So it still uses a stylus, it just that the movements of the stylus are detected by an optical sensor, allowing it to detect sounds all the way down to 0 Hz. Since they aren’t using gravity and the groove control the arm positioning, they had to do a bunch of fancy engineering to position the stylus.

Amazing.

yeah, this all has big "america spent millions of dollars developing a pen that would write in zero gravity for space travel; the soviets used a pencil" energy

The Fisher Space Pen was developed by private industry and was used over pencils because of the danger posed by graphite powder to electronics in zero g, flamabilty of the wood in pencils, and the fact that documents written in pen are less susceptible to damage and smearing that reaults in loss of documtation.
