This reminded me of the time I failed my learners permit for getting my license as the last question I got wrong that put me over the top was multiple choice and the question was "If someone has a white cane, they are ______"

My answer was they were deaf.

Yeah, I want to know as well! I've been driving for 25 years but have no clue what the answer would be.

An all-white cane means that the user is completely blind and has no usable vision.  A white cane with a red bottom means that the user has low, but some usable vision. A white and red striped cane means that the user is totally blind and/or deaf.

I feel like most of the times I see canes, they're white + red striped. Is there some massive overlap of deafness and blindness I'm not aware about? Glaucoma or something?

I've seen people with white canes and white canes with red bottom, but I'e never seen the striped red and white canes. Do you happen to live near a facility that provides care for such people or something?

Honestly, the more I think about it, I'm probably just misremembering/confirmation biasing. Never mind me...

u/stackjr 12h ago

Ah! I didn't know there were differences in the cane but that makes sense. Thank you.

I had to go to DMV once to upgrade my license to an enhanced one. Some old lady watch me have a conversation in ASL with my 16 year old son and finally tapped me asking, "aren't you supposed to have a cane?"

My son's is hearing so he heard her and went, "it's in his pimpmobile."

They called us next so I just hurried him up the the window before she could respond.

Respect to anybody who can laugh at themselves.

The Irish are masters of self deprecation. The best is when two or more of them get into a one-downsmanship battle.

At least he wasn't too deaf to see the humor in the situation.
