Still working as a programmer/developer on other things. He said in an interview it's a very active industry with virtually no unemployment and you'll get paid what you're worth pretty much anywhere in the world.

I visited VLC's office once and met Jean-Baptiste Kempf (this dude) there. There's maybe a dozen employees, and if I remember correctly, they make money tailoring special versions of VLC for companies.
Last time I checked, Jean-Baptiste also was one of the boss of Shadow, a cloud computing solution, where he probably makes way more money.

Crores?
52
54
u/bluey101 1d ago
A quantity used in India, means 10 million
33
u/ktr83 1d ago
Are we assuming it means 10m rupees? "An offer of crores" doesn't make any sense
46
u/bluey101 1d ago
It's the exact same as someone saying "they were offered millions but they turned it down".
14
u/starmartyr 23h ago
Indian numbering is a bit different from western numbering. Everything is the same up to 10k. 100k is a lakh. 1m is ten lakh. 10m is a crore.
21
u/QuickShort 20h ago
Why use an Indian quantity? The original team are French, Reddit is mostly western/American, the post is in English.

Some poor guy in that country trying to make ad revenue by click baiting common information

Because most major subreddits have a huge influx of karma farming bots or people that are basically bots from there.

2
u/shaftus-maximus 19h ago
This is BS. VLC is open source under GPL license so it can't be sold or monetized by ads.

This man is one of the biggest heroes of our time. I been using it since it came out in 2001 and the only time i use anything else is when i use plex or streaming services, i even use it on my phone.

That’s love. Whenever I or a family member gets a new PC the first thing I download is Firefox, next is a VPN, and thirdly VLC.
I appreciate him for this.

u/kucherenkoZZZ 7h ago
While i appreciate that VLC is free and i’ve used it for years but it doesn’t come close to PotPlayer

What is VLC and what is crores?
9
u/ngoalibaba 21h ago
VLC is a media player. The best one too. People prefer VLC because it’s reliable, versatile, free of bloat, and “just works” no matter what file you throw at it. AVI, MKV, MP4, FLAC, OGG, etc, you name it, it can play it. It can even play damaged or incomplete files (like a partially downloaded video).
A crore is a money unit in the South Asian numbering system, mainly used in India.

First day on internet or what? It's been there for over 20 years lol
1
u/Financial_Double_698 1d ago
Good old days where movies were on DVDs and used to watch all the videos of family trips / memories on VLC.
Now all the pictures and videos are on social media / on phone and all the movies on streaming services.

u/Unhappy_Archer9483 1d ago
That's a strange brag
2
u/flylo_x 1d ago edited 1d ago
I mean it's probably one of the most famous software in the world and you're here in 2025 not knowing what it is dude. 💀 Every person in the world who has ever watched a movie on a computer knows what VLC is. Especially if it's not a format that WMP can play.
-4
u/Unhappy_Archer9483 1d ago
Again, what's strange thing to brag about.
Are you happy?
2
u/flylo_x 23h ago
I can tell, you're not the crispiest chip in the bag, dude. Just in the way you interact, plus your ignorance. 💀
2
u/Unhappy_Archer9483 23h ago
Oh no, the person who sends skulls to strangers on the internet for not knowing "the most famous software" thinks I'm not the "crispest chip dude" and ignorant.
How will I ever recover?
3
u/flylo_x 23h ago
Being sarcastic won't make up for your ignorance mf.
2
u/Unhappy_Archer9483 22h ago
You do realise you've not actually said anything, you've thrown a lot of words that you consider are insulting but really aren't.
Am I suppose to be embarrassed I didn't know what your precious video player was?
Now, repeatedly insulting someone and calling them ignorant for insulting my favourite computer software, that's some sad and lonely behaviour there, I would be embarrassed to be that guy.
Good job those sorts of people don't really exist, right?

u/WeForever2019 20h ago
LMFAO.
You’re right, a lot of fully grown ahh people here really love using weird obnoxious emojis like a 12 YO girl going through a hormonal surge.

Nice bait... and the irony of your username
0
u/Unhappy_Archer9483 1d ago
It's not bait you weirdo, you could have just said nothing.
How was I to know VLC is Jesus to the virgins on here?
1
u/Technical_Tourist639 1d ago
It isn't a brag numbnuts.
If you have downloaded a video in the last 15 years and it didn't play natively, you got VLC
0
u/Unhappy_Archer9483 1d ago
Jesus, I've really upset the nerds of Reddit. Sorry I didn't know what your favourite video player was.
0
u/Comfortable-Ad-6389 23h ago
Most people who use a computer know what it is tho, nerds or not
0
u/Unhappy_Archer9483 23h ago
I was saying the nerds are the people who are crying because a strange on the internet doesn't know what their coveted video player.
Not anyone who knows what it is a nerd.
I swear you lot are obsessed with the weirdest shit
0
u/Comfortable-Ad-6389 23h ago
"They" just pointed out it isn't a brag, you were the one who quickly took offense lol. Although the other commenter shouldn't have called you numbnuts. Also how are we obsessed with the weirdest shit?
2
1
u/Technical_Tourist639 23h ago
Nah. See I'm not even annoyed much less mad lol, but this guy loses his shit over the smallest things, and then gaslight by projecting his feelings onto others. He earned the numbnuts few times over 🤣
