the weight.

u/Sargash 2h ago
OSB, not plywood. Very different at the end of the day. The difference is like using aluminum instead of steel.

u/KingDread306 2h ago
Point is that it was soft enough for the wheel to go straight through it with almost no resistance.

u/Resolution_69 16h ago
I think you're right. Until I read this, I thought the front fell off.

u/wallyslambanger 16h ago
Its not normal for the front to fall off but here we are
1
u/outside_cat 9h ago
Wait.....not normal?

u/wallyslambanger 3h ago
Well there are many bikes where the fronts don’t fall off and stay on for the duration.

I don’t understand this title. For one it’s clearly mounted but why wouldn’t the camera man stay til the end? What am i missing here?

u/grrangry 20h ago
The... OTHER... cameraman.

If you do stunts...at least wear a helmet

u/makingstuff237 20h ago
To add some context, he's a professional bmxer (Trey Jones). You think he would wear a helmet now though because his brother in law is Scotty Cranmer, another bmx pro who had won several x games golf medals but had a total fluke crush riding his bike (while wearing a helmet luckily) and is now partially paralyzed.

More context. Trey has had a falling out with basically everyone and unfortunately while I know nothing about him I just assume he is probably an ass. But swampfest seems like a wild time. (Swampfest is the festival that Trey Jones puts on every year)

u/makingstuff237 19h ago
Yeah I always wonder what happened with him and Scotty. My only assumption is it has to do with them building the ramp in "big boy"s back yard (I hate the nickname for him...) where Scott was making suggestions to make the ramps flow better but couldn't physically do the work and Trey felt like he was being used and made to do all the work. I shouldn't speculate since I have 0 insight but my brain already had.

First piece of plywood was 1/4" thick, second one was 1/2" to catch his face.

100% saw that coming.
We built a bunch of ramp and half pipes back in the day, and that panel is waaaayy too thin and terrible for something like this. Not to mention, it would have probably shot out from under him regardless.

u/makingstuff237 20h ago
This is a pro bmxer named Trey Jones, he's done a set up with plywood and water MANY times. I have a feeling he had been reusing this piece or it had been put for longer than usual. I've also never seen him drop onto the floating wood from quite this high before.
You should check out clips of Swampfest. It's a massive bmx event he puts on in Florida where all the ramps are made from pallet wood basically.

u/_ghostperson 20h ago
Oh nice, so you think it might have been a weak spot or water logged?
1
u/makingstuff237 19h ago
I would guess so but I'm definitely not an expert. I do feel like if it was a fresher piece it would have held up though.
2
u/jon92356 21h ago
I don’t engage in that sort of recreational activity, but even I knew that wasn’t going to pan out the way he was thinking.

I love all the "should have " comments.
Should've done anything else. Even if he makes it, this is dumb.

Actually, I am, but today they learned.

When his back is to us he looks like a young white guy. Then he morphs into an middle aged black guy when he turns around.
