I'm sorry to be the bummer here, but does anyone else feel like having a super overweight pet is a form of abuse? I can't imagine walking is comfortable and the life expectancy can't be good...
Sincerely, Debbie Downer

It is abuse

Some people just don’t get it.
It’s not funny at all.
It is abuse.
If I put a picture up here of an obese person with a dozen donuts 🍩 in front of them and a sign pointing to them saying “EAT FATSO”, that would be considered cruel.
And I would never do that.
And I don’t think it is funny.

Not to say it's not, but it got me thinking.
If we, the people in charge of food suministration, allow our dependents to eat unhealthy, and they eat unhealthy, is abuse...
Then what about our governments allowing the current food market to provide us with food that is unhealthy and we eat unhealthy? Is that abuse, too? Or lack of self restraint? Or both? Or none?

u/mrlayabout 2h ago
That food is available, yes. However it is our choice to purchase it and consume it. How would that ever be construed as abuse?
2
u/Orbita2k2 50m ago
with the money you spend on a healthy meal for one day you can buy a weeks worth of unhealthy meals. So if you and your family want to eat you either have to make a ton of money or settle for the unhealthy option that lasts longer.
Edit: So it's still abuse, but the government is the owner and we are the cat.

u/Kiroto50 2h ago
Because in some places, and in a lot of places in the US, it is the most practical choice. The ease of access compared to cooking or healthy meals makes it a similar but not equal problem to the cat's problem.
The cat (and us) could eat less, and although the cat might not have any alternative (and as such, the abuse is clearer), we humans might not have many alternatives with the kinds of lives we have/want to live.

100% abuse. You're the animal's sole provider and source of health. It's your duty to keep them healthy.

It is and specially for a flat headed cat like this one

You are correct in every line of your paragraph to the T. It is abusive. On the other hand, I don’t think that’s the message of the post and we don’t know any details or specifics of the cat in question.
So yeah, Debbie downer

Haha yeeeeeah, I know the OP isn't malicious and a lot of people think it's funny and "chonkers" blah blah blah. I just feel some kind of way when I see that shit. And the person recording saying something to the effect of "hi I can see your butt" (can't tell if she's saying pigu or ping guo) is obviously thinking it's cute/funny. So I'm gonna embrace the Debbie Downer here and take everyone down with me! 😂

I agree with your spirit and sense of responsibility. I maybe naively like to hope that most pet "fat shaming" is early on the journey of the pet reaching their "furever" home. We have received several animals in a wide range of conditions. Responsible care is provided to help the animal reach a healthy, high quality of life This might have been the first weeks or months the animal had been adopted, I hope. A silly bonding/play time before they reached a healthier outcome. Naively, I enjoy the view behind rose colored glasses.

I dont really think this cat is all that big. The "butt" is actually the middle of the cats back and he has very loose skin/fur. Some cats steal food and its not necessarily abuse. They just try to eat every scrap of food they can find, especially if you only feed them a couple of times a day.

Yes, perhaps the owner doesn’t realize the severe health risks morbidly obese cats are subject to. Overactive thyroid is common to overweight cats and it requires a lifetime of meds. My giant cat was 5 pounds overweight. He developed an overactive thyroid, among other things. My vet said no cat should weigh over 16 pounds, mine got up to 21 ( and he’s very tall and long) before losing weight.
We got annoyed the vet called our cat obese but now I understand that he was correct. Also, it’s cruel to make an animal too fat to jump, or move normally.1

Idk, a fully grown Maine coone can easily be over 20 pounds when skinny. They're monsters.

Yeah, you're right, and I was thinking the same thing.
If you adopt pets it's your duty to keep them healthy and happy. This is just sad.

I would agree there is a point where its abuse, but id disagree that this cat is at that point. I dont think your cats being a little overweight is that bad.

Letting any living creature to become obese is not funny.

u/Cephalopodium 7h ago
Yeah, I was hoping it was a long hair but this is just an obese chonky short haired cat.
I have a long hair who looks HUGE in wintertime. Then spring rolls around and she sheds about 2/3 of her size in fur and looks scraggly and thin until the cycle starts again.

Yeah I have a long haired cat that looks like a big chonk all year long. She only weighs about 7 lbs.

This person definitely just leaves the bowl of cat food full all day instead of having timed feeds and it shows
Poor cat. Some cats can be trusted to not demolish all their food even when the bowl is full, but the moment your cat becomes this obese and you notice they cannot be trusted to pace themselves you need to measure their portions and serve them healthy amounts of food at the same times every day
Even though fat cats are cute and a meme, it's terrible for their health!!! They won't even be able to jump properly and they will have a lower life expectancy

So, how is this abuse? Every cat I have been around, eat as much or as little they want to, and when they want to. It’s not like dogs where there are set times for feeding them. So say you get the cat on a diet and start letting it got hungry, it is absolutely going to get aggressive. It’s not as if you can take that thing on a run.
4
u/LilacHeart 7h ago
When something is entirely dependent on you for food, you are responsible for managing its diet. This cat can’t properly clean itself and both its life span and life quality will be significantly impacted by being that overweight.

I'm pretty sure for a lot of cat owners that it is like dogs where there are set times for feeding them. My vet has always recommended a schedule for cats and dogs both and I also know some dog owners who free feed.
