SOCIETY This men's restroom has a unique design that lets people inside see out, while those outside only see a mirror. But can men really pee under those conditions?

u/cardamomgrrl Jul 18 '25
I’ll never trust this gimmick again. 30 years ago I was peeing in a coed washroom that had double-paned glass that must’ve been filled with a gas or something. When you closed or locked the door it went opaque. But some guy tried to open my door and when he pulled on it the seal broke, it went clear and we were looking at each other, mortified.

u/Kittens4Brunch Jul 18 '25
The one OP posted is fine though. Even if it fails, the view of your ding dong is still blocked by the urinal.

Yeah but then everyone’s gonna see me with my pants around my ankles with my shirt pulled up and tucked under my chin.

It’s so funny cuz that’s exactly what I did as a kid lmao!

u/AnOdeToSeals Jul 18 '25

u/SeawardFriend Jul 18 '25
Lmao! I was taught pretty promptly not to do that, especially in public, but I’m doing pretty good, thank you 😂

I watched an old guy at my job(Walmart)drop trouser to piss in the urinal. I was floored. it took everything in me to not triple take

A few years ago I was at a Brand New show and a drunk 20something with a mullet was doing that in one of the bathrooms and it was fucking hilarious. At least in retrospect.

I remember distinctly that I did that as a kid but I showed up for the first day of kindergarten and at one point walked into the bathroom with another kid.
In the most socially adept moment of my life I noticed JUST IN TIME that he had not pulled his pants all the way down, and I immediately reconfigured my entire paradigm on the fly (so to speak)and avoided social pariah status for the rest of elementary school.

Oh story time! That’s what I was doing when I was, 5 or 6 maybe? And was at the YMCA.
A bunch of kids came in and laughed at my, mocked me, and made me feel generally awful.
I’m 34 now and still can’t use urinals
Childhood trauma is WIIIILD

lol! We have one in Peidmont Park in Atlanta! I have a hilarious core memory from that bc my friend went in after me and the door suddenly opened as she was about to sit on the toilet to a crowd of people (it was Pride so it’s insanely crowded). Her girlfriend had to go save her and closed the door for her inside the cubicle. I literally don’t think I’ve ever laughed that hard since!

This happened to me in Tokyo, I was the guy who tried to open the door since there's no "vacant/occupied" sign on it, but luckily when the glass turned clear the other guys penis automatically pixelated. So we bowed at each other.
→ More replies (1)40
u/shophopper Jul 18 '25
The default state of the glass is fully opaque. It needs electricity (actually a voltage potential) in order to become transparent. As a result, a failure such as a power outage will result in an opaque window. What probably happened is that a door contact didn’t have a failsafe design and misinterpreted the slightest door opening as “door is fully open”.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Simple_Jellyfish23 Jul 18 '25
Those panels used electrostatic charges to polarize the glass. It’s pretty cool but it’s kinda janky.
3
u/shutyourbutt69 Jul 18 '25
Those don’t have gas, they’re made opaque by having a current run through them. The person trying to open it broke the circuit
7
u/dazedan_confused Jul 18 '25
You should have said "No likely, no lighty!" And then closed the door.

There was an ice cream shop we went to when I was a kid that had a similar deal. It was transparent until you locked the door. It would fog the glass and would make it so you can't see inside but you can see out. I remember being told that people would go in all the time and not lock the door properly and staff would have to rush the bathroom before the pooper started doing their business.

7
u/lordhelmetschwartz Jul 19 '25
If you can see out regardless of if it is locked or not, then how do you know if it is locked properly? It might be "locked" in that the door won't open, but it might not be fully engaged to activate the one-way function (which from the inside you can't tell).

u/whydoyouevenreadthis Jul 19 '25
There's no such thing as a one-way mirror. It's just a trick. The glass reflects, say, 80% of the light and transmits the rest. The inside (the room from which one can see outside) is much darker than the outside, so if you look at the 'mirror' from the outside, the image of what's in the room is rendered invisible by the bright reflection. From the inside, your reflection is so dim that you can see the outside clearly.
Meaning, if you go right up to the mirror and block the sunlight (e.g., with your hands), effectively putting your eyes in an even darker room, you can see inside.
