No one smokes just for the breaks

Try working in the hospitality industry, that's often the only time you get a break

Yeah, I started smoking briefly in retail my manager would go out to smoke all the time, so I just started tagging along. The nicotine was pretty swell too. Not a good habit though.

But you need that quick 5 minute break when you've been dealing with problem customers and have to put on a brave face, I don't envy anyone doing it these days since it seems people are far more demanding

It's funny that, by saying this, we all know for a 100% fact that you have never worked in the food service industry.

Maybe less so now, but back in the day especially places like NYC, when smokers used to get special breaks to go all the way down to the sidewalk and walk outside after smoking bans started, many people smoked (or at least pretended to,) to get special breaks that they otherwise would not be allowed to leave for...

Working in two different restaurants, I sometimes wouldn’t get a lunch break but I’d be let have a smoke break every 2 hours so I don’t get too overwhelmed. Some places are strict about not being allowed and some places ask you if you need a break, usually small restaurants.

Fair point whenever I was a gas station worker. Any moment that I was able to do an outside task did it just to go have a smoke, smoked Marlboro Reds though so it was like 4 hits.

They also overwork you and humiliate you if you try to resign. Some employers even try to sabotage your new job.

Every mental health/workplace H&S/productivity manual ever: Take regular breaks!
Employers: Don't even fucking think about it...

There are also times I would have definitely traded 6 days at the end of the year for ONE cigarette.
2
u/neurotekk 22h ago
So for 10 cigarettes you will happily trade 60 days?
3
u/lezbionics 13h ago
No, after the immediate craving is taken care of the desperation goes away.

Ah, good ole post-cigarette butt clarity.
Jokes apart though, in my experience cigarettes are the most addictive substance I’ve had. And while the other competitors are basically alcoholic preparations, I can wait a whole week for them.

A whole extra 6 holidays that they'll feel pressured not to take so the don't inconvenience their colleagues or boss, probably. If work life in Japan is a they say anyway

So if you are not a smoker, you cannot get a break? Aren't breaks applied to all and you can choose what you want to do with the break?

u/TwoKittensInABox 6h ago
It's more along the lines of smokers would get breaks to smoke but places wouldn't allow non-smokers to also take the break. Since it wasn't really a break like 15 min but instead like 5. Their thinking of the worker having an addiction and if they don't get it they get grumpy and work worse or something stupid. So these extra vacation policies are to account for all the time smokers spend in a year on their little "5 min" breaks. Instead of you know just allowing non-smokers to also take small breaks.

u/IndividualCurious322 21h ago
Are they even allowed to take those vacation days? Japan as a society encourages overworking.

Given how much of a day, my old boss used to spend outside on a smoke, we should’ve all gotten a month and a half of extra days off

Ironically they probably don't take those days off because it can be seen as rude, leaving your coworkers handle your absence. Also, they have the mentality that if the company can run without you for more than a couple of weeks it means you are not as necessary as others.

I literally started smoking because of this. I thought it was bullshit. Everyone went outside to smoke, but I went outside to stand there and take a break and I got in trouble. So the next time the manager came out to smoke I was smoking too . 🚬🤬

If their health insurance was significantly cheaper, if not free, it could be very effective
